Watercourse upgrade
Work has started on the watercourse where three of the old ponds,
which have disappeared over the years due to silting, are to be rein-
stated. The first pond, which is situated in the road reserve, will have
probably been completed by the time you read this article. The second
pond, east of Myrtle Road will be starting in early June.
We will keep our residents updated on the progress, but please feel
free to take a walk and look for yourselves. The new ponds will be an
ideal place for your weekend picnics, but it would probably be better
for use in the
summer time.
The ponds
are designed
to stop any
further ero-
sion of our
river banks.
We would
also like to
thank Frank
Haupt of Civec
Engineering
and his team
for all their
assistance in
designing and
overseeing
the project.

Security
After a lengthy investigation the decision was taken by the THOA to
purchase two security vehicles. The reason being a saving in excess of
R 20 000 per month. The vehicles will now be seen patrolling our es-
tate with the Thornhill logos and signage identifying them as security
vehicles. There will be no change to the overall security and iMvula will
remain as our preferred supplier.
Albert Gatsheni has now been promoted to Tango 1 and will be replacing
John Seele who resigned last month. David Manana, who has previously
worked as a relief Tango, will now fill Albert’s position as the new
Tango 2.

Craft Gin & Beer Evening

On Friday the 25th May we had our first Craft Gin & Beer event at the
Thornhill Estate club house. Irrespective of the coldish weather, 220
residents/guests took part in this social event. Thank goodness for the
amazing bon fire that Kevin arranged for us and the outdoor heaters, we
did not really feel the cold.

Coffee and Irish coffees sold by the Oaks kept us nice and warm from the
inside, while Clifford served warm meals to all the guests at the event.
Thank you to everyone who made this event possible, and we hope this
was just the first of many more to come.

A special thank you to all the generous sponsors of gifts that were handed
out by way of lucky draws. We specifically want to thank the following
sponsors for the amazing gifts:
• Fahrenheit restaurant for the meal vouchers;
• Samsung for the wireless speakers and backpack with other goodies;
• Emma & I for the stunning jewelry parcel;
• Wowee Salon for the beauty voucher;
• Enchanted Flowers for the most exquisite flowers;
• Letabo Spa for the beauty voucher;
• Tranquility Spa for the spa vouchers;
• Tech Time for the sports watch;
• Demi Deruyter for the generous Woolworths voucher;
• Dominique Rusch for the lovely silver wear;
• Cleaning Importers for the cleaning products;
• Fine & County for the bottled water Continued....

Modderfontein circa 1950s

This is a photo in a collection of mine,
taken by Dave Sparrow around 1985/
1990. I like reminding our communi-
ty from time to time that we should be
eternally thankful to Dave Sparrow, a
very well-known developer, whose ge-
nius, foresight and commitment to this
area, was the beginning of the transfor-
mation of Thornhill, previously known
as ‘Modder Village’, into becoming one of
the most sought after estates in Gauteng.
Another pic of one of the Village houses in
Thornhill Avenue from the same peri-
od when the area was descending into
becoming a slum – and that is no exagger-
ation.
Every now and then, when I come across
pics of the old Modder Village like one at
the entrance to our very beautiful estate, I again do not exaggerate, when
I tell you my heart almost skips a beat. The memories come flooding back
into my very being. This was the road to the shops the café and Dam 1.
I clearly remember at a very young age my Mom holding my hand down
this road so many times taking me for a swim at the dam (where all the

MODDERFONTEIN LIFE

kids learnt to swim) or taking me shopping at the shops, where we bought
every need in those wonderful old-fashioned days before the world changed.
The change rooms were at the Dynamite Café, next to the dam and where we, in
later years, held very raucous parties with radio grams and LP’s of Procal Harem,
The Hollies, The Beatles and all the other wonderful groups of the time, mainly
bought from Hilton Radio in Orange Grove.

For many of us, our first kiss and first drink were all taken within the safe walls
of The Dynamite Café. I can almost taste the wonder of growing up here in the
1950s and 60s, and more particularly, the weekends. Every day seemed like a
new day filled with much happiness and expectation and the only irritation and
interlude in our lives was having to go to school. Bunking and smoking were a
great pastime and the sick notes were a dangerous problem that kept us awake
nights before school the next day. There were just so many kids in the Village and
Lakeside and the bus service was a dream – every hour to and from Sydenham
bus terminal until late into the night which gave us an opportunity to hit out into
far flung areas including Orange Grove (The Radium Beerhall was a favourite and
remains so up until today), Highlands North, Yeoville, Hillbrow and even central
Johannesburg which was full of movie houses, hotels and restaurants.

After finishing school at Northview High, I went off to Walvis Bay for my army
training and never really took much notice of my deteriorating childhood abode,
even though from where I stayed in Edenvale, I probably drove through Modder
4 or 5 times a week to get to our amazing sports club up on the hill where every
sport was available to all. This is where our fun just continued with a wider
group of friends who were travelling from all over to play baseball, cricket, hock-
ey, and golf in newly acquired Beetles, Anglias, Austins, and Volvos for a lucky
few. My first really desent car was a white manual 504 Peugeot in 1973 bought
in Germiston for R2 800!

It was only after getting married in 1976 and moving around Edenvale, Kemp-
ies, Cape Town and Benoni that around 1990 I started drifting back to Modder
with Cathy, Nick and Moni on weekend drives... “Not Modder again Dad!” I can
remember coming from the backseat on more than one occasion, however I am
eternally grateful that we all eventually agreed at some time in early 2005 that
Modder really was a possibility and we bought into this wonderful community
and estate in May of the same year, a move we have never regretted.

I would like to take this opportunity to express my great thanks and appreciation
to our Chairman and all the trustees and managers of our estate, and the guards
and gardeners, for their endless and selfless tender care for the people and this
place of my birth, my home where I grew up, and where we will probably live
until we die. Thank you to our Creator for all this as well, and for the protection
of our place and community.

Allan Bartram, within the most beautiful, historic garden village of
Modderfontein

MOFFERFONTEIN LIFE

The final chapter

The Friends of Modderfontein Library held their final meeting recently, clos-
ing this chapter of community involvement after almost 7 years.
Over this period the Friends hosted lively Story Time sessions for children,
monthly book sales which attracted buyers from far and wide and Coffee
Mornings with interesting and entertaining speakers. Funds raised were
used to support the Library, purchasing new books or equipment.
Heartfelt thanks go out to members of the Modderfontein community,
Thornhill and Lakeside residents, as well as community members from fur-
ther afield – Edenvale, Kempton Park, etc – for supporting these events.
Pictured are Friends members: back row from left Marian Janssen, Eileen
Powell, Sonya van Es, Frayne Matthijs and Sally Hogan.
Front from left Maryke Ewen, Dale Cherrington.

Share your stories with us!

We would love to hear from our residents, so if you have any stories to share
with the Thornhill community, please get in touch! It could be on your hobbies,
