Inventory in Springboard I ’m guessing by now you’ve heard someone from PCS talking about ‘Springboard’. Springboard is our new web-based platform. Initially, modules running in Springboard were Employee Portal, Workflow modules and Meeting registration. In April two clients agreed to be beta testers of our first core Insight module ready to be released in Springboard, that module is Inventory. The beta testers had some setup and training in April, from there they have been playing around with the new screens in the training database and transitioning their production work. Here is what they have to say about it: The 2nd core module to be ported over to the Springboard interface is Purchasing. It should be ready to go shortly after you read this article. Next up are Cash Manager and General Ledger. Stay tuned for more details. If your utility wants to get on the list to implement the Inventory module in Springboard, please contact Marc or Shelley. Marc - [email protected] Shelley - [email protected] I have enjoyed learning to use the new Springboard Inventory Module. It is similar enough to the RDP version that I do not have to start from scratch to use it, but offers the convenience of a browser-based program. I can group and filter inventory items in ways that make sense to me. Being a multi-service utility, we have electric, gas, water/sewer, and telecom inventory items. I only need to see electric, so I can filter out the others. I also group my items by Class ID which helps me find related items quickly. It is easy to remove and re-order columns of data. Many fields are available, but the ones I don’t need for a particular view can be easily removed. The ones that remain can be ordered in a way that suits me. Shelley and her team at PCS have been great partners in launching the Inventory Module (and the others). They have listened to any suggestions we have, and are quick to respond to an email or phone call when we want to discuss something or need help. I am looking forward to working with PCS very soon on the Purchasing Module! 12 Professional Computer Solutions Efficiency is key when it comes to managing service orders both in office and the field. Service Order Tracking (SOT) is migrating to Workflow and now has a tile in the new Springboard environment. SOT enables utility staff to capture and update job-related information digitally. This eliminates the need for manual paperwork, reduces errors, and ensures accurate documentation of service activities, inspections, and repairs. Users will receive an email notification alerting them an SOT step has been assigned to their name. Upon clicking the tile, a screen will show each SO number in their name and a description of what SOT step is ready to complete. By clicking the view button on the SO, a page will appear showing the header information about the service order along with tracking steps. Users will now be able to click on the icon and see all SOT steps assigned to them in the “My Work” functionality. The option to view or add images to each tracking step is available by clicking the paper clip icon. A step response and date completed may be entered from this page and the SOT will continue onto the next step after the user has completed theirs. PCS developers added a Workflow History tab to provide each user a review of SOT steps they have previously completed. There is a filter to narrow the search and the program will display who the SOT was assigned to next. This facilitates seamless communication between field workers, supervisors, and dispatchers. It enables the sharing of important information, such as service details, customer preferences, and equipment requirements, resulting in better collaboration and coordinated efforts. By clicking the History button, employees can view the dates and times of when action was taken on each step and by whom. This new workflow option has been incredibly beneficial for staff in the field by allowing them to pull up SOT in a browser on their device and not be tethered to a desktop RDP session. Field workers can receive real-time updates on service orders, allowing them to stay informed about any changes, new assignments or requests. By utilizing the “My Work” feature, employees can not only see SOT but any other Workflow in their name. With the ability to track service orders accurately and communicate effectively, utility staff can provide prompt and reliable service to customers. This enhances customer satisfaction, as they receive timely updates, experience faster issue resolution, and enjoy a smoother overall service experience. Central Phishing Listen up, fellow netizens! There's a dangerous game being played online, and you could be the unsuspecting target. I'm talking about phishing—the crafty art of luring unsuspecting individuals into divulging sensitive information. In this article, I am going to unveil the tactics used by cybercriminals, explore the perils of phishing, and arm you with the knowledge to dodge their deceptive hooks. The Bait and Hook Technique: Phishers are clever tricksters who masquerade as trustworthy entities to deceive their victims. They'll send you seemingly legitimate emails, messages, or even create fake websites that mimic trusted brands. Their goal? To lure you into revealing passwords, credit card details, or other personal information. Don't take the bait! Spotting the Red Flags: While phishers can be cunning, there are telltale signs that can help you sniff out their scam. Look out for suspicious email addresses, generic greetings, spelling or grammar errors, urgent requests for personal information, and unexpected attachments or links. If something seems fishy (pun intended), it's time to be on high alert. The Urgency Trap: Phishers love to create a sense of urgency to make you act without thinking. They may claim that your account is compromised, a payment is overdue, or a fantastic offer is about to expire. Remember, legitimate organizations won't pressure you into immediate action or ask for sensitive information via email or message. Take a step back and verify before you act. Double-Check, Don't Click: Phishing links are like digital landmines waiting to explode. Hover over links before clicking on them to reveal the actual URL. Check for misspellings, odd domain names, or slight variations that may indicate a scam. When in doubt, type the website URL directly into your browser instead of relying on links provided in suspicious emails or messages. The Human Firewall: You are the last line of defense against phishing attacks. Be skeptical, question everything, and don't easily trust unsolicited messages or requests for personal information. Educate yourself and your loved ones about the dangers of phishing. By being vigilant and spreading awareness, you can create a strong human firewall against these digital con artists. Phishing is an ever-present threat in the digital landscape, and we must remain vigilant to protect ourselves and our online identities. Stay one step ahead of phishers by spotting the red flags, questioning suspicious requests, and double-checking before clicking. Remember, you are the key to safeguarding your personal information and thwarting the phishing predators. Stay informed, stay alert, and keep those deceptive hooks at bay! 14 Professional Computer Solutions Client Feature Norwood Light and Power Station 495 Switchgear Replacement Project: Known to many as “the town everyone comes back to”, the alluring spark of Norwood, MA, isn’t limited to its rich history, diverse population, or continued economic growth. Located about 30 minutes from the booming metropolis of Boston, Norwood is experiencing a great deal of growth including a rebuild of the hospital, Moderna’s campus expansion and even the Norwood Space Center. Behind the scenes, powering these projects, businesses, and the homes of Norwood’s 30,000 residents, is Norwood Light Department (NLD). Its origins can be traced back to the early 20th century when the town decided to establish its own power distribution system. In 1912, NLD was officially incorporated, marking the beginning of its journey as a reliable provider of electricity to the community. Over the years, NLD has striven to enhance its infrastructure and services to meet the evolving needs of the town. Reliability is essential in the electrical industry, and the staff of NLD take that seriously. The list of initiatives and accomplishments is extensive. One recent notable achievement occurred at Station 495, where a significant replacement project was recently completed. This project aimed to modernize the facility by replacing a switchgear that had been in service for over 50 years. Station 495 was originally built in 1970 and had two 93 MVA dual secondary winding transformers. To this day Station 495 provides power to more than 70% of NLD’s customers. Through the years multiple developments, replacements and expansions were made but ultimately the switchgear was reaching the end of its service life and needed to be replaced. A Bright Step Towards Powering Norwood Pictured above are photos of the switchgear originally installed in 1970. Below are photos of the final product after updates were made.

Client Feature In 2021, the NLD staff took their proposal to Town Meeting for approval and as of May 2023 they have officially finished moving all the feeders to the new switchgear. The total cost of the project came to $6 million, and by investing in this project, NLD is taking proactive steps to meet the growing energy demands of the community. Norwood residents and businesses can continue to depend on a robust and reliable power supply following the completion of the Station 495 Switchgear Replacement Project. The upgraded switchgear will enhance the system’s ability to withstand power fluctuations and protect against potential disruptions caused by severe weather events or equipment failures. With these improvements, NLD is striving to minimize downtime and keep the lights on for the community. Keeping the lights on and minimizing downtime are aspects NLD has continually succeeded in. In fact, the average interruption duration totaled 26 minutes in 2022, compared to an average of 140 minutes last year for all U.S. electric utilities, excluding major widespread outages. This accomplishment was nationally recognized by the American Public Power Association (APPA). The Station 495 switchgear replacement project showcases NLD's commitment to progress and its proactive approach to meeting the energy needs of its community. This project and the recognition they’ve received further underscore Norwood Light Department's ongoing efforts to deliver top-notch service and contribute to the thriving community of Norwood, Massachusetts. I t is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we inform you of the recent passing of Jim Christensen. Jim was PCS Chief Financial Officer from 1996 to 2014. As the CFO, Jim played a major role on the management team at PCS and directed all financial aspects of the company. In the early years, it was extremely difficult for any banking organization to lend money to a software company where the assets of the company were on a floppy drive. Yes, floppy drive, that is how far back Jim goes with PCS. Jim worked with the state of Iowa to get funding for job expansion which later led to an almost 30% increase in staff. Besides his love for his family, Jim had a love for technology and the tax code. One of his famous sayings was “the spirit of the tax code is . . . “ and we never doubted his position. His proclivity for technology was second to none. Whenever we had a question on Excel and Access (yes, you guessed it, a spreadsheet and database), Jim had the answer. In fact, PCS still has some of his spreadsheets and databases in use today. Jim always had the time for questions and mentored numerous staff members throughout the years. He worked with the current PCS CFO Danyel Jepsen for several years. “Jim was a great mentor. I worked in public accounting before joining the PCS family and while I learned more about PCS and the industry, he was very patient. I was fortunate he continued employment at PCS to help me transition into the CFO position. He always helped me with my questions. He loved analytics and with his guidance, I learned more about Excel,” she said. As he retired, the team he mentored kept the ship financially sound and growing. A great accomplishment for a great leader. One of Jim’s long-time staff members, Paula Wiebers, remembers Jim not only as a PCS leader, but a friend. “Jim was a dedicated PCS leader and a true friend. The kind that makes you feel secure and successful in your position with the company. I was truly blessed to work with Jim for many years.” PCS General Manager, Angie Miller, worked closely with Jim and bonded over their love of numbers. “I was blessed to work with Jim and gained a deep understanding of the financial impacts of the daily decisions, work and practices at PCS. He and I had a common nerd gene for accounting and financial impacts. I greatly miss discussions with Jim. He always managed to challenge your thought process to inspire continued growth. The biggest thing that made me shake my head and chuckle inside (or sometimes bite my tongue) was when he started a comment with “The right answer is…” We continue to be blessed by working with Jim’s son Brian. I just pause and grin some days when he makes a comment that sounds just like his dad – maybe the words “the right answer is…” comes into play." In recent years Jim has had several health struggles. Nevertheless, his affinity for technology and the tax code continued. PCS is forever grateful for Jim and his work with PCS. Our condolences to Jim’s wife Linda, son Brian, and the rest of Jim's family. Tribute In Memory of Jim Christensen "Jim was a dedicated PCS leader and a true friend. 20 Professional Computer Solutions New Employees Eric Wiggins - IT Technician Eric Wiggins comes to PCS with a degree in Management Information Systems (MIS) and an extensive background in management. While working his way up at a mineral tub manufacturing facility, Eric was able to go to school with the goal of eventually being in the IT field. “I’ve always had a love for IT. This industry is always changing and that is what keeps it so interesting,” he said. Originally from Dunlap, IA, not too far from where PCS is located, Eric has been tinkering with computers since he was little. So, when the opportunity to put his knowledge to use in a professional setting came about, he jumped at it. “When I saw the (PCS) ad, I knew I had to inquire. Everyone was so welcoming even from the first interview. I knew this was where I wanted to be.” Although he’s only been at PCS since April, Eric already has set goals for himself and plans to settle in. “I want to continue to grow within PCS. My main goal is to work towards system administrator and soak in all the knowledge along the way,” he said. The feeling is mutual, Eric has already become a welcome asset to our staff and IT department. While he manages his growing responsibilities at PCS, back at home, his responsibilities are also expanding, by one. This September, they are expecting a new addition to their family of six. Welcome to the team Eric! Welcome to the team! Jacob Bruck Andre Garcia We are excited to welcome two new summer interns Jacob Bruck has joined the Application Development Team before heading off to Iowa State University this fall. Andre Garcia is a senior at University of Northern Iowa and has joined our IT staff for some hands-on training before he finishes his college career. Summer Interns

Joe Popham Retirement I would like to add my congratulations to Joe for his many years of work at PCS. I met Joe when he was the Data Processing Manager (a 1970s term) at a cooperative in Wyoming. PCS and Joe had several years working together. Then with a twist of fate, PCS was lucky enough to have Joe join us at PCS. This was at a time in the late 1990s when everything was phone line dial up and support over phone lines was difficult. Joe was a pioneer in the Information Technology business. Joe and the great team at PCS, designed and implemented what would become cloud hosting that would benefit clients for years to come. At the time, even Microsoft did not know what “The Cloud” would become. The idea was so great that the Iowa Software and Technology Institute awarded PCS the Internet Initiative Award for two years in a row. While other groups said it would not work, Joe and team went to work and made it happen. It did not end there, with everything going to the “Internet of Things”, Joe again was an advocate for PCS security and implemented several technologies and services for the protection of client information assets. PCS Management often asked Joe, “how could this cost so much” but security in the technology business is no place to cut corners. Joe was also an advocate for having credit cards processed by a PCI compliant company which benefited PCS and its clients in many ways. In the last few years, while Joe had stepped down as I.T. Manager, he still was available to help out on a part-time basis where PCS could leverage his many years of experience. One note about Joe, he is a second generation I.T. person. Joe’s father was also in “data processing” or whatever we called it back in the 1970s and 1980s. Joe, I congratulate you for all you have accomplished. Way to go, thank you for being part of the PCS Team, a great advocate for the client, and a personal friend. I wish you and Jill the best.
