Professional Computer Solutions 3 Our last message in the June newsletter started with, summer is upon us. Fast forward a couple months and summer is on the way out. For those of us in the Midwest, we can’t help but think about the cold and snow-filled days farr off in the distance. But, before we make the jump to winter, we get to relish in the beauty that is fall in America’s Heartland. As we approach fall, or as the Business Development Team likes to call it, Conference Season – PCS is out and about and in full travel status! Our hope is to spend a little bit of quality time with each of you! Doug Dorhout (Central), Blair Patnaude (West) and myself (East) will be attending a litany of conferences across the country that you can reference on Page 2. Why do we attend these conferences? The obvious answer is for potential leads but it’s much more than that. This is also one of our opportunities to strengthen relationships with our current clients. We understand that these organizations are important to you, and in turn, important to us. Doug, Blair, and my number one priority is the people and relationships we currently serve. We are here to help and look forward to seeing you whenever we possibly can. Whether it’s a quick conversation between sessions, a short demo, or dinner out on the town, we want the relationships with those we serve to be the reason we’re your first call. As summer turns to fall, and fall to winter, we look forward to seeing you at conferences and in your offices. As Springboard development marches on, there is no shortage of topics for us to discuss! Stay tuned for information as it relates to our fall Regional Meeting also! Enjoy your last few weeks of summer! Cover Photo: Aerial view over the Northwest Arctic Borough of Kotzebue, Alaska. 4 Professional Computer Solutions PASSION SKILL INTEGRETY We have had a few weeks now to reflect on AUEC 2023. When PCS staff met to recap the conference, one word echoed through the room – empowering. This year was our second year hosting a joint user conference with CSA at the picturesque Perdido Beach Resort in Orange Beach, Alabama. The growth in PCS client attendance was a testament to the recognition of the conference as a valuable platform and resource for utilities seeking to optimize their operations and drive efficiency in an ever-evolving industry. A special thanks to the following PCS client utilities for attending: The primary focus of AUEC was to educate and empower users to make the most of the solutions and technologies PCS/ CSA have to offer. Training and interactive sessions allowed attendees to delve deeper into the features and functionalities of products and services, equipping them with the knowledge needed to optimize their day-to-day processes. “AUEC was informative, relaxing, and worthwhile!!! The Connect sessions refreshed our memory on things that we currently have that we may not be using, and things that we don’t have but are now available and we might want to request. We took notes on things that PCS is working on that will be of great help in the upcoming releases. It was very helpful to have dialog between users as to how we both do things and use the modules.” Joanie Groshans & Tracy Simpson Highline Electric Association Conference attendees were provided with plenty of opportunities to engage with PCS and CSA staff as well as other attendees in both formal (classroom) and informal (resort / beach) settings. Perdido Beach Resort furnished the perfect backdrop for the AUEC conference, offering guests a blend of business and leisure. The interactive nature of the various sessions allowed users to pose questions to staff and engage in discussions with other utilities from around the country about how they are navigating various challenges PCS looks forward to AUEC 2024 as we have big things in the works! We sincerely thank the 22 attendees who represented their respective utilities this year and look forward to your attendance at the... “AUEC is a great opportunity to interact with staff from PCS and other utilities. The information I was able to gather about both current options and the things PCS is working on has huge value to me in my job and in what I can share with others at my utility. I loved hearing about the new options that have come out recently – many of which, we’re going to take advantage of. I especially liked the chance to hear about what PCS is currently developing, and even having some input on how those things could work best or what processes they should focus on first. AUEC is extremely valuable to me and to my utility, and I would recommend everyone plan to attend in 2024 if you can! MaryDawn Buntin Kittitas PUD 2024 AUEC • June 24-27, in Orange Beach, AL.

Connect Enhancing Efficiency & Customer Experience: The Benefits of Mobile Service Orders for Utilities I n the rapidly evolving landscape of utility services, adopting innovative technologies is crucial for companies to stay competitive and improve their operations. One such technology that has proven to be immensely beneficial for PCS utilities is Mobile Service Orders (MSO). MSO systems enable utilities to streamline their workflows, enhance efficiency, and deliver superior customer experiences. MSO provides an instantaneous bridge between the office and field crews, allowing crews to be in communication with the office while orders are being worked. MSO empowers field service technicians with instant access to critical information on their mobile devices, both iOS and Android. This includes customer details, service history, equipment specifications, and GPS navigation to the location. By eliminating the need for paper-based documentation and manual data entry, technicians can efficiently track and update job progress in realtime. This accessibility enhances decision-making, reduces administrative tasks, and leads to faster issue resolution. The implementation of MSO systems enhances the overall customer experience. With quicker response times and streamlined operations, utilities can significantly reduce service downtime for their customers. Mobile Service Orders (MSO) has emerged as a gamechanger for utilities, revolutionizing the way they handle field service operations. Additionally, the ability to make data-driven decisions, empowering staff in the field and in the office with real-time data, further solidifies the benefits of adopting MSO solutions. As utilities continue to navigate an increasingly competitive landscape, embracing Mobile Service Orders becomes imperative for companies striving to achieve operational excellence and deliver exceptional customer service. PCS not only offers a suite of mobility focused solutions, but provides one-on-one support, training videos and webinars to empower staff with the best tools and knowledge available. 8 Professional Computer Solutions Central BEYOND PASSWORDS Hey there, security enthusiasts! Are you ready to take your online security to the next level? Get ready to unlock the secret to fortifying your digital kingdom with 25-character passphrases. In this article, I will dive into the world of robust passwords, explore the power of 25-character passphrases, and discover how they can become your virtual fortress against malicious hackers and digital intruders. Breaking the Password Barrier: Gone are the days when simple, easy-to-guess passwords could protect your online accounts. Today, hackers are armed with sophisticated tools and techniques to crack even the most complex passwords. That’s where 25-character passphrases come to the rescue, offering a robust defense against unauthorized access. Length is the New Strength: The key to an unbreakable password lies in its length. While traditional passwords are typically around 8-12 characters, 25-character passphrases take things to a whole new level. By incorporating a combination of random words, numbers, and special characters, these passphrases create an encryption fortress that can withstand even the most determined cyberattacks. 25 Characters to Lock Down Your Data By: Carl Ladwig

Central Easy to Remember, Hard to Crack: Contrary to popular belief, longer passphrases can be easier to remember than complex passwords. Instead of a jumble of random characters, you can construct a passphrase using a string of unrelated words that have personal significance. For example, “BananaFlamingoSunsetGuitar2023!” is both memorable and highly secure. Just be sure to avoid common phrases and choose words that aren’t easily guessable. Say Goodbye to Password Reuse: One of the biggest security sins is using the same password across multiple accounts. With 25-character passphrases, you can bid farewell to this risky habit. Each passphrase can be uniquely crafted for every online account, ensuring that a breach in one account won’t compromise the rest of your digital kingdom. Defending Against Brute Force Attacks: Brute force attacks involve systematically trying every possible combination until the correct password is discovered. With 25-character passphrases, the number of possible combinations skyrockets, making it virtually impossible for hackers to crack your password through this method alone. Your digital fortress will remain impenetrable. Embracing Two-Factor Authentication: While 25-character passphrases provide an exceptional level of security, it’s always a good idea to layer on additional defenses. Two-factor authentication (2FA) adds an extra layer of protection by requiring a secondary verification method, such as a unique code sent to your mobile device. Combining 25-character passphrases with 2FA creates a formidable security shield that’s tough to breach. By harnessing the power of 25-character passphrases, you can fortify your online security and protect your valuable digital assets. Remember, length is the new strength when it comes to passwords. So, wave goodbye to weak passwords and embrace the robustness of 25-character passphrases. Safeguard your virtual kingdom, thwart malicious hackers, and enjoy the peace of mind that comes with knowing your online accounts are locked behind an impenetrable fortress of security. 10 Professional Computer Solutions Employee Feature 14,572,800 Steps Forging the Path of Development at PCS. Stride by Stride. I n the fast-paced world of technology, where innovation often outshines steadfast loyalty, the tale of two employees at Professional Computer Solutions stands as a testament to unwavering dedication and camaraderie. For over two decades, Matt Rasmussen and Justin Hoegh have contributed greatly to the development of PCS software, sharing an extraordinary bond that has not only spanned years but more than 14 million steps taken together during their daily walks. It all began more than 20 years ago when Matt and Justin started as fresh-faced graduates, eager to make their mark in the burgeoning tech industry. Matt had just graduated from Iowa State with a BS in Computer Science and was on the hunt for a position where he could apply his skills. It just so happened that a buddy who had lived on the same floor at ISU was working at PCS and got him an interview. That buddy was Brian Christensen, current PCS Application Development Manager. About two years later, Justin, a former high school classmate of Matt’s in Exira, IA, was graduating from Northwest Missouri State University with a BS in Computer Management Systems and a minor in Computer Science. He also knew Brian Christensen from American Legion Boys State and was familiar with PCS founders, Kim and Dana Ingerslev. He too was in search of a job congruent with his skill set, and the rest was history. Although both Matt and Justin’s roads of life diverged at times, eventually they merged, at 3710 Timberline Drive, Denison, IA. Throughout the years, when they weren’t working on the latest development, or troubleshooting a software glitch, they found solace in each other’s company during their breaks. Every morning and afternoon, like clockwork, they’d embark on a 3/4 mile walk around the area surrounding Professional Computer Solutions. These walks became their ritual, a way to recharge their minds and bodies, away from the glowing screens and buzzing devices. The daily walks weren’t just a means of exercise; they became a living timeline of their careers. From celebrating new product launches to navigating challenging projects, they faced it all side by side. Along the way, they amassed 14,572,800 steps, a testament to their commitment to each other and the company they love. This past July, Matt celebrated his 25th anniversary at PCS and was joined by his family and coworkers to mark the occasion. Today, as they continue their daily walks, their experiences have become cherished anecdotes, passed down to the new generations of employees. By: Blair Patnaude

Their legacy isn’t solely about techni - cal prowess but about the importance of human connections and the im - measurable value of two friends shar - ing a simple but profound ritual. So, the story of Matt and Justin con - tinues, as they traverse the path of loyalty, friendship, and accomplish - ment. 12 Professional Computer Solutions Client Feature - Kotzebue Electric Association How an Alaska Co-op Is ‘Keeping Rates Stable’ Asmall Alaskan co-op is proving that wind, solar and storage can succeed even in the frozen tundra north of the Arctic Circle. “It’s definitely challenging, but if we can do it, anybody can,” says Tom Atkinson, general manager and CEO of 843-member Kotzebue Electric Association. The co-op sits on a sandbar at the end of the Baldwin Peninsula in the Kotzebue Sound, more than 30 miles north of To read the rest of Erin’s feature article on Kotzebue Electric, click the NRECA logo thinking................... Author: Erin Kelly - NRECA the Arctic Circle in a remote place that can only be reached by plane or, during summer months, by boat. More than 70% of its members are Inupiat—indigenous Alaskans who have lived in the region for over 10,000 years. KEA’s journey to energy independence began in 1997, when it installed three 66-kilowatt wind turbines. It later added 14 more outside of Kotzebue, one of Alaska’s first wind farms. In July 2020, the co-op combined $1.9 million in federal, tribal and local government grants with $700,000 of its own capital funds to replace 532 kilowatts of those first-generation turbines with solar panels and inverters that produce an equal amount of power. KEA doubled its solar resources with a 600-kW array that came online in June, Alaska’s second largest solar farm. Solar energy is crucial to the co-op’s goal of producing 50 to 60% of its power from renewable resources—including wind and battery energy storage—in the next five years. The co-op now relies on diesel fuel to generate most of its power. While the sun—often reflecting off snow-covered ground— is strong enough to generate power from March through October, the wind blows year-round, Atkinson says. The co-op is seeking federal grants from the recently passed Inflation Reduction Act and other legislation to fund two 1-MW turbines, which combined with two existing large units, would produce about 5 million kWh of energy per year. “If we’re ever going to get funding for moving forward, this could be the time,” Atkinson says. 12 Professional Computer Solutions
