21 FOOD FROM PLANTS

Objectives

After completing the study of this unit, students will be able to:
• identify the food obtained from plants.
• classify food items into different categories.

Most of our food comes from plants. We get fruits, vegetables,
cereals and pulses from plants. We also get coffee, tea, sugar,
oil and spices from plants.

Cereals

Wheat, rice, maize and barley are some examples of cereals.
Cereals make up most of our food.

We get pulses from peas, grams, beans and kidney beans.

Our Food

We eat different types of foods. We eat some food items after
cooking. For example, roti, dal, rice, curry, vegetables, etc. But
we eat some food without cooking. For example, carrot,
cucumber, radish, papaya, etc. We should wash these food items
before eating. Some of us are vegetarians and others are non-
vegetarians. Vegetarians do not eat meat.
On special occasions like in feasts and festivals, we eat special
varieties of food.

Objective

After completing the study of this unit, students will be able to:
• differentiate between healthy and unhealthy conditons.

Keeping fit and healthy is important for us. To keep ourselves
healthy we must eat nutritious food. We need to take rest. We
should take physical exercise regularly. We should clean our
bodies and surroundings regularly.

I eat nutritious food. I drink pure water.
I do not like junk food. I eat roti, rice,
dal, meat, egg, milk and fish.

I love to play safe games. Playing
is fun. I play in the playground.
I play with my friends. Playing
keeps me fit and fine. Playing,
walking, swimming and running
are good exercises.

I take a rest.
I go to bed early and get up early too.

2 3 KEEPING OURSELVES SAFE

Objectives

After completing the study of this unit, students will be able to:

• follow rules for one's safety.
• state the importance of safety rules.

We must take care of ourselves. We should follow the safety
rules. Safety rules protect us from harm. In this unit, we will
learn some safety rules.

Never try to light a fire cracker. Do not
touch the electric wire. Do not touch
the hot electric iron.

Objective

• introduce health post and explain its importance.

I live in a small village. Most of the people here are educated.
They are conscious about their health. In my village, there is a
health post. In this health post, there is a health assistant. He

be treated. Small children get vaccinated here to prevent various
diseases.
We should go to the health post when we feel sick. We should
not take any medicine without doctor's advice. We should be
careful about our health.
