AN INTERVIEW WITH ROSHEN DALAL

What were your hobbies while growing up? Have you always been an avid
reader?
I was always an avid reader. Initially I did nothing but read, later I also liked
playing chess and spending time with friends.

History is a subject that children are usually scared of. How can it be made more
interesting according to you?
There are many different ways. In my latest book, India at 70: Snapshots since
Independence, I have interspersed traditional history/politics with culture and
sports. I think the teacher can always interest students in history, but there needs
to be flexibility in the syllabus. Play-acting, role-playing, discussions, and visits to
historic sites and museums all generate interest. Even a small but genuine piece
of pottery that is over 2000 years old, can create awe in students.
