Getting Off the Fence
I f you’re an Apple enthusiast (which you likely are since you’re reading this magazine), you know how hard it is to pass on
the latest products. We often wrestle with that hard-to-pinpoint yet powerful allure of a new iPhone or MacBook and the
reality that we may not need that new device. In this issue, you’ll find hands-on reviews of many of Apple’s latest products
to help you get off the fence and make informed decisions about where to make (and how to justify) your Apple purchases.
In my review of the Apple Watch Series 7 on page 14, I make a case for only upgrading to the Series 7 if you already own a
Series 4 or older. After waiting several years and prudently holding off in the face of appealing features like the always-on display
and blood oxygen sensor, I was finally ready to buy. All it took was seeing the full-screen keyboard and slimmer profile of the
Series 7 during Apple’s unveiling last fall. It didn’t matter that Apple analysts were predicting a larger redesign and additional
health sensors with the Series 8 if I waited. I was already sold—the features combined with that indefinable appeal of a new
Apple product had tipped me over the edge. On page 12, you’ll get an account from our Managing Editor, Amy Spitzfaden-Both,
of how she decided to upgrade to Apple’s premium iPhone line for the first time ever. After years of opting for Apple’s budget
models with a friendlier price tag and fun color options, she finally sprung for the iPhone 13 Pro. While you’ll hear the advantages
of the Pro’s superior battery life, powerful processor, and impressive camera features, you’ll also hear her case for sticking with
budget models in the future.
Probably the biggest predicament you’ll face is whether to buy the 2021 MacBook Pro. It’s a massive upgrade that includes
features we’ve been wanting for years, but it’s also the biggest financial investment of them all, costing you anywhere from
$2,000–$6,000. With Apple’s newest Pro notebook, Apple delivered its own silicon processors, an impressive 64 GB RAM
option, ample ports for easier connectivity, improved battery life, a 1080P webcam, and a gorgeous edge-to-edge mini-LED
display. SEO Content Strategist Leanne Hays walks you through the features and weighs whether it makes sense to wait for a
new 2022 MacBook Air, which could very well deliver many of the features you want at a much lower price point.
Last but not least, Feature Writer Elisabeth Garry helps you think of creative ways to use Apple’s Bluetooth tracker, the AirTag.
Whether you want to keep an eye on your pet while you’re at work or plan a scavenger hunt for your kid’s birthday, you’ll find fun
ideas to help you make use of Apple’s cheapest product (page 46).
We love to hear from you about what products you’re loving and investing in. Email [email protected] and tell me about the
Apple products in your life and why you chose them!
All In on iOS 15
Whether you’re buying new products or not this spring, you can enjoy that magic feeling of something new from Apple as you try
out the latest software features with iOS 15. In this issue, Amy has put together over 100 of our best tips for the new operating
system. You can use Live Text now to pull text straight out of a photo and save it to a note or search the web with it (page 24). You
can use Safari’s new tab groups to organize your online life into different workspaces (page 23). And you can use advanced audio
and video features as well as call Windows and Android users using FaceTime, and even share your screen (page 28)! Amy has
hand picked all of the best tips worth knowing, which you can flip through all year as an easy way to master your iPhone.
I hope you enjoy this issue and find inspiration and support for your love of all things Apple.

THE DESIGN
The gripe I’ve always had with the Apple Watch is that it
looks like what it is—a minicomputer strapped to my wrist.
While I maintain that Apple makes the best smartwatch on
the market, I’m envious of friends who have watches that
look more like a traditional timepiece, like the Garmin that
not only has a round display but also a longer battery life and
health monitoring that tracks things like hydration and stress.
Apple didn’t cater to my design aesthetic with the Series 7
(and likely never will), but they did make some notable
improvements. The display is slimmer with more rounded
corners, giving the watch a lower-profile look. Best of all, the
new display is bigger and spans edge to edge, making way for
the main selling point of the Series 7, the full-screen keyboard.
