WIC Talks with Aloke and Maanas Lal
By Mansi Singh

When asked about his father, half smiling and half talking, Maanas says “He has given me absolute freedom as a son”,
“I am fortunate, that I have a license to be crazy”. For Maanas, his father has always been an inspiration. His artistic
side was the one that inspired Maanas the most and made him fulfill his dreams of being a painter, a photographer

and a writer.
Apart from the eternal relationship they share, liberalism is something that holds both of them together, the freedom
to do what one yearns to do. “I don’t remember a single terrible thing he said to me”; “there is no baggage we
are carrying”, says Maanas. It is a connection of heart, between the two which is truly indefinable. It is more like
understanding the unspoken words or listening to an unsung tune. Art not only connects them emotionally but also
spiritually. There is this deep affinity between the two, the closeness that doesn’t require spoken words. In the
language of Maanas “I could always make out what he was trying to say through his works of art.” Their emotions
usually come out on canvas and this is how art is something that comes naturally to them. “Deewane Log Hai”, this is
how Maanas defines himself and his father. Both Aloke and Maanas aim to achieve happiness in life and wish to earn

their own happy space.

“ART BINDS US TOGETHER”

In Dialogue with Maya Bathija

By Mansi Singh

“I have never been to this part of the world”, she smiled while talking about Dehradun and its surrounding beauty. A
very simple small town girl who belonged to Salem, Maya had never imagined of writing a book. Father being a well

thought-out money lender served no less than a backbone of industries in the small town they lived in.
“Growing up was a dinner table conversation”, she said when asked about her childhood. Having done her schooling
from Sacred Heart Girls’ Anglo Indian High School, run by Irish Nuns, even at the age of 6, she didn’t have a book to
read. “Growing up in the mountains I became an introvert, selective introvert, a person who reads, torch under the
bed.” Recalling her childhood memories about her school in the hills, she was struck by nostalgia while journeying

across Dehradun.
Talking about her grades in school she laughed while saying ’’I barely passed with 40 something in Maths”. Maya
was never good at calculations and numbers. She had a longing for books but didn’t have a single bookstore in her
town. She only got to read until the day she got a chance to work in a bookstore in a town nearby. Suddenly her life
changed as now she could read books and feel content. The very feeling of being at this bookstore induced a sense

of belonging in her. It was not her bookstore, but she still owned it.

Apart from different schools, there were small

it was completed in the year 1953. This landmark was inaugurated
by Lal Bahadur Shastri, a well-known freedom fighter.

Interview with Aloke Lal and Maanas Lal

By Mansi Singh

It was that fine day when the rain was pattering and the sounds of the cricket in the background.
on the tinshade of that charming art gallery Steamy cups of coffee were served to us in shiny
made out of pinewood, nuzzled amidst the lush bone china cups and that is when I entered into a
greenery. Tucked away from the hustle and bustle beautiful conversation with Aloke Lal and Maanas
we sat there listening to the relentlessly chirping birds Lal on their indefinably fascinating Art Gallery.

When did you come up with your first art work?
Maanas Lal: “Technically I came up with my first professional art
work in 2005, about 12 years back. As far as creating artworks
as a child is concerned I started at the age of 4 or 5. I loved
sketching back then. My first professional work was a
photographic work and my first professional painting happened
around 2012. The serious painting began much later, it was in
2005 & 2006 that I came up with my work of photography and
held my first exhibition at the same time.”

What was your reaction to it?
Aloke Lal: “Oh! It was very interesting. As a child he used to
sketch Mickey Mouses and Donald ducks. He was very fond of
sketching these characters. He was very quick with them and
one could see that there was some talent in him. But it was very
early to comment yet was very exciting to realize about his
talent. Indeed I was very happy to see that my son was inclined
towards art.”

Are there any art works in your Art Gallery on which you both
have worked together?
Aloke Lal: “We know our areas of strengths and weaknesses, at
times when I feel there is something to be done digitally on the
computer, it is his forte and he is able to handle it better. But if
something is to do with pure painting, especially portraits, I think
I am the one doing more of work than him. Is that right Manas?”
Maanas Lal: “Yes, we often collaborate in our work, particularly
when we do things like restoration. I have a different technique.
My painting particularly is more towards impressionism and he
is gifted by realism. Mix of the two is sometimes required for
creating an art work so that it is where we come together at
times. Also whenever it comes to taking suggestions in terms of
photographs, it’s a collaborative effort. Most of our art works are
infact collaborated.”

“The you I lost in the truths I kept,
The me I lost in the lies I told.

The me I lost in the lust I showed.

How old is the Art Gallery?
Aloke Lal: The Art Gallery is one and a half years
old. In the beginning it was not like this, it by and

Apart from photography and art, what inspired
you to get into music?
Maanas Lal: “The paternal and maternal sides of

instrument. I always enjoyed listening to music
since I was a kid. With all such influences around
and also the opportunity to listen to music from
different eras and genres, singing happened
naturally to me. I did not make many efforts to
take interest in music. As far as my singing goes,
my father had serious doubts about my singing
abilities. When I was a young kid, he often used
to tell my mom that he will never be able to sing
a line, as back then I never used to sing well.
But my mom had faith in me, and that worked
ultimately. The first song that I ever sang was “Dil
Chahta Hai”, that is something that struck their
chord. They finally praised me that gave me the
motivation of trying my luck in terms of singing. I
picked up the guitar later in school. Now it’s been
a long time, later I also learned classical music.
It’s been a nice journey and the influences have
been many.”

“There are divine things more beautiful than words can tell”

Tiny fingers covered with chalk dust, scribbling random figures on the wall. One
can spend hours watching them from a distance. Gaze at the twinkle in their eyes
casted by their own world of imagination. Their thoughts you can’t hold so is their
art which is untold. Children see magic because they look for it which is not visible

to our eyes. It’s a world full of wonder and an art so divine.

possibilities are endless. This space is the best for your child to grow. Watch children
chalk out their own stories on the black board. A sun, a cloud or a butterfly or two,

red, yellow green or blue.
