3.0-INTRODUCTION

An archive refers to a record, usually but not necessarily inactive records (non-current records) of enduring value that have been selected for
permanent preservation. Archives will normally be preserved in an archival repository. As we visit the National Archives, there are many national
archives acquired and preserved by the archival institution. There are a collection of archives including several historical magazine articles and
photographs of Malaysian legendary multi-talented artists.
Tan Sri P. Ramlee, or better known by his real name, Teuku Zakaria bin Teuku Nyak Puteh is Malaysia’s most beloved multi-talented star who
has changed over the years at the same time. Nowadays, his films and songs including Bujang Lapok (1957), Do Re Mi (1966) and so on broadcast
regularly on television, especially on Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM) and Astro, so that modern audiences will be able to enjoy his charismatic
and talented performances. Also, his songs playing on radio stations, such as Radio Klasik, may allow modern audiences to sing and dance along.
He is a singer, songwriter, actor, filmmaker, musician, screenwriter and director who still occupies a significant plane in a Malaysian life. Even
though he passed away nearly five decades ago, P. Ramlee has continued becoming increasingly popular.

P RAMLEE – SEPANJANG RIWAYATKU, 1998 Ramlee has been known since 1947. P Ramlee was born Grandmother's house at 40A
Counter Hall, Penang, Malaya which has been named as Jalan P Ramlee since 30 Aug 1983.
ACCESSION NO: He was born on the Morning of Idil Fitri on 22 March 1929 (Wednesday). His father was

Karim, he also had a step brother named Sheikh Ali Mohamad. P. Ramlee was married three
times. The first time he married Junaidah Daeng Harris was in 1950 but their marriage met
with failure in 1954. His second marriage was to Noorizan Mohd. Noor on February 6, 1955
who was the ex -wife of the Sultan of Perak, Sultan Yusuf Izzudin. However, Norizan
expected something more from their marriage but he focused more on his art career which
led to their marriage ending in 1961. The last time was with Saloma on November 21, 1961
in a very modest ceremony with his closest friends. His first wife, Junaidah, fell in love with
him when he was still not famous. Next, Norizan loved him as a well -known artist and
filmmaker. However, Saloma loves him as he is, as an artist and as an ordinary person. This

7

is what caused Saloma to be his lifelong companion until the end of his life. Ramlee had
several stepchildren, but only one is his own, Nasir, with Ramlee’s first wife.49 Ramlee’s
son, Nasir P. Ramlee, who passed away in 2008, had rerecorded new renditions of his father's
songs, as well as starred and directed sequels to his father’s films.

EARLY LIFE

Around 1926, his father, Teuku Nyah Puteh, and uncle, Rejab Hussain, FIGURE 2:

his grandmother, who had moved in after them. His uncle, Rejab 1999/0008430W
Hussain, also refurbished this property twice during the Japanese
occupation of Malaya, the first time in 1942 and the second time in 1948,
according to historical archives. His uncle did not alter the house's
original shape, despite the repairs. Since December 13, 1991, the
property has been safeguarded by the National Archives of Malaysia and
has been listed as one of Pulau Mutiara's most appealing tourist
destinations. For visitors to see, the grounds of famed star P. Ramlee's
birth house are divided into three zones. The three areas are P. Ramlee's
house, his gallery, and the auditorium.

9

P. Ramlee has always had a passion for music. His father was an Indonesian
sailor, which helped him gain recognition in the country later in his career.
Despite never having received professional music training, he dabbled with
songwriting and singing, and at the early age of 16, entered a singing competition
sponsored by Penang Radio. He finished third the next year and went on to win
second and first the following two years. In 1948, Ramlee was playing his original
song, Azizah, at a cultural fair when B. S. Rajhans, one of Singapore's first film
directors, encouraged him to join Malay Film Productions as a backing singer (an
arm of Shaw Brothers). The humble performer didn't regard himself as a star and
volunteered everywhere he could, including as an assistant camera operator on
occasion.

Early education

Ramlee received his schooling at the Sekolah Melayu Kampung Jawa

(Kampung Jawa Malay School), Francis Light English School, and

finally Penang Free School; in all, his father registered him as "Ramlee"

in school because his given name Teuku Zakaria was not appropriate

for other children at the time. Ramlee was said to be a reluctant student

who excelled in music and football. During the Japanese occupation
(1942–45), his studies at the Penang Free School were suspended, and

he enrolled in a Japanese navy school. He worked in a tin foundry and

attended a Japanese navy-run school where he learnt Japanese songs FIGURE 4:

P. Ramlee’s life became increasingly successful when Director B.S.

Rahjans noticed him at a cultural show in 1948, during which he sung his

own composition titled "Azizah," and urged him to work as a background

vocalist for the Singapore-based film studio Shaw Brothers. For the next

few weeks, he worked as a clapping boy, cameraman assistant, and

continuity man, in addition to singing. In Love, he made his acting debut

as a bad guy (1948). Over the next 18 years, he acted in, composed music

for, wrote scripts for, and eventually directed dozens of Malay films for

CHAPTER 3 :
EARLY CAREER

14

Chapter 3: Early Career
1945–1949: Early involvement

When he saw his friends playing music in his village, he became interested in music. He began collecting
people's wages in order to purchase a violin. He was the commander of a battalion of 150 men while attending
the Japanese Navy School. He was frequently invited to sing a few songs at stage events conducted every
night of the week. He was able to master the Japanese language in a short period of time because to the
Japanese educational system. The Japanese had dispatched him to several locations in order to perfect his
skills.

Figure 6: He rehearsed playing music with the Sinaran Bintang Sore band after conducting the evening prayers. He
then became a violinist, singer, and lyricist with the Village Youth Orchestra. Mr. Kamaruddin has recognised
P. Ramlee in the 1960s. his skill and now teaches piano at his house. Encik Kamaruddin's daughter, Normah, brought a cup of coffee

as encouragement because she couldn't concentrate properly during the teaching session.

He began his career by competing in a singing competition sponsored by Radio Malaya in the north. In 1945, he was ranked third, and the
following year, he was ranked third. In 1947, he was named Malaya's Lead Singer for the first time. Many people in the north have heard of him
and the Village Youth Orchestra since then. Penang hosted a performance by the Asmara Appeal Group, which consists of aristocratic theatre
players. Despite the fact that he didn't have any money at the moment, he planned to attend the show. Her earnings from festivities and theatrical
acts were used to purchase clothing. He used to have to put on a torn shirt and cover it with a piece of coat on the outside once upon a time.

Finally, he attempted to scale the barrier in order to witness a performance by Rayuan Asmara. Kasma Booty joined the group as a singer
but is not yet well-known as a film actress. Ahmad C.B. had spoken with the Village Youth Orchestra's director and advised that they join the
Asmara Appeal organisation. P. Ramlee met Kasma Booty for the first time at an event that was the outcome of a collaboration between the two

15

groups. P. Ramlee also met Jaafar, a saxophonist who is Kasma Booty's stepfather. He didn't see Kasmy Booty for a while because the Asmara
Appeal group was always on the move holding shows.

While playing at a keroncong show in Penang in 1948, B.S. Rajhans, a Shaw Brothers director, saw Ramlee's potential. Rajhans then
persuaded Ramlee to join Malay Film Productions (MFP) as a background singer a year later, in 1949. Ramlee refused to budge and left with his
violin for Singapore. He sang the first song of her creation, "Azizah," at the audition conducted at the studio in Jalan Ampas. Penarek Becha, his
directorial debut, featured the song as the background music (1955).

P.Ramlee made his acting debut in Chinta (1948), in which he portrayed a villain and sang in the background. His popularity grew, and he
appeared in and supplied his voice to films like Nasib (1949) and Nilam (1949), before landing lead roles in Bakti (1950) and Takdir Ilahi (1951).
(1950). Ramlee's success as an actor grew, but he also began a musical career. Ramlee's lovely voice earned him a recording contract with Hemsley
& Co. Hemsley made a tidy profit on "Azizah," paying Ramlee $ 3,000 for his tunes. Ramlee also performed with the HMV Orchestra (His Master's
Voice) for Radio Malaya, which was broadcast on the Cathay Building, under the direction of music director Yusoff B.
1950–1957: Early success and peak of popularity

Ramlee's cinematic career took off with the premiere of Divine Destiny. He left MFP after the studio refused to fulfil his request for a
salary rise, according to a close acquaintance at the time, and plans to join another film firm, Nusantara Productions, fell through. The Maria
Hertogh riots in December 1950 prompted Ramlee to temporarily relocate to Johor Bahru on the Malay peninsula. After that, Ramlee rejoined
MFP to star in the picture Life, which was released in late May 1951, thanks to his close friend and MFP's first Malay director, A. Mahadi.

After rejoining MFP, Ramlee starred in a string of studio-produced films, including Sejoli (1951), Juwita (1951), Between Smiles and
Crying (1952), Hot Rain (1953), and Call of the Island (1954), before achieving his first major success as a director. Ramlee's debut film, Penarek
Becha, was released in 1955, and he also featured in it alongside Saadiah. The film was critically acclaimed and garnered prizes for best Malay

16

picture, best director, best song (for "Inang Baru"), and best actor in 1956 from the entertainment magazine Film and Sports Magazine. His
directorial work went on to win a slew of accolades at the Asian Film Festival.

Ramlee featured alongside Saadiah and Ahmad Mahmud in the film Hang Tuah, directed by Indian film director Phani Majmudar and
based on the mythical narrative of Hang Tuah. It was the first Malay film to be shot in the Eastmancolor colour format, and it premiered on January
28, 1956. He also collaborated with Majmudar on the film Anak-ku Sazali, in which he portrayed two characters: Hassan, a loving father, and
Sazali, a wayward son. He won the Best Actor prize at the fourth Asian Picture Festival in Tokyo, Japan, for this film.

1958–1973: Continuity of success

In 1958, he starred alongside Ramlee in the military film Sergeant Hassan, in which he portrayed the title role. The film was originally set
to be directed by Filipino filmmaker Lamberto Avellana, but Avellana dropped out, and Ramlee took over. Jins Shamsuddin, Salleh Kamil, and
Saadiah also star. Two years later, he wrote, directed, and performed in the film Antara Dua Darjat (1960), which chronicles the narrative of
Ghazali's (Ramlee) and Tengku Zaleha's (Saadiah) romantic engagement, which was met with hostility from Tengku Zaleha's family due to
concerns about rank. S. Kadarisman, Yusof Latiff, Ahmad Nisfu, and Kuswadinata are among the cast members. Ramlee directed theatre works
such as Sultan Mahmood Mangkat Di Julang (1959), Kachip Mas (1961), and Damaq (1952) at Happy World and New World, as well as the
Victoria Theater.

Ramlee is also known for his comedic work, as evidenced by the fact that he directed the Bujang Lapok film series, in which he co-starred
with S. Shamsuddin and Aziz Sattar and which became his favourite comedy picture owing to its social awareness topic. Bujang Lapok's success
spawned three sequels: Ali Baba Bujang Lapok, Pendekar Bujang Lapok, and Seniman Bujang Lapok. In 1962, he was motivated by his happiness
with Saloma to make the film Ibu Mertua-ku, in which he also authored the storyline and starred as Kassim Slamat. The film was not simply a
commercial triumph; its theme song, "Di Mana Kan Ku Cari Ganti," even outperformed the film. Ramlee also showcases his saxophone blowing
skills in the film. My mother-in-law took home the prize for Most Versatile Actor, which was first presented at the 10th Asian Film Festival in

17

Tokyo, Japan. A year later, he and his wife had a cameo appearance in Lin Dai and Peter Chen Ho's Hong Kong film Love Parade. In 1964, he
directed, wrote, and performed in two films: Madu Tiga and Tiga Abdul (co-written with S. Kadarisman), which was his final picture with Shaw
Brothers before going to Kuala Lumpur's Studio Merdeka (owned by Ho Ah Loke and HM Shah) in April of that year. When the Shaw family
bought a major part in Studio Merdeka, they did not end their association with P. Ramlee. Sitora Harimau Jadian was his debut picture with Studio
Merdeka, and he also created the storey and acted in it. Ramlee attempted to incorporate special effects in the picture, but due to a limited budget
and lack of help, he had to do a variety of jobs, including editing. The Shaw brothers appeared after 15 minutes during a screening of the film in
Singapore, which was attended by actors Ahmad Daud and Saadiah. It became the only Malay film to be taken from the market.

Until 1972, Ramlee directed 18 more films for Studio Merdeka, including Masam-Masam Manis and the Do Re Mi film series. Malay Film
Productions ceased operations in 1967, following the failure of the last three films following the departure of P. Ramlee. When the Ramlee-
sponsored recording firm EMI's contract expired a year later, the company decided not to renew it. Ramlee was taken aback by this, but he
determined that he would no longer collaborate with EMI under any circumstances. His final film with Studio Merdeka was Lakmana Do Re Mi
(1972), and his final song and lyrics were "Tears in Kuala Lumpur," sung by his wife, Puan Sri Saloma, following his death. Ramlee featured in
two television drama series scripted by Abdullah Hussain near the conclusion of his career, Intan (1971) and Rantau Selamat (1972). The Malaysian
Film Company, or PERFIMA, was founded by Ramlee, H.M. Shah, and three others with the goal of developing the country's film industry.
However, due to differences of opinion with the leadership, Ramlee and H.M. Shah were fired from PERFIMA in late February 1973. Ramlee
planned to start his own film company to compete with the Shaw Brothers one day before he died.

Chapter 4: Retirement

Ramlee died of a heart attack before dawn on May 29, 1973, at the age of 44, and was buried in Kuala Lumpur's Jalan Ampang Muslim
Cemetery. The legendary performer died of a heart attack at the age of 44.

The P. Ramlee Memorial or Pustaka Peringatan P. Ramlee was established in

his home in Setapak, Kuala Lumpur, 13 years after his death, in honour of his

contributions to the Malaysian entertainment industry. In 1982, the central Kuala

Lumpur roadway Jalan Parry was renamed Jalan P. Ramlee in his honour. The

Malaysian honorary title Tan Sri was bestowed on him posthumously in 1990, while

the Sarawak State Government bestowed the honorific title "Datuk Amar" on him in

2009. Abdul Taib Mahmud, the then-Chief Minister of Sarawak and a longtime

supporter of Ramlee, presented the prize to his adopted daughter, Dian P. Ramlee, at

a Kuching ceremony honouring veteran artists. The P. Ramlee House is a museum in

Penang, Malaysia, located on Jalan P. Ramlee (originally Caunter Hall Road). The

structure is a rebuilt wooden house that was built by his father and uncle in 1926. P.

Ramlee was honoured by Google with a Doodle on the Malaysian Google homepage

on March 22, 2017, his 88th birthday. In 2021, Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC)
