From the Board

by Gerry Francis, President

Fiscal year 2017-18 has again brought change to ACC. You have seen the Clubhouse
in a new light—painted, planted and shaded along with new furniture, new menus and old
pictures; you have seen the Amenity Lawn evolve to 95% completion—great views, new
lawn area, beautiful new furniture, a fire pit, and new umbrellas on the way; you have seen
the pool begin a transition—a new Fairway Lounge with bar, a kids room, a rebuilt and
painted pergola, removal of the plexi-glass windows in the curve now allowing for a
breeze; you have seen re-surfaced tennis courts with Pickleball lines added; you have seen
new members--- growth from 470 to 485; and you have a new Golf Pro, a new General
Manager, and a soon to be hired new Food and Beverage Director. Whew!!
As the 2018 fiscal year ended on Sept 30, 2018, I can report that financially-unaudited, the Club has had
a successful year. Both the operational and the capital budgets have concluded operations in the black with
excesses being directed to a few delayed projects and to our reserve funds. The Finance Committee and the staff
have been working diligently to create the 2018-2019 Budget and I am pleased to advise you that the Board of
Directors at its September meeting approved the operating and capital budgets which began October 1, 2018.
This budget is based on our current membership of 485 and will include a 2% increase in dues beginning
January 1, 2019. The budget will include salary increases for some staff, particularly those who have been with-
out since 2014 or longer, enhancements to the Greens and Grounds budget to replace funds that had been
reduced in prior years, new equipment for Greens and Grounds and the kitchen, upgrades to the pool pavilion, and
improved wifi for the clubhouse and pavilion. This new budget will continue to provide the resources to upgrade
and enhance the Club for members use and enjoyment as was accomplished during the 2017-2018 fiscal year.
I continue to encourage each member to actively support Leanna Giles, Director of Membership, toward reaching
our goal of 500 members. Our future is dependent on having a core membership at or above this number. Only
through a solid membership can we not only maintain our programs and facilities at a high level, but also be
planning our next endeavors and how to fund them.

From the General Manager

Charlie Nolette, General Manager
There is no question that fall has arrived! With this change of seasons, comes a whole

host of changes at the club as well. You know all the usual fall favorites are back, and you
have seen some changes to the menu to reflect the season. There are several things that
you may not have noticed or know about that I want to make sure you were aware of.

To begin with, we are still in the interview process to fill the Food & Beverage Director
position. Some of the skills that we are looking for are wine knowledge, craft cocktail
experience, being a hands-on leader and active manager, great teacher and trainer, and
experience managing multiple outlets. Food and Beverage as a team is in a really good
place as a whole. With that being said, I am confident that we are just a few small changes
away from having great personal service with dynamic menus and club events! This is a key role on our team
and one that needs to serve our staff with greatness by teaching them and building up their confidence and skill
set to provide you and your family the best service around. A large part of that will be to facilitate ways for our
senior staff of Gerry, Tammy and Leah to share with our younger staff the likes and dislikes that these three have
memorized.
Another behind the scenes change is the new amenity lawn. We are working hard on crafting some guidelines
that will help preserve that asset while moving it to the forefront of our available spaces to host events and
socialize. This is such a beautiful part of our grounds which so many of you contributed to, and to not utilize it
would be a mistake. If you were at the Member-Guest Golf Tournament this year, you were able to experience
how cool it was to be sitting on the top of the hill overlooking the playoffs while enjoying some pizza and bar
treats.
I want to say thank you so much to those of you who I have met at club events and in the dining rooms.
The hospitality has been great, and I truly appreciate the care and concern for the settling in and enjoyment of
Burlington with my family. We are slowly but surely getting familiar with where things are and what’s going on
around town. If I have not had the chance to meet you yet, I look forward to that opportunity. Thank you all for
such a warm welcome and a great first month here. I am looking forward to a fun and busy holiday season this
month and next. See you around the club!

Event Catering

by Brittany Myers, Catering Director
[email protected]

Happy November! We have a lot of great things coming your way kicking off the holiday
season. We are looking forward to hosting our annual Thanksgiving buffet on November
22nd, as well as the Brunch with Santa on December 16th. These are great opportunities to
bring your family and loved ones to the Club to enjoy the holidays without the worry of the
cleanup.

We also have hosted several great events on the Amenity Lawn, and are looking forward to
many more to come! This is a great space for a cocktail reception, birthday party, or even
just making s’mores by the fire! I’ve had several attendees choose to even sit by the fire pit
to visit in a quiet space during a loud event.
Finally, just a reminder to book your holiday party if you haven’t already done so! Dates are filling up fast. If
a date you were looking at is already booked, consider hosting a brunch or lunch instead. This is a great way to
switch up an annual party, and who doesn’t love a brunch?!
With that being said, we are looking to have the Club decorated for the holidays the week after Thanksgiving.
With the beautiful trees and lights everywhere it will be easy to get in that holiday spirit!
Thank you, and I look forward to kicking off my second holiday season here at Alamance Country Club!

Employee of the Quarter

Congratulations to Elizabeth Madrid

ACC’s Employee of the Quarter, Elizabeth Madrid, has contributed to the Fitness Center’s
success for almost a decade! Elizabeth started her career working part time at the front desk
of the Fitness Center, and from day one she made her mark on the Club. Not only did she
complete the required duties of a Front Desk Attendant, she sought out and completed tasks
that would make the Fitness Center a better and more welcoming place. Whether that meant
greeting a new member with a huge smile, or finding a small hidden inch of a hidden corner
that needed to be cleaned, Elizabeth was always there to make it happen.

Elizabeth then continued her education and became a certified Massage Therapist. Now,
she is relied on by many members to help relieve aches, pains, and soreness. Her new role
as Massage Therapist hasn’t stopped her from seeking out new challenges in the Fitness Center. Just recently
she has reorganized the Gift Certificate log, deep cleaned the massage room, and received continuing education
on a new massage technique known as “cupping.” The members and the Fitness Center are lucky to have Elizabeth
to help keep them up and running! Congratulations to Elizabeth for a recognition well deserved!

From Tee to Green

by Peter Horn,CGCS | Director of Golf Course and Grounds

What wild weather we had in October! We were well prepared for Hurricane Florence by making
sure all our equipment was fueled up, chain saws ready to go, and the irrigation pump house shut
down. We ended up with a little wind and six inches of rain. Then came Tropical Storm Michael with
winds over 50 miles per hour and three inches of rain. I don’t think anyone expected the high winds
and widespread loss of power to occur. Within two days of the storm we had the course fairly clean with the exception of
several trees which fell close to tproperty lines. Otherwise, we didn’t lose any key trees on the course and by the end of
October all debris had been cleared.
The cooler weather finally arrived by mid-October and the Bermuda grass growth has begun slowing down. The greens
are still in the recovery mode from the prolonged heat of the summer, and mid-October they still had areas that looked a
little thin. We are spraying these areas with small doses of fertilizer to help them fill in. If we use too much fertilizer it will
cause a surge of growth and reduce the quality of green speed and roll.
The leaf clean-up is in full swing and we will try to get around the course as quickly as we can. However, some days are so
windy that we can’t get around with our blowers, so please be patient as we work our way around to clear the course.
With the colder temperatures arriving, we will start to have frost forming on the fairways and rough as well as the greens
and short cut areas. It is vital for the grass to be clear of frost before cart and foot traffic can occur. Again, please be patient
as the frost clears.
The Golf Course Maintenance crew and myself wish you and your family a Happy Thanksgiving.

by Scott Schofer, Director of Tennis | [email protected] Tennis

As the weather changes, we will begin preparations to close courts 1-3 and courts
4 & 5 for the winter season. Our hard courts (#6-#8) will remain open, weather permitting.
Please call the tennis shop to make a court reservation, reserve the ball machine or to
check on court conditions as colder temperatures could close all the courts. We will also
be taking down the windscreens, bringing in benches/chairs and winterizing the hydro
courts. Please contact me if you have any comments, questions or concerns. Always at
your “service”.

many guys sign up. Entry fee will be $15 per player and includes beer/drinks and light

to have 16 guys signed up for this event. Please email, text or call if you’d like to play.

Pickleball Play Days

Saturday, November 3 & 10 | 9:30am

ACC members - Did you know that Pickleball is
the hottest and fastest growing sport in the U.S.
and quite possibly the world? What is Pickleball?
It’s a sport that combines tennis, badminton and
ping-pong. It is played by two to four players
using paddles and a plastic ball with holes, on
either an indoor or outdoor court about one-third the size of a
standard tennis court. The game has become particularly popular
among people in their 50’s, 60’s and 70’s looking for an activity that
offers good aerobic exercise without being as strenuous as tradtional
racket sports - which affords players the chance to socialize during
the game. We would love for all members interested to take part in our Pickleball Play Days. It’s a great fun
game for the entire family!! Please call the Tennis Pro Shop at 336-584-4115 or email Scott
([email protected]) to sign up or for more information.

It’s Back! Our Annual Maintain Don’t Gain Challenge Wednesday

Festive parties and holiday treats can add up to a lot of 5:30am - 7:00pm
fun and a lot of extra pounds (average holiday weight Closed Thanksgiving Day

gain is six to eight pounds). This program will help you Friday

become more active and eat healthy so you can maintain 7:00am - 7:00pm

How does it work? or lose weight instead of packing on holiday pounds.

Between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day, your goal is to maintain your weight no more than 2 pounds

above your initial start weight, and to be physically active for at least 30 minutes each day. To maximize weight

control, pay attention to the foods you choose - make smart selections and go easy on the holiday treats. This is

the perfect time to increase your fruit and vegetable intake to at least five servings a day. Also, it’s important to

begin the day with healthy breakfast choices. After the challenge, you’ll be rewarded with the best gifts of all:

an active, healthy lifestyle, control of your weight and feeling great about your holiday habits.

Why participate?

For many people, starting a physical activity program can be difficult - especially during the holiday season.

Work, family and other responsibilities often crowd out time to do something good for yourself. This program

can help you get back on track and stay there by making fitness fun with activities, articles, and rewards.

Who can participate?

This program is available to all members of Alamance Country Club.

How do I get started?

Stop by the Fitness Center and complete the registration form by November 21st deadline and the program

materials will be provided to you. You will need to weigh in before Thanksgiving and again before January 4th

on the Fitness Center’s scales.

For more information, or to sign up for the program, please feel free to call or stop by the Fitness Center.
We look forward to helping you to “maintain, not gain” this holiday season.
