COVER STORY
I nherently masculine, the term “businessman” usually prompts mental
images portraying a Brooks Brothers suit, stylish tie accessorizing a
personality that is both authoritative and decisive. However, all of these
attributes can also found just as frequently among successful business-
women. Case in point, Mary Beth York, founder and CEO of M.B. York

We recently had the opportunity to sit down with this stunning entrepreneur
who, in addition establishing an internationally recognized brand, is an equally
dynamic mother. This Phoenix native, is living proof that power players can be
beautiful yet strong, modest though confident, and self-reliant but still altruistic.

With the Stars…she has made it more fun for
me having her there and seeing things through
her eyes! Plus, there have been lots of perks for
her, like meeting Brad Pitt and George Clooney
on a set the same day when they were both up
for Oscars. Being able to give her these experi-
ences has surpassed any other successes I have
had on my own.
IBM: Ok, so let’s get down into it. When did
you decide that you wanted to be the master of
your destiny by starting your own company?
Mary Beth: I have always had the heart of an
entrepreneur. Even as a child, my dad would give
me his junk mail to open and I loved it. I pre-
tended I had my own business. When I was in
high school I taught aerobics at Chicago Health
Club, and after listening to all the girls at my
Catholic High School talk about wanting to lose
weight during lunch, I asked the nuns if I could
teach classes after school. They agreed, so I put
up posters and charged $12 a girl. I was shocked
when I had 250 girls sign up, and had my first
taste of making money with my business ideas.
That business grew and expanded and gave me
the freedom and independence at 16 to buy my
own car, clothes, and take trips with my own
money.
I have never wanted to depend on
anyone else, so realizing I could figure
things out my own, I never looked
back. After one year at the University
of Illinois, and hating every minute of
it, I moved to Scottsdale and got hired at an
upscale hair salon at the Biltmore as a reception-
ist and took full time business classes and night.
I worked my way up to managing multiple loca-
tions and eventually became a makeup artist and
esthetician, as well and opening my own spas
and salons.
It all happened naturally, and although there
have always been huge challenges, I never, for one
minute doubted that I’d picked right vocation for
me and what I love. Beauty, glamour, business,
and helping women feel better about themselves,
has always been my calling.
IBM: How were you received within the
industry?
Mary Beth: I always had a special niche in
the beauty industry, and when I created my own
products, it was after working on thousands of
women and hearing the same problems and com-
plaints over and over. No one knew how to do
their makeup, and women were frustrated by the

whole makeup experience. The department
stores are hit or miss, and most women have
bought more things they regretted than prod-
ucts they were happy with. I learned how to
quickly solve their problems and gained their
trust and loyalty by making them look great,
younger, and teaching them how to dupli-
cate the look at home and building tools and
instructions into my packaging.
IBM: So let’s talk about the early stages of
your entrepreneurship. What was that like
for you? Was there doubt or fear? Worries
or concerns?
Mary Beth: The biggest worries, doubts,
fears or concerns were actualized when I
realized that most people were not as hard
working as me. I found the employee pool to
be a huge disappointment, and being a young
woman myself, had a hard time getting other
women to respect me. I eventually learned to
trust my own judgement and hire young girls,
right out of esthetics school and train them
my way. I stopped listening to others and just
looked for people with the right attitude. It
took many years and hundreds of employees,
but I did figure it out learned you can never let
the wrong person go too soon. I also realized
that I didn’t have
to be their friend,
it was OK if
they didn’t
like me, and
that I could
ask for what I needed and expect
the job to get done. I finally found a great staff,
but it wasn’t easy.
IBM: Was there any point at all where you
thought it was more than what you had bar-
gained for? That maybe you should move in
a different direction?
Mary Beth: Headquartered in Scottsdale,
which is such a seasonal community, I often
had serious concerns during the slow summer
months. It is challenging to keep a positive atti-
tude when business practically screeches to a
halt. You always think you can plan for it, but
it is still is no fun.
Actually, I have thought about walking
away many times, but I love what I do. I am
extremely stubborn when I put my mind to
something, and I do not give up. Sometimes it
isn’t a good thing. I held on to one of my busi-

Mary Beth: Work hard and dream big. Become your own brand
and don’t wait for the world to crown you anything! Create your own
opportunities!
IBM: Mary Beth, thank you for your time, it has been an absolute
pleasure working with you. In closing, if you could offer any words
of wisdom to young business women out there, what would they be?
Mary Beth: You have to have confidence and be able to sell. Whatever
you are doing or creating, it all comes down to sales. Whether it is a
product or a service, you have to be able to communicate why anyone
needs it, and stand out from the crowd with unique branding. Try to
be different and don’t be a follower!

own personal challenges, but those who make it to the top agree, it’s
all worth the hard work and commitment. Just ask Mary Beth York,

the pleasure of seeing a few photos of her, and
she is absolutely beautiful. What are three things
that you want your daughter to learn and know
from your life’s experiences?
Mary Beth: Life is what you make it. You are
manifesting and creating everything at all times.

Beauty Ammo Kit–Eye Beauty
Secrets
Having been based in Scott-
sdale, Arizona as a make
up artist, esthetician and
spa owner for many years,
I specialize in working with dry, dehy-
drated and sun-damaged skin. When I
started out as a make up artist over 20
years ago, I struggled with the fact that
no matter how great I could make some-
one look with make up, if they had major
crow’s feet, dark circles, and/or under-
eye puffiness, it didn’t seem to matter.
All you would notice was the eye area
problem(s). Often, the concealer and/or
powder and/or foundation would make
the problem(s) worse. Noticing that al-
most every woman that walked in my
spa had this issue, I set about creating a
solution.
Is Your Concealer and
Powder too Cakey?
These issues affect women every-
where. I have done make up for women
in LA, New York, Orlando, Dallas, Vegas
and many cities in between, and I have
heard (and seen) how powder and con-
cealer cakes into fine lines and makes
them look worse. Even young girls in
their late teens and early twenties seem
to have crows feet and “feathering” un-
der the eyes. Whether a woman has a
small issue or a large issue with dry skin
and dark circles, she wants help. Our
confidence is increased when we look in
the mirror and like what we see.

Paint by Numbers Eyeshadow Kit
Having done the makeup of
thousands of women over
the years, I can say with
authority that most women
have no idea how to apply eye makeup.
I hear it from every woman I work on
and see it firsthand when they sit in my
makeup chair. They are either: unclear
what looks good on them and how to
apply it so they do little or nothing OR
have a set routine that they do every
day that is not flattering…yet they don’t
know it’s not flattering!
How We Get Stuck in
Bad Makeup Routines
Often, women will be attached to a liq-
uid liner, or some kind of frosty shadow
combination that they apply every day
without fail, and have no idea how to
break the cycle – or that they even need
to break the cycle! At one point or an-
other, many women had a department
store makeover. Usually, the amount of
colors used during this makeover – and
inability of the salesperson to teach them
how to duplicate the look at home – re-
sults in a half-baked makeover attempt
that is utterly lacking, yet still becomes
a woman’s routine for the next 10 years.
Keep it Simple
I am shocked that most women who
apply lots of shadow seem to think it
looks good, when more often than not,
it actually makes them look worse. This,
in my opinion, is why most men don’t
like makeup. They see so many women

Natural Looking
Makeup Applicati
Iwanted to share my thoughts on make-
up application, and what men really
think about it. Having worked with
thousands of women, I have heard the
same things over and over, so I can say
with certainty that most men don’t like a
heavily made up look.
Enter The Kardashians…
Bringing theatrical makeup application
to daytime with millions of girls following,
I can’t help but wonder why women would
follow their lead over listening to the men
that love them, whether it be their fathers,
husbands or boyfriends. I know there are
men out there that love their wives no mat-
ter what their makeup or lack thereof looks
like, but I have also had men whisper to me
that they hate it, and words to the effect of
“they think know better!”
I also can confidently say that there have
been countless times I have done some-
one’s makeup, and the client tells me later
that the minute they walked in the door,
their husband commented on how great
they look. They even go so far to say, go
back and buy everything she put on your
face. That is my testament to the fact that
men don’t hate makeup, they just hate bad
makeup, and unfortunately they rarely see
what they would consider a good makeup
application.
