Cheerful greetings on this humid summer
day. Sounds of crickets and bullfrogs fill the air, and
the supper table is filled with garden abundance.
It has been a busy few months, as we've
traveled to events for local breeding organizations
throughout a number of states. It's been wonderful
to see old friends and meet new ones. Thank you
to all of the many helping hands that make these
organizations and events possible. We are grateful

share their encouragement. What a blessing to be

WHELPING Eliminate the surprise

Being prepared and available for whelping is ideal. But running a kennel business can be
hectic. Tired of being surprised by the timing of a new litter? It is possible to know the exact
day whelping will start.

We know that the length of pregnancy in female canines averages 63 days. However, viable
puppies can be born 5 days before or after this expected date.

There are some physical signs that can begin in the last week of pregnancy. These may
include: the genitals becoming enlarged and flabby; clear vaginal discharge; mammary
development and possible lactation.

An excellent way to accurately predict the onset of whelping is to measure and record the
dam's rectal temperature, using a chart like the one provided on the right. An initial fall in
body temperature occurs within the final 12 - 24 hours of pregnancy.

Tips when taking rectal temperature:
• Normal canine temperature is 100 - 102.5°F
• 12 - 24 hours before whelping body temperature drops to 99.0°F or lower. In small breeds
this can be even lower.
• Start measuring rectal temperature 7 days prior to expected whelping (day 56 of the
pregnancy). The chart on the right can help you record these readings.
• Rectal temperature should be measured twice daily, at 7 or 8 in the morning and evening,
while the dam is calm.
• Not all thermometers are the same; be sure you are using a rectal thermometer. Be sure to
use the same thermometer for all readings to ensure accuracy.
• Note that the temperature may not stay down after the initial drop; it can come back up.
• When the temperature drops below 99.0°F (lower in small breeds), or there is a significant
drop from the last several readings, whelping will occur within 12-24 hours. Now is the time
to coordinate for an extra set of hands, or let your veterinarian know to be on-call if you're
working with a challenging breed.

Steps when taking rectal temperature:
• Begin by shaking the thermometer down below 98°F (unless using a digital thermometer).
• Sterilize the thermometer with rubbing alcohol.
• Stick the thermometer into a jar of lubricant (like petroleum jelly), used
only for this purpose.
• Make sure the dam is laying down. Do no allow her to sit, which could risk
breaking the thermometer.
• Gently insert a sterile thermometer about 1" into the dam's rectum.
• Wait at least 90 seconds before removing thermometer to check reading,
holding the thermometer the entire time.

concern for any professional kennel program. While some infertility problems are inherited,
many can be the result of outside factors.

Test for Brucella Canis
Brucella canis is the bacteria that causes Brucellosis in dogs. The disease can lead to infertility
in both male and female canines. It can infect dogs of any breed and any age. Symptoms in
male dogs can include: swollen lymph nodes, difficulty walking, swollen or inflamed genitals.
Treatment will require antibiotics and can include neutering to prevent spread of the disease.
The AKC Canine Health Foundation recommends Brucellosis testing every two months for
males being bred frequently.

Dogs are carnivors, and therefore must have enough protien in their diet. Seek high quality
proteins that are righ in vitamins to meet your dog's dietary requirements. Healthy fats, from

70 days for a stud's sperm to mature, exposure to extreme weather can cause a temporary
decline in fertility for several months. Kennel ventilation, misting systems, and wading pools
with fresh water can help manage hot weather. Also, be sure your groomer is not using a
heated air blow dryer on your stud.
