How blessed we are to have this incredible community that works with such dedication and shares so open heartedly. 8 National Pet Directory | Spring 2024 "Breeding used to be so simple," sighed a breeder, reflecting on the current state of the puppy sales market. His sentiments echo those of many breeders nationwide. In an industry where sales are sluggish, prices are declining, and customer demands are escalating, breeders find themselves at a crossroads, grappling with the transition from a breeder-driven to a customerdriven market. In the bygone era of a breederdriven market, the process was straightforward: dams had pups, listings were posted online, and sales ensued. Even during the COVID-19 pandemic, this process remained largely unchanged, albeit with expedited transactions and inflated prices. However, the post-COVID era ushered in a new reality. Customers are now more discerning, educated, and meticulous in their inquiries. They're not just purchasing pets; they're adopting cherished family members, and their expectations reflect this shift. THE THREE H'S Today's puppy customers prioritize three key aspects: the hygiene of the kennel, the health lineage of the puppies and parents, and the integrity and heart of the breeder. Kennel Hygeine and Socialization In response to heightened public scrutiny, breeders must prioritize maintaining impeccable kennel hygiene. Current practices and procedures need to be evaluated and addressed to ensure a quality kennel environment. Beyond cleanliness, emphasis must be placed on developing robust exercise and socialization plans to nurture the puppy's personality. Merely providing outdoor play is insufficient; breeders must engage in frequent interaction and individualized care. Seeking certifications above the basic state and federal requirements demonstrates to customers your accountability in both environmental standards and socialization practices. Health Transparency Today’s customers are welleducated and demand transparency regarding the health history of puppies and parents. Genetic testing is no longer an option but is essential. Failure to provide comprehensive health documentation risks disillusioning customers and tarnishing the breeder's reputation. For example, just recently a customer paid $1500 for a puppy only later to find out through testing that it was only 60% purebred. This just cannot happen in today’s world. Furthermore, showcasing the parents fosters trust and allows customers to assess both physical attributes and temperament accurately. Serving Customers As the landscape of puppy sales has changed, we must navigate challenges by embracing change.

10 National Pet Directory | Spring 2024 Heart of the Breeder Beyond standards and certifications lies the paramount importance of the breeder's character and ethos. Customers seek breeders with whom they can connect on a personal level, craving narratives and authenticity. However, cultural barriers and a lack of personal branding often impede this connection. Many breeders reading this article might be from the plain community. Cultural expectations and assumptions can get in the way and need to be addressed. Breeders must actively engage with customers, conveying their passion for the breed and showing they care more about the puppies and their customer rather than the money. EMBRACING CHANGE The shift in the puppy sales market presents both challenges and opportunities for breeders. Rather than succumbing to bitterness or resignation, breeders are urged to embrace change and innovate. This entails enhancing kennel standards, prioritizing health protocols, and refining personal branding. It's not merely about selling puppies; it's about fostering enduring relationships built on trust and mutual respect. The evolving landscape of the puppy sales market demands adaptability and resilience from breeders. By embracing change and committing to excellence, breeders can navigate these challenges with confidence, ensuring the well-being of both their puppies and the families they join. As breeders confront the complexities of the modern market, one thing remains clear: success lies not in transactions but in the cultivation of meaningful connections. Here are some testimonials from our puppy customers, that demonstrate the successful impact of the three H's: "We are just in love with our wonderful baby! He is doing so well and making friends with his new brother and sister. Thank you so much for doing such an amazing job raising him and preparing him for his new life and for sending everything we needed to get him started. It’s obvious that he was raised in a very loving home and family!" "Good morning! He is absolutely a treasure!! You did such a wonderful job preparing him for his new life. He is pottying in the grass, slept all night in his crate with no problem, and playing up a storm! Thank you so much for all the love you poured into him. Yes, we did both fall in love with each other at first sight!" "Thank you also for sending along everything we need for our sweet baby. Pick-up was also perfect and very much appreciated!! We are thrilled to be part of your Cavalier family." In the world of breeding, the winds of change are blowing strong. These days, it's the customer who holds the reins, steering the direction of the market. And you know what? For the most part, that's actually a positive shift. But here's the deal: we're faced with a choice. Will we let bitterness consume us, or will we rise to the occasion and strive for improvement? The decision is ours to make and the consequences will shape the future of the breeding industry. 12 National Pet Directory | Spring 2024 The breed's origins can be traced to the city of Boston, Massachusetts in the late 1800's, where breeders sought to develop a small, friendly, and intelligent dog with a tuxedo-like coat pattern. What we now know as the Boston Terrier came from careful crossbreeding between the English Bulldog and the White English Terrier (now extinct), with some contributions from the French Bulldog. In 1889, the Boston Terrier Club of America was formed, making it one of the first American dog breed clubs. The breed was officially recognized by the AKC in 1893. Boston Terriers have been cherished as companion animals, known for their adaptability, intelligence, and affectionate nature. They are often referred to as "American Gentlemen" due to their refined appearance and good manners. General Appearance: The Boston Terrier is a lively, highly intelligent, smooth coated, short-headed, compactly built, short-tailed, well-balanced dog, brindle, seal or black in color and evenly marked with white. The head is in proportion to the size of the dog and the expression indicates a high degree of intelligence. The body is rather short and well knit, the limbs strong and neatly turned, the tail is short and no feature is so prominent that the dog appears badly proportioned. The dog conveys an impression of determination, strength and activity, with style of a high order; carriage easy and graceful. A proportionate combination of "Color and White Markings" is a particularly distinctive feature of a representative specimen. "Balance, Expression, Color and White Markings" should be given particular consideration in determining the relative value of General Appearance to other points. Size, Proportion, Substance: Weight is divided by classes as follows: Under 15 pounds; 15 pounds and under 20 pounds; 20 pounds and not to exceed 25 pounds. The length of leg must balance with the length of body to give the Boston Terrier its striking square appearance. The Boston Terrier is a sturdy dog and must not appear to be either spindly or coarse. The bone and muscle must be in proportion as well as an enhancement to the dog's weight and structure. Fault - Blocky or chunky in appearance. Influence of Sex. In a comparison of specimens of each sex, the only evident difference is a slight refinement in the bitch's conformation. Head: Skull - is square, flat on top, free from wrinkles, cheeks flat, brow abrupt and the stop well defined. The ideal Boston Terrier expression is alert and kind, indicating a high degree of intelligence. This is a most important characteristic of the breed. The eyes are wide apart, large and round and dark in color. Eyes - are set square in the skull and the outside corners are on a line with the cheeks as viewed from the front. Disqualify - Eyes blue in color or any trace of blue. Ears - are small, carried erect, either natural or cropped to conform to the shape of the head and situated as near to the corners of the skull as possible. Muzzle - is short, square, wide and deep and in proportion to the skull. It is free from wrinkles, shorter in length than in width or depth; not exceeding in length approximately one-third of the length of the skull. The muzzle from stop to end of the nose is parallel to the top of the skull. The nose is black and wide, with a well defined line between the nostrils. Disqualify - Dudley nose. The jaw is broad and square with short regular teeth. The bite is even or sufficiently undershot to square the muzzle. The chops are of good depth, but not pendulous, completely covering the teeth when the mouth is closed. Serious Fault - Wry mouth. Head Faults - Eyes showing too much white or haw. Pinched or wide nostrils. Size of ears out of proportion to the size of the head. Serious Head Faults - Any showing of the tongue or teeth when the mouth is closed. Neck, Topline, Body: Neck - length of neck must display an image of balance to the total dog. It is slightly arched, carrying the head gracefully and setting neatly into the shoulders. The back is just short enough to square the body. Topline - is level and the rump curves slightly to the set-on of the tail. The chest is deep with good width, ribs well sprung and carried well back to the loins. The body should appear short. Tail - is set on low, short, fine and tapering, straight or screw and must not be carried above the horizontal. (Note: The preferred tail does not BREED STANDARD BOSTON TERRIER
13 National Pet Directory | Spring 2024 exceed in length more than one-quarter the distance from set-on to hock.) Disqualify - Docked tail. Body Faults - Gaily carried tail. Serious Body Faults - Roach back, sway back, slab-sided. Forequarters: The shoulders are sloping and well laid back, which allows for the Boston Terrier's stylish movement. The elbows stand neither in nor out. The forelegs are set moderately wide apart and on a line with the upper tip of the shoulder blades. The forelegs are straight in bone with short, strong pasterns. The dewclaws may be removed. The feet are small, round and compact, turned neither in nor out, with well arched toes and short nails. Faults - Legs lacking in substance; splay feet. Hindquarters: The thighs are strong and well muscled, bent at the stifles and set true. The hocks are short to the feet, turning neither in nor out, with a well defined hock joint. The feet are small and compact with short nails. Fault - Straight in stifle. Coat: The coat is short, smooth, bright and fine in texture. Color & Markings: Brindle, seal, or black with white markings. Brindle is preferred only if all other qualities are equal. (Note: Seal Defined. Seal appears black except it has a red cast when viewed in the sun or bright light.) Disqualify - Solid black, solid brindle or solid seal without required white markings. Any color not described in the standard. Required Markings: White muzzle band, white blaze between the eyes, white forechest. Desired Markings: White muzzle band, even white blaze between the eyes and over the head, white collar, white forechest, white on part or whole of forelegs and hind legs below the hocks. (Note: A representative specimen should not be penalized for not possessing "Desired Markings.") A dog with a preponderance of white on the head or body must possess sufficient merit otherwise to counteract its deficiencies. Temperament: The Boston Terrier is a friendly and lively dog. The breed has an excellent disposition and a high degree of intelligence, which makes the Boston Terrier an incomparable companion. Disqualifications: Eyes blue in color or any trace of blue. Dudley nose. Docked tail. Solid black, solid brindle, or solid seal without required white markings. Any color not described in the standard.
14 National Pet Directory | Spring 2024 I n the U.S., more than 2.8 million antimicrobialresistant infections occur each year. Resistant infections can be difficult, and sometimes impossible, to treat. As part of a broad effort by the FDA to combat antimicrobial resistance (AMR), the Guidance for industry (GFI) #263 was put into effect on June 11, 2023. These new guidelines affect medically important antibiotics such as: Penicillin, Tetracycline, Gentamicin, and Sulfa drugs. Prior to GFI #263, 96% of medically important antibiotics already required a prescription. Now, the remaining 4% of over-thecounter antibiotics will transition to prescription status. This means that your local feed or animal health supply stores will need to be licensed to accept prescriptions, and you will need to obtain a prescription for these medications prior to purchase. Antibiotics can also be purchased from a licensed pharmacy. Products such as dewormers, probiotics, vitamins, aspirin, and electrolytes are not affected by the new law. Furthermore, GFI #263 does not include preventative vaccines used in your vaccine protocols. Let’s look at some ways to proactively prepare for how GFI #263 will affect us as breeding professionals: 1 Prioritize the relationship with your veterinarian To obtain these drugs, breeders will need a valid veterinarian-clientpatient relationship (VCPR) with a licensed veterinarian. A VCPR exists when: • The veterinarian has assumed the responsibility for making medical judgments regarding the health of the animal(s) and the need for medical treatment, and the client has agreed to follow the instructions of the veterinarian; • The veterinarian has sufficient knowledge of the animal to initiate at least a general or preliminary diagnosis of the medical condition of the animal. • The practicing veterinarian is readily available for follow-up in case of adverse reactions or failure of the therapy regimen. • The veterinarian has recently seen and is personally acquainted with the keeping and care of the animal by virtue of examination of the animal, and/or by medically appropriate and timely visits to the premises where the animal is kept. • The veterinarian is not required to examine every animal to be treated but has sufficient knowledge of your specific situation to initiate and prescribe treatment. As a professional breeder, you would already have a veterinarian who sees your animals at least once a year and who comes out for emergencies. Yet if you are moving to a new location or starting a new breeding program make it a top priority to contact local Kennel Health Understanding how the new law on antibiotics affects our kennels.

16 National Pet Directory | Spring 2024 veterinarians immediately, to begin establishing a VCPR. 2 Plan ahead The prescription requirement for antibiotics means they will still be available. However, this makes planning in advance for potential emergencies critical. Whenever possible, stock up in advance for the antibiotic supplies you may need for upcoming litters, while keeping in mind the expiration date of the medications you purchase. Similarly, plan for how these changes could impact the budget for your business. It is possible you may need to allocate more of your budget to the costs associated with obtaining prescriptions and in the event prices for the medications increase due to the additional licenses required for retailers. Lastly, keep in mind that veterinarians are not required to respond to emergencies for animal owners who are not existing clients. 3 Consider alternatives There are products on the market that offer alternatives to prescription antibiotics. It can be worthwhile to consider preventative approaches that boost your dog’s immune system, therefore preventing many issues that may have called for antibiotics. Consider taking the time to understand the alternative products on the market that can offer natural infection-fighting agents. When health issues do begin to arise within your kennel, these natural alternatives can be effective and readily available tools for your kennel. Research has shown numerous herbs, oils, plants, flowers, and foods that have naturally occurring antiinflammatory, antifungal and anti-microbial properties. However, there remains to be a lack of studies on the application of these natural compounds in animals. Therefore, it is safe practice to consult with your veterinarian when implementing new kennel protocols. As the proverb goes, “A wise man adapts himself to circumstances, as water shapes itself to the vessel that contains it.” The landscape of the pet industry is ever-changing, and so we must learn to adapt to the changes that come our way. Change can be a great opportunity to take our businesses to the next level. So let us embrace the changes with a positive attitude, fostering business success for years to come.

20 National Pet Directory | Spring 2024 Dog Training We’ve covered several different aspects regarding dog training in this series so far. Now I’d like to tell you about the benefits of having dogs who are trained and obedient. Having a well-trained dog offers several advantages that go beyond just obedience. Whether you've had dogs for a long time or are considering getting one for the first time, understanding the benefits of training will develop your relationship with your dogs and create a bond between both you and them. Let’s take some time to consider the benefits of a trained and obedient dog, not only for the animal but all the people it encounters. Communication Training establishes clear communication between you and your dogs. Often, we give our dogs a command and they have no idea what we’re trying to tell them! Through teaching consistent commands and cues, you let them know your expectations, which leads to better understanding and cooperation from them. Improved Behavior A trained dog will behave better and have better manners. From basic obedience like sit, stay, and down to more advanced skills like quiet, off, and loose leash walking training develops good habits that make life with them much more enjoyable. Bonding Opportunity Training sessions are a good time to bond with your dogs. When you work together you build trust with your dog and a dog that trusts you is friendlier and more pleasant to be around. Safety and Control Training sets you up with the tools to keep your dogs safe and under control in different situations. Whether you're out for a walk in the yard, hunting, or going to the vet, a well-trained dog is going to be more predictable while being more responsive to you. Stress Reduction Stress can be a problem for dogs, just as much as it can be in humans. Stress can negatively affect dogs by leading to challenges such as: digestive issues, suppressed immune response, loss of appetite, increased aggression, and compulsive behavior. Dogs with training experience less stress because they have been taught to think through different situations. When a dog understands boundaries and expectations, there is less need for corrective measures or disciplinary actions. This ultimately leads to a more relaxed environment. As an added benefit, a recent study has also shown that interacting with a dog reduces stress and boosts Part 3

22 National Pet Directory | Spring 2024 concentration for humans too. (Yoo et al. 2024) Socialization Skills Good training exposes your dog to different people, animals, and environments. This wide array of exposures helps a dog to develop socialization skills. A wellsocialized dog is going to be more confident and able to adapt to the many things that will come their way. Dogs who have spent time in a kennel setting can be socialized well enough that when it comes time to live in someone’s home, it will be a smooth transition for them with little stress involved. Increased Freedom With training and socialization, you can trust your dog to run free in your yard without having to worry about them. Whether you’re going to get the mail or doing chores, a dog who is trained to “come” can be allowed to go almost anywhere without a leash. It’s great being able to allow your dogs the freedom to run and play even when you have visitors. Mental Stimulation Dogs need mental stimulation for good health, just as much as they need physical exercise. Training sessions provide mental stimulation for your dog, keeping their mind engaged which prevents boredom. 10-15 minutes a day spent working with your dogs will challenge them and eliminate behavioral issues that come from boredom and lack of exercise. We can see the benefit of a trained dog goes beyond obedience. In fact, it enriches the lives of both you and your dogs. By investing time and effort into training, you set the foundation for dogs that are happier, healthier, friendlier, and better adjusted for whatever they may encounter in life. RAMBO For more information: 330-473-8311 AKC English Bulldog Blue and Tan Merle Carries chocolate. VET MINUTE How often should I give my dogs a bath? Generally, healthy dogs need a bath every 1-3 months to minimize odor and oil buildup. This varies largely depending on coat type. Thick, doublecoats (Siberian Huskies, Chow Chows) shed constantly, which means bathing is required less often, but daily brushing is important. Short, single, or wiry coats (Pitbulls, Terriers) are also relatively low maintenance—a handful of baths per year is sufficient. Soft, curly coats and non-shedding coats (Poodles, Bichons, Yorkies) collect dirt faster, so bathing monthly is ideal. When in doubt, use your dog’s smell and skin health as a guide. Allergies, skin infections, and excessively oily or dry skin increase bathing needs. Most of these dogs need baths one to three times per week, depending on veterinarian recommendations.

Additionally, treating the dam when she is expecting a litter can be a great prevention technique to avoid sick puppies. Studies show if a dam is given Fenbendazole on day 40 of the pregnancy and the treatment is continued daily until the puppies are 14 days old, puppies have 89% less roundworms and 99% fewer hookworms than puppies of untreated dams. (Burke et al., 1983. Saari et al., 2019.) Remember to weigh puppies and dams so that the proper dose of medication can be used. Dosing for dams should be based off of her pre-pregnancy weight.

Welcome to Timberside Berners and the Miller Family! We just built a new home in 2019 located out in the country close to some timber in Central Illinois. It was back in 2012 when I decided to get some Bernese Mountain Dogs. There temperament and their personality seem to be a great fit for a service dog or a very valuble pet. Our breeding dogs must meet a high standard of genetic qualities including OFA certificates. All our dogs are genetically clear of DM & DM (BMD type) and VWDI. Please contact us with any questions or to schedule a visit. Wishing you Gods richest blessing -The Miller Family. Here at Friendship Farms we have been raising Mini Aussies now registered as “AKC Miniature American Shepherds” for 26 years & counting. We have been using the benefit of genetic testing for 20 years. We have shown dogs in the past & have had a national champion puppy. We prioritize several things when considering keeping a breeding animal: style, balance, good breed characteristics, great temperament, good health testing & impeccable movement. To achieve this we puppy puzzle every puppy at 8 weeks & beyond. Since we started this process, our Aussies always pass an OFA test. When you are looking for new breeding stock let us know. Matching up bloodlines & a complementary phenotype is our specialty. We currently have 9 breeding age stud dogs available for sale. 46 National Pet Directory | Spring 2024 Greetings from Stony Meadows and the clan. We are Ivan and Elizabeth Stoltzfus, and our family business includes our seven children who are ages two through twelve. Our children are a big part of our kennel business and are a big reason we transitioned away from a small hobby kennel and my full-time job in a welding shop. We moved two hours north of where we grew up, stepping out on our own to a 134 acre farm in Northumberland County, PA. There we have built a new 2,500 square foot kennel. It wasn’t easy leaving everything we knew and were familiar with. Neither of us has immediate family in this area, but we are extremely blessed by the close-knit community that has welcomed us with open arms. The transition started when, after 11 years of marriage, Elizabeth and I realized that Daddy working away from home all day and the boys getting older wasn’t the ideal setting we wanted for our family. Having always enjoyed raising puppies, I soon realized that having a commercial kennel might be an avenue where we could realize our dream of Daddy working at home full-time. We also thought maybe this would include having some farm or livestock ventures on the side for the purposes of living more off the land, working closer with nature, and providing an environment for our children to develop their budding love of nature and animals. Keeping this goal in front of us helped us to buckle down and keep going through the low times of getting a start-up kennel going amidst post-covid puppy prices, and establishing and maintaining loyal customers. Our focus from the start was a medium-sized kennel with thirty to fourty adults and going the extra mile with quality genetics and excellent customer service. Ultimately, we’d like to have our puppies started on crate training, leash training, etc. We are also currently considering implementing the Canine Care program. In our kennel layout we implemented the somewhat unorthodox setup of using GDM whelping dens as our primary indoor pens. This creates a den environment for the dogs. The whelping females especially enjoy the quietness and solitude of the enclosed den. It also creates an overall quieter and cleaner kennel and is downright enjoyable to spend time in the kennel without dealing with yapping dogs. It is especially Business Spotlight A visit to Stony Meadows.

48 National Pet Directory | Spring 2024 beneficial when visitors enter the kennel and we can have a normal conversation without needing to yell above the din of dogs just so we can hear each other speak. We also went with large gravel exterior runs to provide the adults extra room to move around. We plan to add grass play yards, hopefully this summer. Our puppies also have outside access. This helps to transition to house training because at a very young age they figure out it’s better to potty outside rather than messing up their bedroom. Our main breeds are the specialty Mini Golden Retriever, which is considered a designer breed. We are working towards the goal of having them recognized as a standard breed. We also breed AKC genetically clear Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, and the newer AKC Biewer Terriers. In addition, we raise some poodle crosses, but eventually we would like to narrow it down to two or three breeds and just specialize in those. So far, we sell our puppies strictly at retail. This has been challenging in a post-covid puppy market, but we have recently seen some promising signs of improvement. Going above and beyond what the customers expect, and responding promptly to phone calls and emails is a priority for us. A website hosted by ACA give the customers a chance to read up on us, and read customer reviews before they pick up the phone and call us. This seems to put customers at ease and helps convince them that we are legitimate, actually care about our puppies, and dispels some of the “puppy mill” stigma. We have recently had to adjust our paperwork and advertising slightly with the implementation of some new dog laws for Pennsylvania. One of those is that we need to post our kennel license number on all puppy ads. An unexpected benefit of that requirement was comments from customers that seeing we are a licensed kennel and are inspected gave them confidence to buy from us. We have started bringing our customers into the kennel front lobby to meet our puppies. So far, we have had nothing but positive reactions to our kennel setup and the customers enjoy seeing where the puppies are raised. One of our biggest challenges was to figure out how to get ahead of Coccidia and Giardia. We feel we brought it into our new kennel when we moved and have been dealing with it ever since. After a whole year of intense medical treatments, sometimes starting the prevention protocol on fourday-old puppies and seemingly the problem was worsening, we were bewildered on what to try next. What appears to be the answer for us, came in the form of a more natural approach, which was fermented and raw dog food. We don’t claim this is the approach for everybody. In our case, we felt we were severely overmedicating and over vaccinating our puppies. Now by providing them optimal nutrition, the early results look very promising and we are excited to work more closely with how God’s original design was supposed to work. In today’s commercialized food industry, it’s sometimes hard to find, but if we are truly searching and stay open-minded, I strongly feel we can find a way to avoid a lot of the toxic chemicals that we
49 National Pet Directory | Spring 2024 normally were dumping into tiny puppies. Some of the other things we are doing as a family include having a flock of 65 Katahdin hair sheep. As I write this in early April, we are having new lambs born daily. It is absolutely wonderful to go out with the children and see a newborn lamb get up on its shaky feet for the first time. Then in a few days, it is frisking around the pasture with its siblings and neighbors. We also have about 450 pastured laying hens. In addition, we sell puppy supplies, human health products, and a variety of other products to the local and surrounding communities. We welcome questions from readers, and enjoy interacting with other breeders. I feel strongly that we as breeders need to work together for the common good. It is important that we share ideas on improving our breeding standards and how we can be a better light and example to a watching public.
