Welcome to the 2018/19 Learning & Development Service (L&D) Prospectus for Dorset HealthCare (DHC).
In this prospectus you will find the learning activities that are planned for 2018/19. The L&D Service updates this prospectus regularly to keep you informed of new dates, new learning opportunities and any changes to existing learning provision.
The Trust is committed to learning as a way of being Better Every Day. To this end, we provide targeted learning & development opportunities to staff to enable and support you in developing the right knowledge and skills at the right time to successfully meet the demands of your role, needs of patients / carers and to continue to make a positive contribution both now and in the future.

For each learning activity, you will be able to identify who it is suitable for, together with brief details of what you can expect to have achieved following completion of the learning activity. Course Applications:
Allstaffshouldensuretheyhaveattendedtheappropriatemandatorytraining/refreshertrainingfor theirrole,priortoapplying to attend non mandatory training. To apply for a learning and development opportunity, you must first gain the agreement of your line manager before booking a place. Alternatively, managers can email a learning request for a staff member to the appropriate course contact / book them on via the Online Booking System.

Unless otherwise stated, all learning and development opportunities in this prospectus are free to DHC staff and external staff working within the Trust’s integrated teams, e.g. social workers. The fee for external applicants is stated in the details of each learning activity listed in this prospectus.

BASIC LIFE SUPPORT
Target Group:
 All staff who come into contact with service users.
 All clinical Mental Health inpatient staff receives this training as part of the Physical
Intervention initial and update training.
 All other clinical staff should access this training as a session within their area’s
respective modular Mandatory training session.
Please note that this is not a pre-requisite for staff attending Immediate Life Support Training (ILS).
Repeat:
Annual.
Cost for External Delegates:
One day - £130; Half a day - £70; One hour - £20 per person.
Learning Outcomes:

 Assess the unconscious patient
 Give effective mouth-to-mouth ventilation and chest compressions

Target Group:
All staff working in a clinical team.

Learning Outcomes:
The course meets National syllabus requirements set by the NHS Security Management Service and is completed online via eHub.
By the end of the eLearning delegates will be able to:

FIRE SAFETY – FIRE MARSHALL/FIRE WARDEN
Duration:
2 hours.

All training will be delivered locally in the normal place of work (site specific).
Frequency:
Annually.
Prerequisite:
All delegates should have completed the Trust’s mandatory training for fire.

MOVING AND HANDLING LINK STAFF INITIAL TRAINING
Target Group:
Moving & Handling Link Staff only.

 To provide local induction for new staff on equipment specific to their area
 To provide local training on equipment specific to their clinical area i.e. Hoists, slings etc.

THE SAFE CARING INTERVENTIONS OF THE OLDER PERSONS
Target Group:
Community Hospital Registered and Non-Registered Nursing Staff.
Aims:
This course aims to:
 Help prepare staff working with patients suffering with Dementia to recognise early warning
signs/symptoms of agitation/frustration and gain more understanding of how to prevent escalation of agittation/frustration which may lead to violence and/or agression. Utilizing good communication tailored to a Dementia sufferer

 HealthCare staff will learn safe hold techniques as a last resort for when they need to deliver

DOMESTIC ABUSE: AWARENESS TRAINING
Target Group:
This course is suitable for all public sector and voluntary sector employees, particularly those who are working directly with client groups likely to be affected by these issues.
Cost for External Delegates:
£50 charge for statutory agencies and a subsidised cost of £40 for voluntary sector agencies. Lunch and refreshments are provided. The course fee includes a free place on the half-day MARAC course. Please note that a separate booking is required for the MARAC training. In the event of cancellation, a fee of £25 will be payable, if less than 72 hours’ notice is received by Safer Poole Partnership.

DOMESTIC ABUSE: MARAC & RISK ASSESSMENT LEVEL 2
Target Group:
Health Professionals who come into contact with children & who make referrals to the MARAC process.
Cost for External Delegates:

DYSPHAGIA TRAINING
Target Group:
Professionally qualified nurses, District Nurses, AHPs, Health Care Assistants, Rehabilitation Assistants, Catering/Kitchen Staff
Cost for External Delegates:

Entry Requirements:
Belonging to the target group and working with clients who have, or may develop, feeding/swallowing difficulties (dysphagia)
Learning Outcomes:
To enable participants to develop their understanding of:
 The normal swallow and what can go wrong
 Signs and symptoms of swallowing difficulties
 Who and how to refer to Speech & Language Therapy
 Modified diets and thickening drinks
 The importance of oral hygiene
 Supporting patients with dysphagia

EFFECTIVE RECORD WRITING AND RECORD KEEPING
Target Group:

Aim:
Enhance clinical skills by having a sound knowledge of good record writing and to demonstrate best practice.
Objectives:
 To be aware and have an understanding of National and local policies associated with record keeping.

 Appreciate the importance of confidentiality in relation to personal and sensitive
information and understanding the underpinning principles.

 Demonstrate awareness of key legislation that provides a framework for protocols and codes of practice in handling sensitive data.

FALLS – PREVENTION & MANAGEMENT
Target Group:
Required training for all registered staff working within Older Person’s Mental Health Inpatient Services.

Learning Outcomes:
This is a workbook which has been designed as a self-study programme. It aims to raise the awareness and understanding of falls and assist you in being able to apply this knowledge to help reduce the risk of falls within your work area. It will act as a revision tool for staff in service user settings, although it can also be helpful for people who work in the community.
On completion of the workbook you will:
 Be able to demonstrate an understanding of why falls occur and the consequences of
falls
 Be able to identify physical factors behind the reasons why people fall
 Have worked through several case studies where you will have to think about safety issues in the environment, not just for people who have fallen, but also as a preventative tool
 Identify risks and know how to report repairs in your area
 Have considered Risk Assessments and how these are communicated between
teams
