FOREWORD

The Direct Lighting and Battery Charging instru-
ments described and illustrated in this pamphlet are
designed to meet every ordinary requirement of elec-
tric lighting encountered on the leading makes of
motorcycles now in vogue. To meet unusual condi-
tions we are prepared to design and build special
apparatus, but it is believed that the standard con-
struction herein shown will be found with slight
modifications suitable for nearly all motorcycles.

DIRECT lIGHTING

The Direct Lighting Model (B-4) is an instru-
ment used without a battery furnishing current direct-
ly to the headlamps. The current is governed and
stabilized so that fluctuations in speed are not discern-
able. This model is geared so that maximum light is
obtained at 12 miles per hour. The capacity of this
instrument is 4 amperes.

BATTERY CHARGING

The Battery Charging Model (C-4) is an instru-
ment to be used with a battery floating on the line.
The current is con trolled wi thin limits as in the (B-4)
model and will operate without a battery in emerg-
ency. The capacity of this instrument is 4 amperes.

COMMUTATOR. Commutator requires no attention, will attain a gloss and remain

BRUSHES. Best self-lubricating high current capacity brushes are used. They are
provided with pigtails and are easily replaced without dismantling gerierator. These
features cut down brush contact losses to a minimum.

CURRENT GOVERNOR. Current maintained constant by a centrifugal governor
pulley. Governor consists of a balanced weighted togel mechanism which is
counteracted by a heavy spiral spring. This action presses a copper disc with
a convex friction surface with varying tension, against a disc of ~ray brake lining,
which is notched to prevent cutting. Surfaces attain a high polish. There is no
wearing away of materials. Unaffected by heat, moisture or weather. Driving pulley
gisromovoeu.nted on an annular baIl~bearing. It is 2;/g inches in diameter cut with a 28°

DRIVE. Drive is by means of a belt, preferably a light single-ply leather belt beveled
28', same as the pulley. Belt does not slip on the pulleys and the belt need not be
run tigllt in order to pull properly.

ATTACHMENT. A. B. C. equipment is made attachable for whatever models of
motorcycles equipnlent is intended. Special machining is not necessary.

MODEL B-4 IS DESiRABLE (No battery troubles).
Where standing lamps are not required.
Where the rider does not ride slower than 12 M. P. H.
Where excellent and reliable service is desired at a reasonable and low first cost.

These models are furnished without pulley and cut-out if desired. The specifica-
tions are the same as in Model B-4, with the addition of the cut-out. This cut-out is
mechanically op€rated. It saves extra wiring and delicate magnetic mechanism. On
account of its simplicity it is easily understood.

UNIFORM CHARGING CURRENT. Generator delivers a uniform charging cunent
to the storage battery at all speeds.

FIELD MAGNET EXCITATION. Self-excited shunt winding.
LOAD CAPACITY. Maximum 4 amperes. The current can be regulated over a range
"I of from 2 to 4 amperes.

AUTOMATIC MECHANICAL CUT-IN SWITCH. Switch is incorporated in and.
controlled by the rotation of the armature shaft. Switch automatically disconnects
the charging current at the desired minimum R. P. M.; easily adjusted. This is not a
delicate contact device, but is rugged and substantial with plenty of pressure to oper-
ate it. The switch consists of an insulated contact disc which closes by pressure
against 2 semi-circular contact poles. The switch parts are stationary. The oper-
ating pressure is transmitted against a ball-bearing by a small sliding shaft with
hardened end, which rotates with the armature. This sliding movement is obtained
by the centrifugal pressure of the current governor. The switch has a cover which
protects it from the elements. By its removal the switch action can be observed
and adjusted. There are no wearing parts. The adjustment is permanent.

A REDEEMING FEATURE. Has a reserve energy which allows a rider to start run-
ning with a battery that is totally discharged and build it up on his motorcycle.
While the generator is running the voltage is constant and up to standard even
though the battery is nearly discharged.

EMERGENCY. Will operate successfully as a complete unit without the battery .. Dis-

BATTERY. C-4 generator will take care of any make of battery with a charging rate
of from I to 40 amperes.

Standard A. B. C. Motorcycle generators are built in two models,
one for charging batteries, type C-4, and the other for direct non-battery
lighting, type B-4. Both of these types are equally reliable, each built
for a specific purpose. The late models are wonderful little generators.
