my game plan. I wanted to be an artist, I wanted to be a painter, but unfortunately, I had good marks in class 10th and I
was forced into science”. For Lokesh Ohri, an anthropologist and a native of Dehradun, life has been very eventful. Having

done his schooling from St. Joseph’s Academy, as a child, he faced a tough time in realizing his dreams. With artistic instincts
constantly brewing in him, he was forced to enter into a corporate world, suppressing his love for art and culture.

Peer and parental pressure made him leave Delhi College of Arts and take up commerce as his subject of study. He was
never happy with what he was doing, much later in life he realized that art and culture was his calling. It was after coming
back to Dehradun; he drifted towards his passion, and joined the cultural hub of SPIC MACAY. Serving as National Executive

Head, he got an opportunity to travel across the country and meet talented young artists. He was also lucky enough in
getting a chance to journey with great people like Ustad Bismillah Khan and Pandit Bhimsen Joshi.

After being a part of an indefinable learning experience for 7-8 years at SPIC MACAY, Lokesh finally returned to his
hometown. With an idea of promoting rural entrepreneurship for art and culture heritage, he started his own NGO, called

REACH. He worked with classical traditions, mainstream traditions and folk culture. He had no clue what anthropology
meant, until that fateful day when he met Prof. William S. Sax during one of his journeys to Srinagar, Garhwal. This man
globally considered as an expert on Garhwal, entered into a conversation about his work with Lokesh. He found his work

quite interesting, and then came the turning point in his life. It was then, Lokesh finally made up his mind to take up
anthropology as his study under the benevolent guidance of Prof. William.

Exclusive Interview with Lokesh Ohri
By Ridhisha Rana

What encouraged you to take up anthropology as a career?
When I passed out of school and college, like many youth who are not oriented towards a career in applied sciences, I had no
clue about what I wanted to do in life. I tried to enter art school but family and peers immediately aborted this move. I took up
management, worked in a corporate organization, but gradually drifted towards conservation and art, where I found my true
calling. I worked with SPIC MACAY and then set up another NGO called REACH. Social and Cultural Anthropology was a
natural extension of this, since there was always the intrinsic desire to delve deeper into the cultures I had come to adore and
respect. The opportunity to do so came in the form of an acquaintance with renowned anthropologist Prof. William S. Sax, the
global expert on Uttarakhand culture, who agreed to mentor me and encouraged my research.

“I THINK INDIA'S COMPOSITE CULTURE
IS IT’S BIGGEST STRENGTH AND WITHIN IT WE CAN FIND SOLUTIONS

TO WORLD'S MOST PRESSING PROBLEMS.”

While writing "Been There, Doon That", what were the

The biggest challenge for an author is to get his work

excitement of discovering something new and bringing it to

IT HAS RIGHTLY BEEN SAID,
“THE MAGIC OF CHRISTMAS NEVER ENDS AND
ITS GREATEST OF GIFTS ARE FAMILY AND FRIENDS”

Humming with constant chatter, fun and loads of merriment, the WIC space was filled with bundles of joy at Christ-
mas. The innocent faces were beaming with smiles and their eyes twinkled in happiness. Every corner was decked

with Christmas lights, stockings, wreaths, turning the space into a joyful wonderland of festivity.
With the carols playing in the background, children were seen crowding around Santa. The most amusing part of the
two day carnival was the magic show and photo booth arranged for kids. Pictures with Santa and not forgetting the

special movie screening for kids served like a topping on the cake. Christmas at WIC was everything a child could
possibly wish for. Apart from the charming Christmas tree, the happy families wrapped up in love looked the most

adorable. Christmas here was not just a celebration but was a feeling worth experiencing.
