LET’S BUILD A BRAIN! STRESS AND ITS EFFECTS ON THE DEVELOPING BRAIN CHERI BURCHAM THURSDAY NOVEMBER 30, 2023 5:30 - 6:30 PM MATTOON PUBLIC LIBRARY COMMUNITY ROOM 1600 CHARLESTON AVENUE MATTOON, IL 61938 • FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC • REGISTER BY NOVEMBER 23, 2023 • PARTICIPANT LIMIT: 25 Chronic, long-term stress and trauma can damage a child’s developing brain. Children with no predictability or consistency will be in a constant state of heightened stress. The same is true for children without secure attachments, or children who live in an unsafe physical environment. When stress is chronic and severe, it can have profound negative effects on brain development. Protecting children from toxic stress is an important way adults can support healthy brain development. Children who have adequate support are resilient under toxic stress and have learned that they have power to thrive, even under extremely negative conditions. Participants in this workshop will play the Brain Architecture Game, which is a tabletop game experience that builds understanding of the powerful role of experiences on early brain development. The game helps people appreciate the impact of early childhood experiences on outcomes across the lifespan. This workshop is especially helpful for parents, grandparents, childcare providers, and anyone else who has children in their care. GO.EIU.EDU/BRAIN FALL 2023 COMMUNITY PROGRAM GUIDE | 20

Abilene is a collective of artists whose cinematic compositions marry classical and modern elements with an emphasis on narrative storytelling. Abilene’s sound is shaped by the influences of great composers, authors, spirited conversation, and copious amounts of coffee. Their artistry is driven by the belief that music should serve, inspire, and elevate the soul. Through experience they have discovered that the use of electronics, percussion, household items, and singing on top of traditional textures is engaging, timely and allows for imaginative narrative through our compositions. FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 22, 2023 - JANUARY 27, 2024 TARBLE ARTS CENTER 2010 9TH STREET CHARLESTON, IL 61920 • FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC Who Speaks for the Oceans? proposes new and challenging ways to shift our understandings of and relationships to whales and other nonhuman animals. Through interdisciplinary artworks in video, installation, painting, tapestry, music, performance, and more, the exhibition analyzes epistemological and historical knowledge built around what we think we know about life in the ocean through the charismatic “whale song.” As we approach a crucial moment concerning the condition of our planet, listening to whale vocalizations and other marine creatures can bring us closer to understanding their needs and encouraging healthier stewardship of the oceans. The exhibition is curated by Alaina Claire Feldman, Director and Curator of Miskin Gallery, Baruch College; David Gruber, Distinguished Professor of Biology and Environmental Sciences, Baruch College; and Jennifer Seas, Director and Chief Curator of the Tarble Arts Center, Eastern Illinois University. EXHIBITION: WATERSHED SEPTEMBER 22, 2023 - FRIDAY, MARCH 15, 2024 TARBLE ARTS CENTER 2010 9TH STREET CHARLESTON, IL 61920 • FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC Watershed is a work of land art that proposes to repurpose approximately 8,000 square feet of pedestrian walk on the Tarble’s grounds that have become degraded over the past forty years by the growth of intricate bald cypress root systems. The proposal would see these hardscapes demolished and processed into new concrete for a reimagined configuration. Reflecting the original design of the museum’s architecture in playful ways, this artwork will create more area for the Tarble’s cypress trees to flourish while supporting native plants and pollinators, as well as create a platform for people to visit, rest, read, play, exercise, and participate in future Tarble programs. While this large-scale project continues to develop, the Tarble has installed a nineteen-by-four-foot model of the proposed artwork in our galleries to help visitors imagine the new landscape it will introduce. Young visitors and their caretakers are invited to play gently with the model in this gallery along with special edition toys and books by the Italian modernist designer Enzo Mari. Each class will build on the previous, and students will complete a small glass project in each class. • LAMPWORKING 1 BEADMAKING (OCT. 6) The first class will focus on familiarizing students with basic glass chemistry, the torch, safety, various tools of the trade, getting the feel of glass properties when hot vs. cold, and creating basic round beads which are the building blocks of most forms of lampwork. Students will finish one bead by the end of class and pick it up the following week. • LAMPWORKING 2 WHALE TAIL (OCT. 13) The second class will focus on helping students refine their basic beadmaking skills and then introduce them to making cylindrical beads as a base for sculptural forms. Students will complete a small glass whale tail by the end of class and pick it up the following week. Lampworking 1 required. • LAMPWORKING 3 SEASCAPE (OCT. 20) The third class will teach students how to apply silver foil to the tips of ivory glass rods, melting the foil in and then pulling stringers from it to create what is known as “SIS” (silver ivory stringers). Students will then be taught how to use a combination of pastel ivory and transparent blue glass to create a “seascape” bead, decorating the “water’s edge” with SIS, as well as how to use a clear stinger to create optional swirls along the line where the beach and water meets. Students will complete a small glass seascape and pick it up the following week.
