Alamance Today

October 2018

From the General Manager

Charlie Nolette, General Manager

First things first……who’s my team?

There are two categories of sports here (professional and college) that require some
form of declaration. I see collegiate sports as the one most folks have strong emotional ties
to and based on our geography I assume that this is really what you might be interested in.
So for professional sports I am a Boston fan all around. I grew up in New England (NH
specifically) and have always pulled for Boston teams long before any of them were champions
multiple times. Now for “my college team”… you’ll have to read the rest of this article!
I wanted to take this opportunity to share a little bit about myself and what I am intending to accomplish
here at Alamance CC in the first few months. To begin with I’m by nature pretty competitive and enjoy healthy
competition. I am careful however about bringing this into work environments as not everyone shares this and it
can create some uncomfortable situations. This being said I plan on spending a lot of my first few months at ACC
getting to know the team and our staff as a whole to see if friendly competition might work here. I am also a very
inquisitive person, I love to learn and this will be very evident as I join the team because I will be asking LOTS of
questions of everyone. It is crucial that I understand correctly all the various points of view, the histories, and the
aspirations of everyone at the Club. I will strive to be available to you as members regularly to get to know each
other, resolve issues, or just chat over a cup of coffee. It will be the information gathered these first few months
that I will use to drive the operational and strategic plans going forward. This may appear to be slow at first but
I assure you that the information will not be wasted and over time will bear fruit.
I’m an early morning guy, have my quiet time to nourish my spirit and then breakfast and usually a run. I am
looking forward to the challenge of marathon training where there are hills as opposed the pancake flat Low
Country that I am coming from. My office routine that is probably most important to you is communication.
You can expect that I will be in the clubhouse office sometimes but not always. The Club facility as a whole is
something that I need to be very familiar with. This may take me out on the course to look at a bunker issue or
down to the fitness center to test out the new spinning bikes. My goal is to be on top of things before they
become “issues” and to do this I have to be out and about. This being said my office door is always open and
I welcome your input and observations. These first few months will be spent gathering information and building
relationships. It is my goal over these first 90 days to get a firm grasp on the club culture and getting to know
both you as members and the great staff. So please feel free to stop in and say hi at lunch or dinner. I have a
pretty serious sweet tooth so if you need a little chocolate to get you going please stop in! It’s no fun snacking
alone.
I hope that by now you have picked up some sense of humor and levity. I love serving people and enjoy the
relationships that come from that service. I don’t know all the specifics of the mid and long range plans for the
physical plant here at the club yet. But I can tell you that the things I will be working hard on starting day 1 are a
club culture for staff where they are challenged and rewarded with clear guidelines and goals. I see this club as
a great place to work where skilled people come together to make amazing things happen and have FUN doing
so. I envision systems being something that take time to develop but are key to providing the structure for our
team to reach their full potential. It would be my hope that if our team is having fun serving the membership it
will create an atmosphere that is attractional and consistently delivers great experiences.
Now for the moment of truth……my team! So I am a man of principle and the principle of where my tuition
dollars went is where my fanship goes. So for this reason I am a Gamecocks fan in all seasons! Some may say
that’s not allowed, I have to choose a NC school. I just can’t go there, it doesn’t feel right. And what if USC
happens to make it to the tournament again in my lifetime and we happen to play a team from NC in some shade
of blue or red? It just wouldn’t be right. So that’s my team Gamecocks all the way, good or bad (more often the
latter) I’m garnet and black on game day!

Happy fall! I can’t believe how fast the year is flying by. We are very excited to announce
that we are accepting reservations for our new Amenity Lawn! This is a great outdoor space
between the main Clubhouse and Pool Pavilion that will be perfect for cocktail receptions,
birthday parties, wedding ceremonies, golf tournaments, or even just making smores by the

great way to switch up your next event at Alamance Country Club.

Also, the dates are filling up fast for the holiday parties, so it’s not too early to start
planning your get-together. Let us help take some of the holiday stress away with a breakfast,
brunch, lunch or dinner event planned specifically for your group! Whether it be a simple

From Tee to Green

by Peter Horn,CGCS | Director of Golf Course and Grounds

The month of September has brought us a wide range of weather and the warm days and nights
have kept the bermuda grass growing. We are still on our regular mowing schedule as we have
been all summer.

Hurricane Florence brought us 6 inches of rain and some wind. The Thursday before the storm hit
our coast, we had an afternoon shower that caused the bunkers to wash. We left them as is until we knew all the rain had
stopped. Once the hurricane passed we couldn't get the big blowers out for three days as the course was saturated for
multiple days. However, we were able to get most of the clean up done that week.

The greens are doing well and we have done some grooming and topdressing during the past few weeks. As fall
arrives and temperatures start to get cooler, especially at night, the bermuda grass growth will slow down. Also with the
cooler weather the leaves will start turning and begin to drop. Hopefully we can stay ahead of them and keep the course
somewhat clean. By late October to mid November we can look for our first frost. We are very careful with the first few
with letting play out too early as the grass is not fully dormant and is somewhat tender. Full dormancy usually doesn't
occur until late December. We will work closely with the pro shop staff if we have any delays in the morning.

Fall is a great time to play golf, hopefully you can come out and enjoy the cooler weather.

Fitness

by Matt Sommer, MS, CSCS, CES, PES,
Director of Fitness | [email protected]

A common question I get from my clients is, “Why do
we need to change our exercise routine periodically?”
Well, here is the simple answer. Individuals should
consider varying their exercise routines for two fundamental
reasons: (1) to prevent boredom associated with doing the
same things workout after workout and (2) to avoid or
delay reaching a plateau in workout performance and, subsequently, training
results. Research has shown that adding variety to an exercise program can
improve adherence. Exercise scientists at the University of Florida observed that
individuals who modified their workouts every two weeks over an eight-week period appeared to enjoy their
workouts more and were more inclined to stick with their exercise programs when compared to individuals who
followed the same workout regimens week after week. Varying your exercise routine can also help you stay
physically challenged. Many of the body's physiological systems (e.g., the muscular system) adapt to an exercise
program within approximately six to eight weeks. If you do not modify your exercise routine, you reach a plateau
because your body has adapted to the repetitive training stimulus.
There are several ways you can spice up your current workout routine, including boosting the intensity of your
workouts. For instance, if you jog or run, try incorporating some intervals of sprinting (e.g., sprint to a given
landmark, then jog to the next one) or adding more hill work to your run. You can also cross train and perform
different activities to provide your body with a new challenge. A nice alternative for resistance-training exercises
involves changing the sequence in which you perform the training exercises. By fatiguing the muscles in a new
order or pattern, you are requiring them to adapt to a new training stimulus. Another option for adding variety to
strength-training workouts is to replace some or all of the exercises in your workout routine (e.g., substitute a
dumbbell pectoral fly exercise on a stability ball for your typical barbell bench press exercise).
Keep in mind that doing the exact same workout, day after day is not necessarily a bad thing. Some people
enjoy a predictable, consistent routine. They don't mind the possibility of experiencing a training plateau and are
content to maintain their health and fitness levels with a comfortable exercise habit. However, many individuals
need to push themselves to new levels and try different activities to stay enthusiastic and excited about their
workouts. By varying their exercise routines, individuals cannot only stay physically challenged, but mentally
stimulated as well.
If you have any questions or are interested in the pursuit of optimal health, feel free to call the fitness center
to set up a time to get together. Stay fit, and as always, my door is open, so feel free to stop by and see me.
