The Jack and Gitta Nagel Family Legacy Park
at Bar-Ilan University January 2022 | Shevat 5782
The Talmud relates the following story:
Choni Hamaagal saw an old man planting a carob
tree. Knowing that the carob tree bears fruit only
after 70 years, Choni asked the man, "Do you
intend to eat from this tree?”
The old man responded, "Just as my ancestors
saw to it that when I came into the world I
found fruit trees that I could eat from, so too, I
am making sure my descendants will have fruit
trees available when they come into the world.”
(Babylonian Talmud, Ta’anit 23a)
Planting trees, a particularly beloved practical and
symbolic act in the rabbinic imagination, embodies
Jewish responsibility for each generation to
cultivate resources for the next.
At Bar-Ilan University, few partners and
supporters over the years have characterized
this responsibility more than the Nagel Family.

Ecological Pond and Terrace-
Style Amphitheater
At the entrance to the Legacy Park,
landscaping artists have designed a
picturesque 5-tiered, semicircular
grass-covered stone terrace – an
amphitheater of sorts that can
seat over 100 students. With an
ecological pond on one side, this
3,600 sq.m area is transformed from
a simple entrance to the dormitories
to a beautiful place of friendship
and connection. The pond houses a
circular platform that can be used
as a stage, a central focus for any
number of diverse activities that
may take place there. Whether
through open mic nights, karaoke,
student concerts or lectures, the
amphitheater and pond serve as an
ideal location for togetherness.

Ecological Pond
Ecological ponds are self-cleaning
ponds without the need for any
chemicals, thanks to the plants and
beneficial bacteria in their ecosystem.
Pond ecology is best described as
the interaction of life in the pond
with the environment that exists
there. The pond recycles its own
water and enables aquatic plants to
grow inside. Plants that grow in and
around ponds help cycle nutrients
and remove pollutants from the
water, air and surrounding sediment.
