ABOUT ENID BLYTON ‘I want to know you from the very beginning, and go with you all through your childhood till you are old enough to read adult books. I don’t want you to be friends with me at one age only, I want to keep in touch with you all through your childhood days’ Enid Blyton was born in Dulwich, in South-East London, in 1897. When she left school, she trained as and became a teacher. She continued to teach for five years until she married and had children. Enid Blyton had two daughters, Gillian and Imogen, with her first husband, whose name was Hugh Pollock. From a very early age Enid Blyton enjoyed making up stories. She said that she liked making up stories better than she liked doing anything else. She published her first book in 1922. It was called Child Whispers and it was a collection of poetry. She went on to write more than 800 stories and poems. A number of illustrators worked on Enid’s stories, perhaps most famously Eileen Soper, who illustrated The Famous Five. But Enid always carefully checked and approved the pictures in her books Enid Blyton died in 1968 but remains a publishing phenomenon – the greatest children’s writer of the 20th century. She has become one of the best-known and best-loved writers of children’s stories and many of us fondly remember reading her books as children. She is consistently voted a children’s favourite in author polls and even the RAF’s Red Arrows perform the Enid display sequence as homage to her and The Famous Five!

SHORT STORIES Eight Famous Five short stories with Enid Blyton’s original text and contemporary design, illustrated in colour by Jamie Littler. 38 The train puffed in as they went to the booking-office for their tickets. The guard was blowing his whistle and waving his flag as they rushed on to the platform. Dick pulled open the door of the very last compartment and they all bundled in, panting. ‘Hurry up train coming!’ – I think I can hear a raced down the road to the station, which was said Dick, and they all quite near. 33 So away went the Five as fast as they could. It was dark when they reached the town, but that didn’t matter, because the street lamps were alight. The made their way to the station, half-running down the main street. FAMILY ADVENTURES In Enid Blyton’s own words “Are you a child? Or are you a grown-up? It doesn’t much matter, with these books. They are written for the whole family, and for anyone who has to do with children. They are written, as all stories are written, to entertain the reader — but they are written too to explain some of the wrong things there are in the world, and to help to put them right.” Each of the Family Adventures focuses on a different family, with different social circumstances and issues. The Family at Red-Roofs was first published in 1945 and the other stories were published through the 1950s. ST CLARE’S St. Clare’s, a girls’ boarding school which predates Malory Towers. Tricks and jokes, midnight feasts, sports matches, thrilling rescues, fun and friendship are all a part of life at the school — but so are hard work, exams, problems, hot tempers, malice and snobbery. Certainly there’s never a dull moment at St. Clare’s! The first St. Clare’s book was published in 1941 and the series of six books remains popular today. The series is unusual in that the first three titles all revolve around life in the first form while the other three focus on the second, fourth and fifth forms respectively. In 2000, Pamela Cox wrote two more St. Clare’s books to “fill in” the gaps in the series. In 2008 she wrote another, Kitty at St. Clare’s. A further 28 extensions published in Germany are available. 42,000 words approx The Twins at St. Clare’s The O’Sullivan Twins Summer Term at St. Clare’s The Second Form at St. Clare’s The Third Form at St. Clare’s (Pamela Cox) Kitty at St. Clare’s (Pamela Cox) The Fourth Form at St. Clare’s (Pamela Cox) Claudine at St. Clare’s Fifth Formers at St. Clares Nach dem Jugendbuch-Klassiker von Der Roman zum Kinohit mit vielen deutschen Leinwandstars Die lustige Wette zwischen Hanni und Nanni und ihren Freundinnen geht so richtig schief: Die beiden werden verda.. chtigt, gestohlen zu haben.
