LETTER FROM MSGR. ART

Dear Sisters and Brothers,

Are you a bridge builder or wall builder in life? The 17th century English poet, John Donne, wrote the now
famous lines,

No man is an island,
Entire of itself,

Every man is a piece of the continent,
A part of the main.

As members of the human family our lives are inextricably bound to one another. As members of God’s family
each of us are bound to our sisters and brothers by virtue of our Father’s creative hand bringing us all to human
existence. For Christians, that bond becomes even more intimate through the waters of baptism that enable us
to call God our Father, Jesus our brother, and each other, brothers and sisters in Christ.

God made us to live out our lives in community. The most intimate and foundational community in society is, of
course, the family. Healthy families are ones where the ‘bridge building’ of healing, forgiveness, acceptance,
tolerance, and the crowing virtue of all, love, abounds and flourishes. Tragically, dysfunctional families are often
characterized by ‘wall builders’ who are more concerned about the narcissistic needs of its members rather than
the selfless nurturing of an environment of love and compassion among all. Dysfunctional families hold on to
walls of anger, resentment and unhealed hurts that can eventually destroy the unity and harmony that may have
once flourished.

In this Holy Year of Mercy, we should all take comfort in our belief in a God who is more concerned about
‘building bridges’ rather than ‘erecting walls’ in our relationship with Him. It is no wonder then that one of the
cherished titles of the Vicar of Christ, our Holy Father, is the ancient title, Pontifex. That word comes from its
Latin root which means “bridge” or “bridge builder.” There is no question that our present Holy Father, Pope
Francis, has embraced this title as he constantly reaches out to build bridges of understanding and compassion in
a world that is so often fractured by the walls of prejudice and indifference. He has particularly been a powerful
voice for the powerless who live on the margins of society or find themselves uprooted from their homelands
because of political strife or economic hardship.

As we continue our Lenten journey with its yearly call to thoroughly examine our conscience as to how we
might be living out the Gospel of conversion in our lives, perhaps we would all profit from meditating on that
opening question as we all strive to deepen our friendship with Christ this Season: Am I a bridge builder or wall
builder in life?

PREGUNTA DE REFLEXION DE LA SEMANA

Tercer Domingo de Cuaresma 28 de febrero, Ciclo C

Éxodo 3:1-8a, 13-15 1 Corintios 10:1-6, 10-12 Lucas 13:1-9

Tema: “Convertíos, porque está cerca el Reino de Dios”.

MENSAJE DE LA SEMANA:

Con este domingo iniciamos la segunda etapa de esta Cuaresma. El CAMINO a la PASCUA continúa. Será
necesario preguntarnos por el lugar exacto donde nos encontramos: ¿Voy siguiendo los pasos de Jesús?
¿Es mi “camino de conversión” un IDENTIFICARME con ÉL, con su estilo de vida? Hemos “quemado” una
primera etapa de este camino y… ¿qué?

Aquí puede aflorar en nosotros el desencanto, esa sensación de fracaso, de no merecer la pena. Algo que
hoy nos invade por todas partes. Creíamos ser los dominadores de la vida, de solucionar todas las cosas,
y… cada día tenemos la sensación de impotencia. Eso que llamamos la “sociedad del bienestar” (el tener,
el disfrutar, el consumir y el acumular) no resuelve el problema último del hombre.

Aquí resuenan las palabras del Evangelio de este domingo: “Si no os convertís, todos pereceréis de la
misma manera”. ¿No será el momento de escuchar más profundamente a Jesús, de GUSTAR de su
proyecto, de descubrirlo en su verdadero significado a través de la Palabra, del encuentro con los
hermanos, en el silencio y en la oración, en un compromiso vivido en gratuidad y generosamente?

¡Ojalá DESEEMOS abrirnos a su novedad
y así GUSTEMOS de su proyecto!

CARTA DEL MSGR. ART

Queridos hermanos y hermanas,

¿Son ustedes creadores de puentes o crean ustedes paredes en sus vidas? El poeta Ingles del siglo 17, John
Donne, escribió la frase famosa,

Ningún hombre es una isla,
Completo en sí mismo.

Cada hombre es un fragmento del continente,
Una parte del todo.

Como miembros de la familia humana nuestras vidas están inextricablemente vinculadas entre sí. Como
miembros de la familia de Dios cada uno de nosotros estamos ligados a nuestros hermanos y hermanas por
la virtud de la mano creadora de nuestro Padre al traernos a la existencia humana. Para los cristianos, ese
vínculo se convierte aún más íntimo a través de las aguas del bautismo que nos permite llamar a Dios
nuestro Padre, a Jesús, nuestro hermano, y a nosotros llamarnos entre sí, hermanos y hermanas en Cristo.

Dios nos hizo para vivir nuestras vidas en comunidad. La comunidad más íntima y fundamental en la
sociedad es, por supuesto, la familia. Familias saludables son las que 'edifican puentes’ de sanación, perdón,
aceptación, tolerancia y la virtud que reina sobre de todo, el amor; abunda y prospera. Trágicamente, las
familias disfuncionales se caracterizan a menudo por ser 'constructoras de paredes' que están más
preocupadas por las necesidades narcisistas de sus miembros en lugar de preocuparse por el cuidado
desinteresado de un ambiente de amor y compasión entre todos. Familias disfuncionales se aferran a las
paredes de ira, resentimiento y heridas sin sanar que pueden eventualmente destruir la unidad y armonía
que algún día pudo haber florecido.

En este Año Santo de la Misericordia, debemos todos tomar consuelo en nuestra creencia en un Dios que
está más preocupado por 'crear puentes' en lugar de 'levantar paredes' en nuestra relación con Él. No es de
extrañar entonces que uno de los preciados títulos del Vicario de Cristo, nuestro Santo Padre, es el
antiguo título, Pontifex. Esa palabra tiene raíz en latín que significa "puente" o "constructor de puentes". No
hay duda que nuestro Santo Padre, el Papa Francisco, ha adoptado este título como al constantemente
construir puentes de comprensión y compasión en un mundo constantemente fracturado por los muros del
prejuicio y la indiferencia. Ha sido en particular una voz poderosa para los impotentes que viven al margen
de nuestra sociedad o aquellos que se encuentran desarraigados de sus países de origen a causa de
conflictos políticos o dificultades económicas.

Al continuar nuestro viaje Cuaresmal con su llamado anual de examinar a fondo nuestra conciencia en
cuanto a cómo podemos vivir el Evangelio de conversión en nuestras vidas, quizás nos beneficiemos al
meditar la pregunta inicial ya que trabajamos para profundizar nuestra amistad con Cristo esta Temporada:
¿soy un constructor de puentes o constructor de la paredes en la vida?

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE

Muchas naciones latinoamericanas son beneficiadas por organizaciones caritativas extranjeras. Pero
estas organizaciones no siempre pueden suplir las necesidades de los pueblos latinoamericanos, por eso
los obispos de Chile buscaron la manera de motivar a su pueblo para que ayude a sus propios
desafortunados. En 1982 los obispos chilenos crearon una nueva practica cuaresmal llamada la Campaña de
Fraternidad. Esta Campaña se motiva en las observancias penitenciales de la oración, el ayuno y la caridad.

Esta práctica de la Iglesia chilena se basa en la tradición cristiana de las obras de caridad y la acción
social. La Campaña de Fraternidad también se funda en la espiritualidad cristiana de la hermandad. Los que
tienen la manera de ayudar han compartido a través de los proyectos de esta obra con jóvenes en riesgo
social, madres solteras, ancianos, prisioneros y otros grupos marginados. Esto se hace en un espíritu de
mutualidad entre los hijos e hijas del creador.

Esta campaña cuaresmal nos desafía a buscar la manera de ayudar a los pobres no como personas
necesitada sino como hermanas y hermanos en Cristo a los cual debemos nuestra cooperación para
mejorar sus vidas. Ellos en torno son la presencia de Cristo quien se encuentra en los más pequeños de la
sociedad.
