2021 Annual
Report
Our Mission
Our mission is to positively impact the lives of Central Florida youth by providing
educational programs that build character, instill life-enhancing values and
promote healthy choices through the game of golf.
First Tee — Central Florida is a chapter of First Tee, a youth development and youth
mentorship organization that uses golf as a vehicle to develop in young people the
positive values inherent in the game such as honesty, integrity, sportsmanship, and
confidence. First Tee — Central Florida delivers programs in traditional golf settings
including golf courses and driving ranges as well as in schools and other youth
service organizations. Research has shown that participants are learning and using
life skills such as interpersonal skills, self-management, goal-setting, and resilience
skills. Perhaps most importantly, many participants are receiving college
scholarships and career opportunities because of their involvement with First Tee.
Message from the Executive Director
Dear Stakeholders,
All year long our staff, coaches, volunteers, Board members, partners and donors
invested in over 100k kids and teens throughout Central Florida. Thanks to all of
these people involved, 2021 has been an incredible year! The kids and teens learned
golf but more importantly they learned core values, healthy habits, life skills,
character development, mentorship, and leadership skills. They are learning what it
takes to be a "Game Changer".
The power of First Tee-Central Florida comes from the passionate people who live
and breathe our shared mission every day. We celebrate your generous support
and unwavering trust and belief.
Thank you for helping us deliver a memorable and fun year. Please enjoy some of
our 2021 highlights on the ensuing pages.
All the best,
W. Scott Spragg III

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion has always been at the core of First Tee’s identity and
essential to our continued success as an organization. In 2021, we recommitted to living
up to our ideals with DEI at the core. Our purpose in increasing diversity is to ensure that
it is part of the fabric of our organizational culture, and in all aspects of what we do. This
is not a project, program, or series of events, but an expression of who we are and an
intentional process to ensure that our mission is fulfilled.
This year the First Tee-Central Florida made great strides to improve the diversity of
those participating in our golf programs. In our golf and life skills programs, more than
46% of our participants are from diverse backgrounds, as we continue to reach out to
traditionally underserved areas of Central Florida. In addition, our commitment to our
financial assistance program has helped to remove cost as a barrier to participation for
many families. Along those lines we have initiated a golf club trade up program that
provided over 250 sets of clubs to participants free of charge, further breaking down
barriers to participation for our families. Through our Girl’s Golf program, we have
increased percentage of female participants to 36% this year. These girl only events
allowed the participants to build confidence, camaraderie, and passion for the game.
Furthermore, we added 4 new Title 1 schools and a chapter of the Boys and Girls Club to
our school and community programs. These additions have enriched us greatly and
infused a spirit of enthusiasm for our future as an organization. The inroads we have
made to diversity, equity, and inclusion have allowed us to engage with children of
varying racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
Our commitment to diversity is not limited to our participants, but includes our staff,
coaches, and board members. We were intentional in recruiting board members that
reflect the incredible diversity of Central Florida. We have increased our numbers on the
board that are of different ethnic and racial backgrounds, as well as age and gender.
Among the 12 new coaches we hired this year, 33% are minority and 50% are women. We
believe that the children benefit greatly from the interaction with our coaches that bring
their own unique style and experience.
First Tee-Central Florida has focused on
increasing the participation of females
and ethnic minorities in the game of golf
through character education. We will
continue to emphasize and broaden our
scope to keep pace with the changing
demographics of Central Florida.
