FROM YOUR CHAIRMAN

hat an AGM that was! First of all, we nearly had to
hold it over due to lack of members attending. We
needed 51 for a quorum and only achieved that

Waround 10 minutes past the official starting time. Now

most of the trustees are quite happy so long as the meeting takes
place and we get through it. Most of them hate it when I insist
on them sitting at the front like a row of nine pins waiting to get
smacked with some curved ball from the left field. So, when I get
uptight and mutter under my breath about lack of respect and
how on earth do the other couple of thousand people that live
here think things get done, they just roll their eyes and hope the
quorum is formed soon.

My good friend Alan Hardy chastised me after the event for biting his head off before
we started, I can’t recall what triggered it but I was dealing with a last-minute hitch
I had not seen coming. After doing this for so long I don’t expect to be taken by
surprise by anything, and that is when it happens. In reality there was just a minor
correction to some wording we had missed out so the rest of the morning went
very well as we moved through the agenda. No new trustee’s so you have the same
bunch for another stint, can’t say that is a bad thing as time in the hot seat seems to
improve all of our patience on difficult issues as well as broaden our horizons to how
others see and want the estate to be run. We could do with a couple of new people
on the Governance Committee as we have seen some members leave so if there is
anyone out there that has good communication skills and the ability to think objec-
tively while paying attention to detail please get in touch with the office and they
will put you in touch with the GovCom.

Let me say a big thank you for the many residents that did turn out to show support
or ask questions. I hope it was worth the effort. The only real irritating thing for me
was the fact that the roof over the entrance was not finished on time as the contrac-
tor had promised. However, I believe we could all see the progress and I think I was
forgiven for not quite predicting that one correctly.

Highlights of the AGM was not the meeting itself but the soft music and snacks
provided while we registered for the meeting. Okay, maybe the music was not that
soft but it was pretty catchy and I enjoyed it anyway. The snacks were a good idea
and very tasty too, thanks to The Catering Lark, always very tasty and great to look at
too. Topics that were covered extensively included road traffic behaviour within the
estate. We are hearing more and more calls for speed bumps throughout the estate
and this is all caused by a minority of drivers. We have asked residents to contact the
office with the details of any cars or contractors vehicles that they think are speeding
within the estate. If we build up a profile of poor drivers we will have a better chance
of success in dealing with them.

The Chairman of our Governance Committee, took us through some changes he was
investigating, to establish a Stabilization Fund without raising an additional levy to

do so, but to fund it from existing fees, fines, penalties and other sources of income
already existing, all in the interest of sound financial prudence. Members present
agreed that if found viable, the necessary changes to the Constitution to give this
effect could be circulated to members for acceptance rather than waiting for the next
AGM.
We were also asked to plead with our dog walking residents to start carrying plastic
bags for their dog’s excrement. This is becoming a problem in our well-manicured
parks as well as other places, and while we will eventually put up poles with bags
in them for you, can you please consider taking a bag or two on your walks? Just lob
the pooh into the bag and the bag into the bins located conveniently close to you ;-)
Thanks for that.
We did have one bit of shocking news to deliver to our residents that took place on
Friday, June 23rd. Tens of thousands of Rands worth of damage has been done to our
security lights along the golf view fence as well as in other places in the estate. It
would appear that youngsters from within the estate spent some time on Friday after-
noon and early evening, moving down the fence and smashing the lights off their con-
nections. Vandals are back with us once again but this time with a vengeance. We will
be letting the community know the outcome of our investigations but, on behalf of
our members, we are certainly resolved to press charges against the identified miscre-
ants should it prove necessary. This type of incident is a risk to the whole community
as our lights are a front-line defence item allowing the guards to see areas of concern
as well as warn them of trouble if they are not working.
The question we need to ask ourselves is does anyone know the youngsters involved?
If so, we would appreciate them coming forward with information. We intend to inves-
tigate this thoroughly and it will certainly prove easier for the guilty parties to own
up rather than wait for us to arrive at their door. You can imagine how disheartening
this is for those of us that arrange and monitor our security on a daily basis. We know
kids will be kids but this is not acceptable at all and I am sure you all agree. Please
chat to your children, encourage them to have a great time in the estate. They should
be able to go about the estate knowing they are safe and can enjoy themselves. But
with this great freedom to roam about comes the one little bit of responsibility. Do
our infrastructure no harm. It is there for your protection. Please everyone, have a
word with your families and just explain how we operate and that this is a community.
We are here together to make the best of it for us all.
Next time I will attempt to introduce you to our brave firemen and woman, all I have
to do is get up on a Sunday at 6am to catch both shifts… now you know why I never
get to that story. Thanks again for all of you that turned up and to those that didn’t,
the snacks were well worth the effort as was the scintillating company, if I do say so
myself.
Till next time, stay safe and enjoy your estate.
Stephen W Burrow, Chairman THOA

THORNHILL EVENTS

A ball of a time

On Saturday the 10th of June the Social Committee hosted a Father’s Day
Putt Putt and Pint event at the main park.
A nine hole mini putt putt course was set up on the sports field and the
kids and dads had fun trying to navigate the somewhat lumpy course to try and
get a hole in one! There was a lot of serious concentration and a lot of serious
fun.
Afterwards everyone enjoyed boerewors rolls and beer tasting provided by
Oakes Brew House and the kids let off loads of energy on the two jumping cas-
tles sponsored by Remax.
Thanks to everyone who attended and contributed to this fun event. Special
thanks to Lewana and Bernadette for their assistance and to Remax for sponsor-
ing the jumping castles.
See you at the next event!

Thornhill Community Centre

We are so fortunate to live in a beautiful estate with lovely parks
and gardens to enjoy, and to add to that we have the added asset
of a Community Centre.
The Community Centre can be hired by residents on weekends for functions
such as kiddies birthday parties or kichen teas etc. This allows you access to
the hall from 6am in the morning till 6pm in the evening.
The THOA team have been updating the items in the Community Centre and
have purchased additional chairs as well as cutlery, crockery and glassware,
reducing the need to hire in too many additional items.
To enquire about hiring the Community Centre please contact the office.

THORNHILL LIFE

It’s that time of the year!

Ican’t believe it is that time of year again. It seems to come around quicker
than Christmas or those dreaded birthdays. It has all the fun of a damp
dishcloth and heralds only fear and speculation.
What am talking about? Why our necessity to submit a breakdown of our
annual income and expenditure to our erstwhile leaders of course (or at leasts
a reasonable facsimile thereof) in the form of – wait for it – drum roll...
The Annual Tax Return.
It is important to remember the need for accuracy when completing your tax
return. However there is one question which has always attracted the devil
within me and that is;
“Do you have anyone dependent
upon you?”
This is how I would like to answer
that question and how, once upon
a time, a brave sole in Pretoria
actually did.
“Yes...
42 million illegal immigrants
1.1 million drug addicts
28 million unemployed
245,000 prisoners in 67 prisons
550 parliamentarians plus thou-
sands of retired politicians as well as the President’s five wives and 24 chil-
dren”
The South African Revenue Services returned his submission with the notation
that the answer he gave was unacceptable to which the man replied;
“ Sorry. Did I leave someone out?”
So hurry up and get filing your return and pay your taxes like the very good
citizen that we know you are so that the government can continue to exist in
the luxury they have become accustomed to with their limousines, mansions,
second homes, holiday homes, legitimate children, illegitimate children, wives,
mistresses, private planes and overseas holidays.
What do we need roads with no potholes for? Or street lights and robots that
actually work or a functioning education system etc. Such unnecessary
luxuries.

THORNHILL LIFE

Gardening in July

We tend to spend too much time
indoors in July. The mornings are
chilly but it does warm up; this
wnter take some time to enjoy
the winter sun!

A few winter chores:
• Continue to water the garden once a week in the morning.
• Don’t worry to feed anything now while it is too cold for growth.
• Service your Lawn Mower in preparation for the growing season. And check
your tools are clean and sharp.
• Lie on the lawn with a book and enjoy the winter sun. You deserve it!

Something to buzz about
How much thought do you give to our little honey bee. Do you know that
without bees very little of the food we eat would even be in existence?
These little pollinators are threatened worldwide by disease. Evidence is
unfolding that fungicides and pesticides find their way into pollen supplies
and compromise the well being of the hive. Compromised bees are more sus-
ceptible to disease.
