“L’Allegro (1631)” “On May Morning” The one the poet talk to is consistent cycle of new beginnings. The theme is the youth, innocence and ‘mirth’ that is generally connected with the coming of Spring, and the ‘blessing’ of new life and color that the month of May offers us with. The tone of this poem is a strongly anticipatory and prophetic tone, it means that the poem is oriented toward a future that has yet to reach. “On His Deceased Wife” His wife is the poet talk to. The theme of the poem is sad and majestic, and the emotion is graceful. It takes the form of narration and is juxtaposed in the dream scene to express the deep pain of losing their beloved wife and the infinite memory of their happy past. Milton's memorial poem is based on romanticism. He believes that even if his beloved wife is dead, their optimistic attitude and firm belief support his belief that he can still love his beloved wife forever and even meet him in heaven. Therefore, this mourning poem is also full of romantic detachment. It shows the dreamlike sweetness of heaven, and paints a rosy coat on the poet's sadness.
