2 In the Pocket “In the pocket” is a state of artistic creation both dancers and jazz musicians strive for. It means to be so in your element and so attuned to the rhythm that each movement feels e ortless and right. Inspired by Dave Brubeck’s approach to music, this work is all about the joy and artistry that result from dancing together. First performed as an in-studio performance in 2019, it was important to me that the dancers make their character their own, thinking about how to embody the dancer they want to be and how this artistry unifi es them to create a work that is collaborative and extraordinary. 3 La Fil le Mal Gardeé Synopsis Lise and Colas are in love and want to marry. However, the Widow Simone wants Lise to marry the simple minded, but extremely rich, Alain. She has arranged with Alain’s father, Thomas, for a marriage contract between Lise and Alain. The Widow Simone does her best to keep Lise and Colas apart but is unsuccessful in her attempts to do so. At harvest time, the Widow Simone and Lise are taken to a fi eld for a picnic lunch by Thomas and Alain. The farm children join in a ribbon dance around a maypole, and the girls also join in a clog dance with the Widow Simone. A thunderstorm arises, and everyone rushes for shelter. Alain is carried away on the wind by his open umbrella. The Widow Simone and Lise return to their home. The crops are brought in by the farm workers, and the widow then leaves after locking the gate behind her to prevent Lise from leaving. Lise thinks about Colas and pretends to be getting married. To her embarrassment, Colas suddenly rises from the stacked crops. At the sounds of the Widow Simone returning, Lise and Colas look around desperately for a place where he can hide. Not fi nding anywhere suitable, Lise quickly takes Colas to her house and shuts the door just before Widow Simone enters the yard. Widow Simone orders Lise to go to the house and put on her wedding dress for her forthcoming marriage to Alain. The horrifi ed Lise tries to remain where she is, but Widow Simone pushes Lise into her house and locks the door. Thomas arrives with his son, Alain, who is still clutching his umbrella. The farm workers, friends of both Lise and Colas, also arrive. When Alain opens the door to Lise’s house, Lise appears in her wedding dress accompanied by Colas. Thomas and Alain take o ence, and the enraged Thomas tears up the marriage contract. The two leave very upset, taking the beautiful wedding ring with them. Lise and Colas then beg Widow Simone to look favorably upon their marriage. Love conquers all, and the widow gives her approval. Joyfully celebrating the happy outcome for Lise and Colas, everyone leaves. The house is left quiet and empty, until Alain returns for his umbrella which he had accidentally left behind. Alain is also happy with the love of his life – his umbrella.
