Alamance Today

May 2018

From the Board

Good Day Friends! By the time you read these comments, the flowers will be in full

bloom, the trees will be full of leaves, and the fairways and greens will be a beautiful green.

Likewise, you will find the Club also changing with tennis courts 6,7 and 8 being refurbished

- with one court having additional lines for Pickleball; the edge (coping) of the pool being

refinished, and the pool trellis and pergola being repaired for rotted wood; and, you will see

work beginning on the Amenity Lawn between the Clubhouse and Pool Pavilion. To be

successful in its work the Club needs you to be active at the ‘46 Grill, in the Fitness Center,

on the tennis courts, on the golf course, and eventually in the pool. Activity drives our

visibility - be active, use your Club, we need your presence.

Gerry Francis Additionally, the Long Range Planning Committee has begun its work. There will be

Club President much discussion on how best to use the Club’s downstairs space, determining a time for
redoing the greens and sand traps, deciding how to enhance programs and space for children,

determining how and when to enhance the pool and pool pavilion, including an outdoor bar area, considering how

to enhance Fitness Center space, etc., and lastly, how to finance these endeavors. We welcome your input in our

work. Contact any one, or all of the Committee including: Gerry Francis, Bill Gomory, Ray Womack, Mike Cross,

Tiffany Pittard, John Treadwell, Doug Massey and Mike Allen.

Together we can continue to strengthen the Club, its facilities, programs and finances. Thanks for what you

have done, are doing, and will do.

Gerry Francis

From Tee to Green

The greens are healing slowly from aerification due to the cooler weather. Some of the
nights in mid-April saw temperatures in the mid to low 30’s. By the first of May we should
be getting our putting speeds back to where they were in early April.

Ray Womack, our Greens Chairman, put together a paragraph stating the shape of some
of the thin and bare areas on the course.

Peter Horn

Peter Horn, Winter Kill Update from the Greens & Grounds Committee
CGCS
We have a few spots on the golf course that are slow to green up due to the cold and
wet weather we had over the winter. We had Bill Anderson, the Carolinas Golf Association

Course agronomist, ride the course with Peter recently. He and Peter took soil samples of some of
Superintendent our bare areas and the news was encouraging. Most of our bare areas have live roots under

the surface. They are a little slow coming in, but Peter and Bill feel confident that most of

our areas will fill once we get some warm weather.

There may be a few areas that will need some sodding, but we do not anticipate any large

expenditures to that end. Please be mindful of these bare areas and try to keep your carts away from them as

they grow in.
