Does newborn puppy weight matter?

In short, yes! Studies have shown that female
puppies and puppies from larger litters were
at higher risk for low birth weight (LBW). In
addition, survival rates for LBW puppies were
reduced in litters with at least one stillborn
puppy and when the dam was more than 6
years old. Furthermore, LBW puppies have
an 81% chance of death in the first 48 hours.
Therefore, early weight observation is critical.
It is recommended to weigh puppies with
a digital scale at least twice daily in the first
week and keep a record for accurate tracking.
Puppies should increase their weight by about
5-10% every day, typically doubling their birth
weight in about the first week. Be aware of
increased risk factors for LBW in your kennel
and prepared to act quickly for higher-risk
newborns.

APGAR TEST

In 1952, Dr. Apgar devised a scoring system
to rapidly assess the health of newborn
babies at birth. The APGAR test is still used
worldwide to quickly determine if newborns
might need additional assistance. Recent
research has adapted the APGAR test for dog
breeding and shown useful results.

When performing the APGAR test on newborn

puppies, five categories are evaluated.

Puppies are given a score of 0, 1, or 2 in each

category. Their total score can then be used to

quickly identify higher-risk puppies that may
