TAKING JOURNALISM

AN INTERVIEW WITH RAJ KANWAR

Please tell us a little about your interactions with Jawaharlal Nehru?
My first meeting with Nehru took place sometime in 1954 at Dehradun's Circuit
House. Naturally, I was quite nervous but Nehru put me at ease. Nehru was
undoubtedly a noble soul with a large heart. I met him nearly half a dozen times
thereafter. My last meeting with Nehru was on about 23 May 1964 – two days
before he died.

What are your views on Present Day What were the challenges you
Journalism? faced while doing Political
The journalism today has a new avatar. reporting from Dehradun?
Its technology has been revolutionized I did not do much political
and has become unrecognizable from reporting. Mine was mostly
the past. And the quality of reporting has reporting on local news. The only
greatly improved at national level. Yet, political reporting I did was
the ethics have taken a beating at state covering the speeches Nehru and
and local levels. Indira Gandhi a couple of times.
I also covered the arrival in
“IN ORDER TO BE A GOOD JOURNALIST, Mussoorie of Dalai Lama in 1959.
ONE HAS TO BE SIMULTANEOUSLY That too was a memorable
A VORACIOUS READER” occasion.

How can one give back to the community being a journalist?
Yes, we journalists owe a lot to the society. Society gives us much respect and
we have easy access to the high and mighty. We must never misuse this liberty.
After all, we need to give something back to the society for the honour they
have bestowed on us. Our stories must be constructive with a view to improving
things and not negative.
