Will you ever forgive me? For all of you who are looking fo r your pictures, they lie somewhere in that mass of nose after nose. Some lines from Richard Kipling's, "If," describe the thoughts of many on the Warbler staff during th.e year and especially before deadlines. "If you keep your head when all about you are losing theirs ... If you can wait and not be tired by waiting ... If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster And treat those two impostors just the same, ... " These things are a part of all on the staff. I hope you will all remember your friends as they are in these pages. /?-- Susan Kaiser, Classes editor Specifications for Warbler 197 8 The 1978 Warbler was produced by the students of Eastern Illinois University and printed by Intercollegiate Press of Shawnee Mission, Kansas. The book was again this year a "camera-ready" style production by the students on the Warbler staff and civil service personnel. The copy for each page, redouts, headlines, cutlines, artwork and pictures were completed on campus and pasted up in page form for Intercollegiate to make plates and print. The book is divided into 10 sections, bound in 16-page signatures, Smythsewn and rounded with a headband. The paper used is 70 pound enamel stock with a 9-by-12 page size. There were 6100 books printed each containing 336 pages. The cover is a three dimensional embossing with one applied color. Die cuts and artwork design were compfeted in the art department at Intercollegiate from photographs submitted by the Warbler photography staff of a campus scene superimposed in the cupped hands. The endsheets are printed on liner vellum in flag blue. The headline style used was Serif Gothic; the body type was Oracle 10; and the cutline type was Helios 7. Stevens Studios of Bangor, Maine was the photo studio for class pictures and the W arbler photography staff produced the groups pictures. *The opinions expressed on these pages are not necessarily those of the administration, faculty or student body of Eastern Illinois University.

Managing editor Sora Knopp describes liaison duties Warbler 1978 is finally ready to paste up its last pages, and all I can say is tnank God. Those of you who are not well acquainted with yearbook deadlines may be surprised to learn that it is only the first week of February and we are already quietly tucking the yearbook in bed. Well, that's not quite accurate. Actually we are making a mad dash to get the last pages of the yearbook set, pasted and shipped to Kes and the gang in Kansas City before the final deadline passes us by. Serving my post as managing editor, I have assumed the responsibility of being the liaison between the section editors and Warbler editor-in-chief (WEIC) Leesa Willis. As a result, I have spent more time working with members of the Warbler staff than the other editors. I have learned of many of the idiosyncracies of the staff editors, and they have undoubtedly become aware of a few of my strange habits. To begin my list of credits and thanks, I would like to extend a special note of appreciation to the Warbler's graduating seniors: -Leesa, are you sure you wouldn't like to stick around another year as reigning WEIC at the old Wublah ranch? -JJRjrJuanjoseAquilaMadDog Rearden, where can we find another so well versed in the lexicon? I will miss your subhuman sense of humor. And then there are our section editors, all of whom are new recruits to the yearbook staff this year: -Kathy Klisares, sports editor, who would indicate her frustration by lighting up a Swisher Sweet. It may be too late, but I think we've finally got it all together. -Marcia Lawrence, who quickly caught on to lifestyle at Eastern. -Greg Moore, who assumed his duties as a freshman knowing little about the academics section for which he was responsible and who probably came out even more confused . -Susan Kaiser, who became a pro at conning friends and dates into doing indexing. -Lorrain T riest, group section editor and staff photographer, who completed her job in a short two months. Those first deadlines now seem so long ago. The photography staff, Bobby McElwee, Eric Herzog, Jim O'Dell and the rest of the crew, deserve commendation. These people spent countless hours in the darkroom as deadlines lingered close by. Hey Bobby, can you get me one more print? I think the Eastern News has negatives. Finally, there's our art editor Jo Sheeran, whose comments you see below. Jo provided all the artwork seen in this book, usually on very short notice. And Kim Davis, our ad manager, discovered how hard selling just one page of advertising can be. Throw in a couple dozen writers, and you have the Warbler 1978 staff. A big thanks goes to Shirley Nolan, Mary Chromek, Mary Smerdon and Nora Wofford (not to mention Lori and Norm) for typesetting and helping paste up the yearbook . 314 Another year has come and gone for the Warbler and I find myself faced with the writing of editor's notes. A journalism major should have witty editor's notes, but as was the case last year I will just mention the people who deserve my thanks. -Eric Herzog-My assistant photo editor who proved himself as a group shot and concert photographer, as well as an improving darkroom technician. Eric will be here next year and will be one of the Warbler's most valuable assets. -Lorrain Triest-The organized lady photographer who handled group shots, and worked as a Warbler staff photographer for the third year. I would like to thank Lorrain for her devotion as a staff member and for her friendship. Adrienne Zuckerman, Bob Nussbaum and Jim O'Dell also deserve thanks for their help in the production of this year's book. The Warbler staff produced all photographs in the book, including all of the color work. Group shots were also taken and printed by the Warbler staff this year, whereas in the past they were taken by the studio that contracted for the senior and undergraduate pictures. The idea of putting the image of Old Main inside the hands was mine, but the artists and die-cutters at Intercollegiate deserve praise since they did the rest of the work from my photograph. Since many of you are typically questioning our theme or simply baffled by it, let me attempt to explain. We wanted to go with a less concrete theme this year, so we followed up 1977's computer age with 1978's "first looks." Still clear as mud? Let me try again. We represented Eastern in 1978 as we believed a newcoming student might perceive it. Thus, the pictures in the introduction denoted subjects that might first be observed, and the lead stories into each section were the most important items, as we saw it, involved in that section for the year. The last half of the book is reserved for a "last looks" effect. The mug and group shots were theorized to provide a last look at those who made the first look possible. The book's divisions are similar to last year's, with a few changes to make it less difficult to categorize certain activities. Thanx go to many who not only supported me this final year, but also the three following groups. To my relatives and closest friends, I hope I wasn't as distant this year as last. To Karen, Mel and Jeane, who always had a pat on the back, words of encouragement and much, much more. The spacious Warbler office was rearranged this year, so I gaze into the bleak journalism classroom hallway instead of the awesomely beautiful Student Services parking lot as I pay my last respects. Also, these editor's notes are brought to you four days prior to our last deadline rather than four days after our final deadline as they were in 1977. To my staff .. .Sara, who I am sure has grown tired of taking my orders and offering advice. Thanx for accepting double duty this year as a section editor and managing editor. Words can't express my gratitude ... john, for accepting the tasks of section and news editing, and redecorating my bulletin board with " Rearden's Rot." ... Bobby, for excellence in photography repeated and the joy I had knowing that my desk would always be the second messiest in the office ... Kathy, Marcia, )o Anne and Kim, the rookies. Thanx for the terrific work you produced .. .Susan and Greg, also rookies, for accepting midseason assignments ... and Bob "Subhuman" Reed, looks like you're suffering from the lost identity syndrome. To the disappointment of many and the glee of less than the number I could count on the fingers of one hand, I did return to edit the 1978 Warbler. To those of you who wish to seek revenge, see DAVID REED. He is solely responsible. In order to publish the Warbler within the allotted budget, it was produced camera-ready style again this year. Copy, headlines, cutlines and redouts were again pasted down before mailing, but there was much less work involved on the part of the staff members this year. With the aid of civil service personnel, new machinery and the watchful eye of our new adviser, production of Warbler 1978 went much smoother than its immediate forerunner. For everything I have learned and experienced, I thank everyone and everything that is a part of me and Eastern. Without a doubt, Leesa Willis Warbler editor John Rearden rehashes experiences as news editor Certain sounds tend to be associated with working on a yearbook. The clack of rulers being used to draw layouts, the thud of pictures being stamped, etc. One of those noises is the sound of · paper being crumpled as people try to write their editor's notes. Probably more work goes into this substantially unread portion of the yearbook than any other piece of writing. But, a lot of work goes into other sections of the yearbook. Of course, the staff's appreciation of the material contained herein is diminished by the fact that we have seen every picture and read every bit of copy. As a matter of fact, every bit of writing in this book has been read about five times and usually changed and rearranged each time. Usually, it is read and changed by one person who is followed by someone who changes it back to the way It was before. Some of you will probably be disappointed to find yourself not pictured here, to find yourself not mentioned here and to find no group of which you are a member covered. We are disappointed, too. However, there are quite a few small groups on this campus who meet, do things, tell no one and expect the press to find out. That is not realistic. Some of you will be complaining that your senior or underclassmen pictures were (a) bad (b) sent to a Guatemalan leper colony instead of your campus address (c) too expensive or (d) focused on your face instead of some other feature of your anatomy which you considered more characteristic. We sympathize with your difficulties because we have to deal with the same photo studio that you do and they screw things up for us sometimes, too. Nevertheless, despite all the complaints and inconveniences, there are certain satisfactions involved. just getting finished 1s a significant achievement and one which sometimes seems to make the rest of the work worthwhile. Working with interesting and interested people tends to be its own reward, perhaps making up for the people who fail to do what they say, fail to say what they will do and fail to care. For those of you who are tired of reading my tedious editor's notes, these will be the last. 315

Eastern maintained its excellent all-around sports program in 197 7-7 8 with standout teams in wrestling, cross-country, soccer and badminton merely exam pies of the school's overall quality. 325

326 Sports often attracts people more by its ritual qualities and ceremonies than by the coordination and effort involved . The Pinl~ Panthers and EIU bond continued to odd that element of ceremony to Eastern's major sports.

If all other means for amusing oneself foiled, there was always the lost, desperate gambit of studying. Some students employed this lost-ditch means of staving off boredom more frequently than others, but everyone was forced into it on occasion. 335

336 Like the rest of Eastern, the Warbler staff had its share of new things: people, machines and ideas. Freshmen were broken in (some of them would probably describe it as bro ~en), the new copy setting equipment was employed and the Warbler rearranged itself organizationally and in format.
