Big storms might rip the new grass banks up and carry them
down the stream, which would break our hearts for sure.
Having said that, the watercourse has never looked this good.
Thanks to all involved in that and let’s all show our apprecia-
tion by using the areas to socialize and enjoy our time here in
Thornhill.
Talking of enjoying our time makes me think of the odd com-
plaint we receive in the office from time to time. I don’t know
if it is just because we are coming out of winter or not but
the complaints about barking dogs have definitely dropped
off considerably. Whatever the cause, I do hope it is due to an actual drop in
unrestrained dogs within the estate. I do still see dogs walking off the lead in
areas they are not meant to be and I must stress to dog owners to please en-
sure their dogs are on leashes unless in the designated area. So, what are the
new complaints of late? Cars parked on the sidewalk, left for months in the
same place and not following our rules in this regard. In terms of the estate
rules cars need to be parked on your own property. Obviously when you have
visitors or folk staying over for a few days you will need to park on the street
or on the verge, but this should be kept to a minimum. Not cars parked on the
same place for so long that we can see them right there in the same place in

FROM THE CHAIRMAN
Often, we used to see kids’ parties in the station with the children climbing
all over the fire trucks, hoses blasting water all over the place and smiling
kids pulling levers and flashing lights. At times the trucks would leave with
the kids during the day and drive around the suburb blasting the horns,
harmless fun if it was once or twice a year. Painful for the residents if it was
every weekend. Lately we have seen them leave the estate and head over to
the training grounds close to the factory. As they go they have been blasting
the sirens with the sound bouncing over to Lakeside and Thornhill. This has
brought things to a head with many complaints arriving at our office and be-
ing escalated to the authorities in charge of the Fire Department. Negotiations
have been underway so we hope to see the disturbances drop off or go away
completely. Concerns have been raised that it is inappropriate to be tying up
state resources in this sort of activity when they may need to attend an urgent
fire somewhere. In light of township fires and the fire in the city where we
saw firemen lose their lives, this cannot be ignored. To that end we ask our
own residents not to add to the problem by participating in this sort of thing.
Onto the sunshine news. Christmas is coming, summer is here, and our social
committee has so much planned for us. I expect us all to have one of the best
summers yet in Thornhill. Please do your best to support our community
driven days by coming out and participating where you can. It is always
great to see so many of us socialize together at a time when the world seems
to want to put us all in boxes, red and blue ones in the US, Brexit or not in
the UK, Black or White in SA… All too much for me. This month will see our
mighty Boks tour the UK at which point I will have to put myself in a box. Bok
or Scot? Oh dear, I hope the choice is not as tough as I expect the game to be,
one which I aim to be sitting in Murrayfield watching, come on the ??? May
the best team win!
As always, it is great to be in touch, I am happy to see our magazine develop
with new writers and topics and I encourage any resident to submit their own
stories for consideration. Always great to hear from new sources. Until the
next time, stay safe.

THORNHILL LIFE
AEL Emergency Information
Anyone living or working within a 7 km distance of the Modderfontein
Industrial Complex would be well advised to take note of an informa-
tive advertisement placed in local media by the Modderfontein Com-
munity Awareness and Emergency Response (CAER) Committee.
The advertisement has been updated with the aid of AEL Mining
Services and advises people what to do in the unlikely event of a gas
escape causing a major emergency at the Complex. It has been placed
in five Caxton publications: the Bedfordview & Edenvale News, the
Kempton Express, the North East Tribune, the Alex News and the Tem-
bisan.
A major emergency is indicated
by an undulating siren which will
sound continuously from the com-
plex for the first 10 minutes of the
emergency.
This is the same alarm that is
tested every Friday at exactly
12:00.
On hearing the siren, people are
urged to move indoors and ensure that everyone nearby, and animals
too, are moved indoors. All windows and doors should be closed, and
ventilator fans and air conditioners switched off. The complex has an
arrangement with radio station Highveld 97.4 to broadcast informa-
tion relating to the emergency, it is therefore important to listen in for
up to the moment information as you may not hear the all-clear contin-
uous siren with doors and windows closed.
People are also notified that local emergency services may be called
in to assist with the emergency and, if so, their instructions should be
followed.
Residents are urged to inform their domestic workers, gardeners and
staff of the above procedures.
The next emergency drill for the Modderfontein Industrial Complex
will take place on the 19th of November 2018.

cause that was the day the children went trick or treating in Thornhill.
For everyone that attended Halloween on the 27th of October, I’m sure
you will agree, it was a fun filled day had by all. The children could not
wait to get trick or treating on the way, but were first treated to a mag-
ic show while enjoying a refreshing ice lolly to cool them off before
they began their great walk around the estate. Very soon, festivities
were well on their way and the streets of Thornhill came to life with
the shrikes and thrills of excitement from over 200 children and yet
again all residents showed off their fantastic community spirit!
We were very spoilt this year with 23 houses taking part in the fun by
dressing up their homes and handing out generous amounts of sweets
to the many witches, ghouls and vampires that came to visit.
Special thanks go out to:
• All the residents who registered their homes for trick or treat, with-
out you this fun filled day would not be possible!
