Activity Napier's method of multiplication using grid

This method was introduced by John Napier, a
Scottish Mathematician.
Multiply: 36 × 24

Steps:

• Make a grid of two rows and two columns and divide
them diagonally from right to left as shown in the figure.
Upper triangle shows Tens and the lower triangle shows
Ones.

• Multiply 6 and 2, 6 × 2 = 12
1 Tens and 2 Ones. Write 1 in the upper triangle and 2 in the lower triangle.
• Multiply 3 and 2, 3 × 2 = 6
0 Tens and 6 ones. Write 0 on the upper triangle and 6 on the lower triangle.
• Multiply 6 and 4, 6 × 4 = 24 = 2 Tens and 4 Ones.
Write 2 in the upper triangle and 4 in the lower triangle.
• Multiply 3 and 4, 3 × 4 = 12 = 1 Tens and 2 Ones.
Write 1 with upper triangle and 2 in the lower triangle.
• Add the numbers as shown and write the sum outside the box.
• Write the number from the left top.
