Demolish State For the second time in as many years, the Panthers finished the season by knocking off Wayne State 60 to 19. The Panthers rolled to a new single game total offensive rec·· ord with 545 yards in the Wayne State affair. (lower right) Against Central Michigan, in a game the Panthers should never have lost. Eastern set I lAC records for most rushing plays in one game with 99. On defense the Panthers were led by co-captain and defensive end Bob Jensen and by co-captain line-backer John Allison . Paul Fjell and Allison tied for the team leadership in tackles behind the line of scrimmage with 9 each. (right) Jensen recovered four fumbles, leading the team in that department. C. J. Whaley led the team with four interceptions . Allison and Steve Tattum had two each , while Jack Terndrup and Pat Cassidy each picked off an enemy aerial. 240

Gridders Gain Great Glory There were many highlights in Eastern football during 1968. The near upset of Fairmont State had to be one of the finest efforts of all time for Panther teams (opposite page, bottom). Then there was the unbelievable finish against Wayne State in which the Panthers scored 60 points (below). It will be a long time before anyone forgets the sparkling performance turned in by Joe Davis this year at quarterback. No, the Panthers may not have been able to put it all together this year, but with the guiding light of coach Clyde Biggers and his staff, and with a few good breaks along the way, the Panthers should have a great future. 1968 was only an indication of things to come. Progress is the name of the game. 242

244 Harriers Regain IIAC Title The Panther Harriers gave Eastern its second straight IIAC cross country title this year as Coach Maynard "Pat" O'Brien's distancemen went undefeated in conference action and were 9-1 in dual competition. In addition to winning the conference title, the Harriers placed second in the State of Illinois Meet, were fifth in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Meet and were second in the National Collegiate Athletic Association Meet. Larry Mayse (far left) was named All-American for 1968 while Marty Mcintyre received Phi Sigma Epsilon's "Outstanding Eastern Fall Athlete" award. In addition Mcintyre was elected captain for 1969 along with Dike Stirrett. The only team the runners lost to was the University of Illinois, while the Panthers defeated such schools as Southeast Missouri, Indiana State, (opposite page) Loyola of Chicago and Bradley University in dual meets. The only senior on the 1968 unit was Captain Virgil Hooe, while freshmen Jim Guess, Jim Hackbarth, and Tom Halloran along with sophomores Ken Klipp and Pete Tschaepe and juniors Mcintyre, Mayse, Stirrett and Jim Fehrenbacher were consistent high finishers for O'Brien and Assistant Coach Tom Woodall.

Booters: Team of Character It could have been a great year, and it could have been a disasterous year. In the end, however, it was just an in between year. Eastern's boaters looked great in the early part of the season, horrible in the middle of the season, and finished as strong as any team could hope to finish. After defeating Greenville, and the Springfield YMCA, the roof fell in on the Panthers. Playing one of the most difficult schedules in the area, the Panthers dropped their next five games. Against Quincy, one of the leading soccer teams in the nation, the Panthers played a fine game but fell short and tired in the second half to lose, 4 to 0. The Panthers lost a heartbreaker to SIU Edwardsville, 3 to 2, were defeated 1 to 0 at the hands of Chicago Circle, and were a lso set 246 back by Indiana, 4 to 1 . The Panthers concluded their five game losing streak by dropping a decis ion to Ottawa (Kansas), 3 to 1. But this year's soccer team was one of character. With their backs to the w all, and having been robbed of some valuable p layers through injuries, the Boaters put it a ll together a n d closed the season by winning their last four games. They defeated Washington University, 3 to 0 , Western Illinois, 10 to 0, Lewis College, 2 to 0, and wound up the season c lipping Ball State 3 to 2. The Panthers c losed the season with a record of 6 and 5 . After their m id-season slump, the P a nthers made great progress. T h ey look forward to an even mor e succ essful season next yea r. -

248 Runts Share IIAC Title The "Runnin' Runts" were the rage at Eastern this year, winning a share of the IIAC title and finishing w ith a season record of 13-13. First-year Coach Don R. Eddy (opposite page, top) and Assistant Coach C. W . "Bud" Scott provided Panther fans with one of the most exciting squads in recent years. Nicknamed the " Runnin' Runts" by a group of students prior to the beginning of the season, Eddy's club averaged a fraction above six-feet in height. Highlights of the campaign were the Illinois State games, Eastern's road victory over Central Michigan and the IIAC tournament. Eastern won a crucial contest from Illinois State in league play after losing to the Redbirds in the finals of the IIAC Tournament. At Central Michigan the "Runts" needed a victory to assure themselves of a tie for the IIAC crown and got it, bec oming only the third team in four years to beat the Chips at home. Senior forward Greg Beenders became the second-leading scorer in Eastern history in a s ingle season with 553 points during the year, a 21.2 average. Beenders (lower left) also broke a number of Eastern, IIAC and Lantz Building records in the process, setting an a ll-time free throw percentage record for a career (.786). Beenders was also the leading scorer in the IIAC, averaging 19.5 points per contest with a total of 11 7 points in the six league games. His efforts this year earned him the " Most Valuable Player" vote from his teammates.

250 Runts Rout Redbirds Before 5,000 fans in Lantz Gym, the "Runnin' Runts" romped to an 86-67 win over Illinois State the first of February. Illinois State had previously beaten the Panthers nine straight games but the Runts, stealing the ball ten times, outscored the Redbirds as they hit .571 from the field and .789 from the foul line. Tom Ferriell (left) played probably his Jinest game of the campaign as he tallied 23 points, and Greg Beenders (far left) grabbed ten rebounds for the Panthers. Bob Herdes paced the scoring with 25 points, hitting nine of 12 from the field and seven of nine at the line. Randy Coonce, called "the most exciting player in the league even when he does not score a point," registered seven assists and did a masterful job on defense.

Led by most valuable player John Burns, the Panthers fielded an impressive team. Arnie Drzonek was named the field captain, and Dan Lathrop (opposite page, lower left) was named honorary captain. Lathrop was the recipient of the IIAC Scholastic Award and the Richard G. Browne Award. John Burns (opposite page, lower right) led the regulars last year with a .438 average and led the team in all hitting categories. Record Number Intramural statistics indicate that EIU students prefer ath letic competition to campus protest marches and sit-ins. During t he fall quarter a record number of teams engaged in flag football and soccer and new marks were established in individual sports. In Cross Country Walter C rawford , Taylor North, set a new school intra mural record in the two-mile run. Phi Sigma Epsilon emerged as champion in both flag football (above ) and soccer, winning the footba ll crown with a 2 0 -6 victory over Tau Kappa Epsilon, and scoring a hard-fought 3 -2 win over Taylor South in soccer. The intramural trophy cases in the L a ntz Building quickly emptied as the victorious teams competing in the winter sports received the ir a wards . Pro udest of all w in - ners w a s Sigma Pi fraternity which won t he university playoffs in basketball . Phi S ig m a Epsilon accomplished an outstand ing feat in intramural competit io n by copping t h eir fifth team champion ship in the 14 f a ll and winter sports by winning laure l s in both v olleyba ll and w restling .
