HISTORY OF CROOKED STICK GOLF CLUB
A look at Pete and Alice Dye’s “firstborn”
“Crooked Stick was a dream. There was
nothing here. But Pete envisioned the
whole fabulous thing,” said Alice Dye.
That vision became Crooked Stick —
and it spawned a love for the place that
would invigorate the Dyes for the rest
of their lives.
And just how did their love for “The
Stick” turn out? Consider the results.
A perennial “U.S. Top 100” course,
Crooked Stick reached that summit in
1971, just four years after conclusion of
construction. In all, it has been awarded

was a proverbial “big bang” — the birth
of a new era in American golf course

discover what might lie beyond the
game’s “Golden Age” — their answer
came in the form of Pete and Alice
Dye’s Crooked Stick Golf Club.
With barely 10 course designs under
their belt and fresh off a tour of the
great courses of Scotland, the fledgling
designers returned home to Indianapolis
intent on building “the finest golf

they began.

And how did the Dyes feel about
Crooked Stick? Alice, perhaps, summed
it up best in these words which she
spoke to fellow members at the close
of the club’s 2009 annual meeting:

PETE AND ALICE DYE —
AMERICA’S FIRST COUPLE OF GOLF
Golf has been played for more than
500 years. Yet with hundreds of millions
of devotees who have enjoyed the game
through the centuries, golf has never
known a “power couple” as influential
and important as Pete and Alice Dye.
First as competitive players, then as
renowned course designers, the Dyes
have made an indelibly positive impact
on the game.
Paul (Pete) Dye was born in Urbana,
Ohio, just west of Columbus in 1925.
Alice O’Neal was born in 1927, to a
prominent family in Indianapolis.
Alice became a golf champion early in
life. In her career she won nine Indiana
State Championships, 11 Indianapolis
city championships, three Florida State
crowns, the Women’s North and South,
the Eastern, the Doherty Cup, and
earned a berth on the victorious 1950s — champion golfers

COHOAT BROTHERS LEARNED
LIFE-CHANGING LESSONS AT CROOKED STICK
Both Matt and Jeff spent many years at
Crooked Stick, whether it was caddying,
working in the shop or serving as caddie
manager.
For the Cohoat family, the Evans
Scholarship was life-changing. “It was
a huge boost to our family in terms of
pride and being grateful,” Matt said.
“Across the whole board, it was a
beautiful thing for our family to feel
and experience.”
From the caddie program at Crooked
Stick, the brothers learned values that
they have carried with them on their
paths to success in their lives today.
When asked what caddying taught them,
Jeff stressed the people skills he acquired
on the course. “Most importantly, how
to deal with a wide variety of people,”
he explained. “Whether it was

CROOKED STICK
GOLF CLUB
Crooked Stick Golf Club, host venue of the 2020 Western Amateur,
was built in 1964, designed by famed course architect Pete Dye.
Consistently ranked as a top-100 course in the United States by
prominent golf media, this par-72, 7,516-yard layout has hosted
numerous golf championships over the past 30 years, including the
2012 BMW Championship, won by Rory McIlroy, and the 2016
BMW Championship, won by Dustin Johnson. Crooked Stick also
played host to the 1991 PGA Championship won by John Daly,
as well as the 1993 U.S. Women’s Open, the 2005 Solheim Cup
and the 2009 U.S. Senior Open Championship won by Fred Funk.

YARDS 358 — PAR 4
On this fair opening hole, favor the left side
of the fairway to avoid the tall trees on the
right. A long iron or fairway wood from the HOLE 1
tee will leave you with a short iron to this
small green well protected by bunkers
front left and back right.

YARDS 442 — PAR 4
On this sharp dogleg, your drive should
favor the right side to avoid the large fairway
bunker on the left. A mid- to short-iron
approach to this well-protected green can
lead to birdie, but missing the green leaves
a tough up-and-down.

YARDS 200 — PAR 3
Hole location determines how to play this
par 3. When the flagstick is back, club
selection is extremely important. However,
you can be more aggressive with a front or
middle hole location. If you miss the green
and find yourself in the pot bunker on the
left, you’re facing a sure bogey.

Typically a three-shot hole, the first par 5
is the toughest. After driver off the tee,
pay attention to the fairway bunkers
that come into play on your second.

flat green must avoid the deep bunker on
the front and left sides of the green.

Three fairway bunkers await any tee shot

tricky, elevated green. A par is well

YARDS 457 — PAR 4
The lake on the right side makes the tee
shot on this long par 4 even more difficult.
Mounding and new pot bunkers collect any HOLE 10
tee shots that chase through the fairway on
the left side. A mid-iron approach must be
carefully placed on this undulating green.
You can bail out to the left of the green,
but go anywhere else and you’ll face
a tough up-and-down.

HOLE 11
YARDS 556 — PAR 5
On this par 5, beware of driving through
the dogleg as the fairway kicks to the right
at the corner. Favor the left side of the
fairway on your second shot. The green
slopes severely from back left to front right,
so play your approach a bit left of center.

YARDS 424 — PAR 4
There is much more room on the left side
of the tee shot landing area than you can
see. If you miss right, you’ll end up in a HOLE 12
massive valley. Keep your approach shot
below the hole. There is a bail out area
to the right of the green.

HOLE 13
YARDS 182 — PAR 3
This picturesque par 3 plays slightly
downhill to a very severe green. Club
selection is everything. The back of the
green slopes away from the tee, so when
the flagstick is in back, aim for the
middle of the green and let the slope
funnel the ball to the hole.

YARDS 483 — PAR 4
This long, sharp dogleg left par 4
is another risk-reward hole. A tee shot
down the center of the fairway leaves an HOLE 14
extremely long second, but a strong
drive that carries the creek on the left
leaves you with a short-iron approach.
The choice is yours.
