Talar and Steve, a financial planning company based in
Lakeview, has opened a branch office in downtown Salem in
the building owned by the Salem Office Properties real
estate company. Talar and Steve is taking over office space
formerly occupied by the law offices of Lay Lawson. The
space had been vacant for a year and a half. The new Talar
and Steve office was open for business as of yesterday.
Talar Ormond, president of Talar and Steve, says that her
company chose the Salem location because of a rising
demand for financial planning services in the area. "Salem
is a growing community," she explained, " and the town's
citizens are becoming more affluent. It is just the type of
community where services such as ours are needed." Talar
and Steve closed its branch offices in Johnstown and
Freeburg at the end of last year. These coomunities are
close enough to Lakeview to be served by the main office

To the Editor :
I read with great concern the report in your newspaper this
morning about the plans of the Holbrook Manufacturing
Company to build a factory in this city. The project has
received strong support from the city council, based on
their belief that Holbrook will bring a significant number of
jobs to our area and boost the local economy.
4
Apparently, they are blind to the reality. Holbrook is well
known for its innovative manufacturing methods, which are
largely automated. Because of this, very little manual labor
is required. Holbrook's system generally requires highly
skilled technicians, who would likely come here from other
places to work at the factory. There will be few, if any, jobs
for local citizens. what do we get in return for this ? A large,
unsightly building that will require the destruction of
natural areas and throw pollution into our air and water.
The city council must approve Holbrook's project before
they begin construction of the factory. Holbrook's board of
directors, eager to break ground on the project as early as
next month, have urged the city council to move forward
with their vote, and it will take place tomorrow night rather
than two weeks from now, as originally planned. This gives
even less time for council members to develop an informed
opinion. I strongly urge them not to bow to the pressure of
Holbrook and to vote against the proposed project.
Sincerely,
Hadon Karen

The population of the world has increased more in modern
times than in all other ages of history combined. World
population totaled about 500 million in 1650. It doubled in
the period form 1650-1850.Today the population is more than
five billion. Estimates based on research by the United
Nations indicated that it will more then double in the twenty-
five years between 1975 and the year 2000, reaching seven
billion by the turn of the century.
11
No one knows the limits of population that the earth can
support. Thomas Malthus, an English economist developed a
theory that became widely accepted in the nineteenth century.
He suggested that because world population tended to
increase more rapidly than the food supply, a continual strain
was exerted upon available resources. Malthus cited wars,
famines, epidemics, and other disasters as the usual limitations
of population growth.
With recent advances in science and technology, including
improved agricultural methods and great strides in medicine,
some of the limiting factors in population growth have been
lessened, with obvious results. International Organizations have
recommended programs to encourage general economic

Throughout history. the search for salt has played an important role 12
In society. Where there was no salt near. it was brought from great
distances. Thus, salt became one of the most important articles of
early trade. Records show that in areas of scarcity, sall was traded
ounce for ounce for gold. Rome’s major highway was called the Vla
Salaria, that is, the Sall Road. Along that road, Roman soldiers
transported sall crystals from the salt flats at Ostia up the Tiber, In
return, they received a salarian or salary, which was literally money
paid to soldiers to buy salt. The old saying “worth their salt.” which
means to be valuable, derives from the custom of payment during the
Empire. the caravan trade of the Sahara was also primarily an
exchange of goods for salt. Among ancient peoples there, to eat salt
with another person was an act of friendship.Slaves were often

Reading Comprehension
(Skipping or Skimming)
1.This passage focuses on……………
2.What is the main point of the passage?
3.In this paragraph the writer mainly……………..
4.The best title for this selection is………….
5.The writer's main purpose is………….
6.What is the topic of this passage?
7.The main idea of this passage is………….
8.Which of the following point seem to be emphasized most in the passage?
9.The purpose of this passage is ……….
15
(Scanning)
Supporting Idea
1 Topic
1 Main Idea
Main Idea
(Reading for detail)
Who, Where, When, What, Why, How
- What does "this" refer to in the second of paragraph?
- In the line 9 "them" refer to ………
From the context "eradicated" means………
16
Reading
2. ถาม pronoun reference นั่นก็คือคำถามประเภท “it” line ….. refers to….
- ถ้าข้อสอบถามถึงคำประเภท เช่น he, she, they, we, this, that, there, these,
those, one, such, the above
ถ้าข้อสอบถามถึงคำประเภท เช่น the following, as follows, bello, like, in this
เป็น it + to be (is, am, are, was, were) + adj. + to V. เช่น It is dangerous to use
this drug. ให้ใช้วิธี forward
คำตอบของ to V. ในที่นี้ก็คือ to use this drug.
use drug is dangerous.

To the Editor :
I read with great interest the article in your paper yesterday
about the growing traffic problems in our region and how the
planned construction work on a new Millers River Bridge will
exacerbate the problem over the coming months Proponents of
building a new bridge, which is scheduled to begin next month
and be completed within two years, claim that it will greatly
alleviate the traffic problem in that part of the city once it is
completed. In my opinion, that solution will be temporary at
best. Allow me to propose another idea. For the past four years,
a group of cityplanners, transportation experts, and others have
been hard at work on a plan for a light rail system to serve our
region. Of course, construction of a region-wide light rail train
system would require a far greater investment than
construction of a bridge, but it would serve a far larger
percentage of our population and the effects on our traffic
problems would be more far-reaching and permanent.
21
As discussed in yesterday's article, the new, bigger Millers
River Bridge will carry more traffic than the old one, serving
one small part of the city. The bridge has been artistically
designed and will add beauty to our city landscape. These are
small returns, in my opinion, for the expense city taxpayers
will incur for the bridge construction. Clearly, investment in a
regional light rail system is a better idea for our future.

Many people are not aware that plane trips pose several health
hazards. This is of particular concern for business travelers who
fly frequently. The more often you travel. the greater the health
risk becomes. One problem with planes is that the air in the
cabin is constantly recirculated. This means that instead of
breathing fresh air from the outside. you breathe the same air
over and over again, along with all the other passengers. This
exposes you to colds, flu, or any other contagious disease that
another passenger may have brought on board. You can protect
yourself by making sure you get plenty of Vitamin C in the days
before your flight. While on the plane, drink a lot of water. The
dryness of the cabin air enhances you susceptibility to disease.
Maintaining a general state of good health by eating right,
exercising regularly, and getting enough sleep is also important.
26
Long flights pose another sort of health problem. Being
forced to sit for a longtime in the same position is bad for
your circulation. It is particularly dangerous for people who
are at risk for blood clots and other circulatory problems.
You can lessen the risk by getting up from your seat every
hour of so and taking a walk down the aisle. Standing up an
moving around even for just a few minutes will improve
your circulation and help you feel more comfortable.
Your business obligations may not allow you to fly less
frequently or take shorter flights. These recommendations
will help you look out for your health while traveling.

32

No one knows the limits of population that the earth can

was exerted upon available resources. Malthus cited wars,
famines, epidemics, and other disasters as the usual limitations
of population growth.
With recent advances in science and technology, including
improved agricultural methods and great strides in medicine,
some of the limiting factors in population growth have been
