The American Express Tournament

Formerly the Desert Classic, continues to flourish and each year the field gets stronger, and the organizational aspects more con- sistent, which leads to higher attendance. With the addition of American Express’s sponsorship this year, the field should defi- nitely improve and puts American Express as one of the two big- gest names for sponsorship on the West Coast swing.
Part of the reason for the past increased attendance are Lagardere Sports and their very progressive approach to admission.
The paying visitor now has an all-access, all-inclusive ticket for the concert and hospitality areas and to all 3 courses. Transpor- tation to and from the 3 courses and parking area always runs smoothly all week long. The $10 parking fee is very reasonable and Uber and Lyft are also another popular option.
Players love the La Quinta Country Club (54 years and counting as a co-host) and most of the Canadians I speak to also enjoy the LQCC.
Another smart move by Lagardere will be the three local exemp- tions handed out for the tournament.
Tournament host Phil Mickelson always draws in fans, as does Patrick Reed and Jon Rahm. This makes for the stronger field that the tournament is attracting recently, and also because of their USP (Unique Selling Propositions) – Concerts and free ac- cess to all areas of the course. One can assume that many locals will continue to support the tournament so they can attend the free concerts offered on two separate nights. The event’s con- certs have been announced and will feature Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Stevie Nicks on Friday, Jan. 17, and country musician Luke Bryan on Saturday, Jan. 18.

The Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines January 23 -26, 2020.
With its proximity to the desert, Orange County and LA County, many Canadians make the 2 -21/2 hour drive to San Diego from the desert. As with previous visits to the Coachella Valley and the golf tournaments, accolades, envy, jealousy, weather and excite- ment will be the words most used by all the Canadians. Seeing Tiger play and watching Canadian players, makes their enjoy- ment just that much greater. Having the US Open in 2021 at Tor- rey Pines is the icing on the cake.
Many of the Canadians make a long week out of the Farmer’s, es- pecially the landlocked residents of Edmonton and Alberta. Be- ing able to play a course that is on the US Open rotation is a huge attraction, not only for Canadians, but for golfers worldwide. Next year’s tournament will see the latest additions and revisions to both the north and south courses.
There are many Canadians living in San Diego and many have businesses in Southern California. The SanDiego.org is a great connector for them.
Rest assured, the parking lots are going to be at capacity. The rea- son – a golfer named Tiger Woods! How great was it to finally see him back in action in 2019 especially with his historic Master’s win? The Genesis Invitational
February 13 – 16, 2020.
Tiger Woods has committed to play The Genesis Invitational in 2020 at The Riviera Country Club.
In 2016, the PGA Tour’s long-running event (the Northern Trust Open) at Pacific Palisades’ Riviera Country Club became known as the Genesis Open. Now it will be known as “The Genesis In- vitational”.
PGA TOUR Commissioner Jay Monahan recently announced that the Genesis Invitational will receive elevated status on TOUR with the implementation of several significant enhance- ments, beginning in 2020.
Joined by tournament host Tiger Woods and Euisun Chung, Manfred Fitzgerald and Erwin Raphael of title sponsor Genesis at The Riviera Country Club, Monahan highlighted several im- portant changes for the tournament moving forward:
∙ The Genesis Invitational will move to invitational qualifying status and reduce its field from 144 players to 120;
∙ The champion will receive a three-year PGA TOUR exemption, an increase by one year over the standard winner’s exemption on TOUR;
∙ The purse will grow to $9.3 million, among the largest on TOUR and an increase of $1.9 million over the 2019 purse. The winner’s share will be $1.674 million;
∙ In collaboration with the tournament’s broadcast partners, rec- ognition of Woods’ vast accomplishments as a player and his philanthropic work through the TGR Foundation will be ampli- fied through the telecasts and promotion of the tournament. These elements will put the Genesis Invitational in select com- pany on TOUR alongside the Memorial Tournament presented by Nationwide and the Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by
J.B. Holmes
MasterCard. Jack Nicklaus’ Memorial Tournament began award- ing a three-year exemption and elevated purse in 2016 and Palm- er’s tournament did so the following year.
Genesis Motors is the luxury car spinoff company of Hyundai Motor America, which took over as the title sponsor in 2017 of the tournament that debuted in Los Angeles in 1926. Northern Trust was the title sponsor at Riviera for nine years.

The ANA Inspiration, the LPGA’s first major, takes place from April 2-5, 2020 at the Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage.
Desmond Muirhead designed the Dinah Shore Tournament Course in 1970. It has the distinct honor of being rated the No. 1 course in the Coachella Valley for many years and has hosted a Major Championship for more than 40 years. The 18th is a 646- yard par 5 with an island green, and always plays a significant role in determining each year’s champion. In 2009, Brittany Lin- cicome’s eagle on the 72nd hole marked the only time in history one of golf ’s Majors--male or female--was won on the final hole with an eagle.
Since the first tournament in 1972 and since its designation as a major championship in 1983, the former Colgate Dinah Shore Tournament (1982-1999) and Kraft Nabisco Championship (2000 – 2014) has been one of the most popular tournaments in the desert.
Brooke Henderson, Canada’s top female player, will be in the field. Jaclyn Lee, Alena Sharp and Brittany Marchand could be in 2020’s field.
One of the biggest attractions at the tournament is the “Poppies Pond” event instituted in 2006.
“Poppie’s Pond” is named in honor of Terry Wilcox, the longtime tournament director for the Tournament who retired in 2008. The concrete-lined pool is part of Champions Lake, which sur- rounds the 18th (finishing) hole of the LPGA major.
Wilcox is known as “Poppie” to his seven grandchildren. The first champion to jump into Poppie’s Pond to celebrate her vic- tory was Amy Alcott in 1988. Poppie’s Pond is 5-1/2 feet deep at the center and extends about 60 feet on either side of the bridge used by golfers to reach the island green.
The pond is maintained to a swimming pool level with a continuously replenished supply of fresh water, and is easily drainable and refillable to ensure high-quality water. Because the pond is self-contained within the lake, golf course main- tenance crews are able to use chlorine without impacting the lake’s fish or birdlife. As a result, the Tournament winners do not have to worry about the quality of the water when they take the dive.
A statue of Dinah Shore near the 18th green bridge serves as the focal point for Dinah’s Walk of Champions along the lake. The statue and Walk of Champions was unveiled and dedicated to the legendary tournament hostess in 2000. ANA was founded in 1952 with two helicop- ters and has become the largest airline in Japan, as well as one of the most significant airlines in Asia, operating 80 international routes and 118 domestic routes. ANA offers a unique dual hub

model which enables passengers to travel to Tokyo and connect through the two airports in the metropolitan Tokyo, NARITA and HANEDA, to various destinations throughout Japan, and also offers same day connections between various North American, Asian and Chinese cities.

The Three Newest Putters – Exceptional Performance

Recently, I was on site at the Shriner’s Tournament in Las Vegas. I attend this annually so I can meet with those pros with whom I work with mentally.

Odyssey’s Stroke LAB Ten
There are two models, the Stroke Lab Ten and the “Bird of Prey”. My focus is on the Stroke Lab Ten.
Off the bat, what will impress you most is that the Ten sits com- pletely flat and square to the target at address, whereas many other styles of putters force you to take a certain grip to get to this ideal aforementioned position.
Inspired by Odyssey’s #7 and the Indianapolis putter model, the Ten offers premium materials and performance
in two neck options of slant or double bend.
The putter has a square shape and sin-
gle white alignment line that con- trasts with the putter’s dark finish. Referred to as “High Def Align- ment”, this single white alignment

New Vokey Design SM8 Wedges

The PGA Tour’s RSM Classic, the new Vokey Design SM8 wedges will be made available to tour players for the first time.
This marks the start of Titleist’s tour seeding and validation pro- cess for the next generation Vokey Design models – the most played wedges on tour since 2004 and counting. It is the PGA Tour’s longest-running golf club success story.
Master Craftsman Bob Vokey, Vokey Tour Rep Aaron Dill and Director of Wedge R&D Kevin Tassistro will be on site at Sea Island Golf Club, working alongside Titleist’s Tour Reps, intro- ducing players to the new SM8’s and fitting them into the best bounce and grind setups for their game.
The tour debut of SM8 follows months of iteration and testing, including the trial of early unmarked prototypes during practice rounds on the PGA Tour. Those prototypes were incredibly well received, with players commenting on improved flight and feel, and overall better results.

The Staff Model Utility Irons featured a hollow body, providing longer distance, increased forgiveness and improved launch an- gle. The utility irons are constructed with a high-strength C300 maraging steel face that delivers faster ball speeds across the club face.

Working at a hospital specializing in vertebrae and joints, there are a number of patients who have sprained their backs while playing golf. Sometimes, they hurt their back while rounding for a long time. But what’s unique is that many of them take place in the first and second holes within 10 to 15 minutes of tee-off. Generally, the first and second holes do not have par-3 holes and the long hole par 4 or 5 holes, which are surprisingly prone to sprains while hitting drivers, woods and hybrids. Why does this happen at 15 minutes right after the tee off?

ercise. Breathing and blood circulation itself are very different from exercising when you are sitting in an office or resting at home. Breathing is maintained 12 to 15 times per minute when we are in stable condition. Pulse is also average between 60 and 80 times per minute. In stable times, the blood circulation of the body is providing sufficient oxygen and nutrients to the brain and heart, while minimizing the supply of blood to the muscles and organs of the rest of the limbs. When exercising, for the mus- cles in your arms and legs to function sufficiently, your breathing and pulse rate must rise to at least 20% and 100%. Golf swings require enough warm-up to work out the entire body’s muscles, especially to the neck, shoulder, arm, back, waist, hip, legs and ankles. In fact, a minimum of 10 minutes or 20 minutes of run- ning or stretching is required for the blood to be fully supplied to the muscles of the arms and legs.
But the reality is different. Most amateur golfers arrive at the golf course just before the tee off. At best, you can do simple bare- handed stretch for about a minute. In addition, they drink a cup of free coffee upon arrival, which causes dehydration, then results in a lack of blood to be delivered to the muscles. And the first swing on the first hole requires 100 percent driver use. Among golf swings, it is the most powerful and fastest head speed swing. Even a professional golfer can’t swing properly without sufficient blood supply to his arms, legs, shoulders, waist and legs.
So, when you go to a golf course and play rounds, you should take as much time as possible and go ahead and stretch your en- tire body carefully for at least 10 to 20 minutes, and get some sweat on your body by running in place. In fact, the PGA golfers I’m treating such as Choi Kyung-ju and other Tour players will arrive two hours before every match, stretching and warming up with a PGA-certified trainer for an hour, and participate in the first hole. If you haven’t gone to the golf course in advance, swing very carefully for the first one or two holes, with the goal of warming up and without thinking about the score. Whenever you have free time, you should run enough or stretch to prevent injury to your hips or back discs.
Greed ends up getting you angry. Everyone wants a driver shot of more than 250 yards from the first hole and an accurate long iron shot for second, but to do so, they have to give the blood stored in their bodies time to pump into their arms, legs and so on. It is

highly recommended that golf courses be delayed for 30 minutes to warm up enough or swing very carefully for 15 minutes right after the tee.
척추, 관절을 전문으로 하는 병원에서 일하다 보니 골프 를 치다가 허리를 삐끗해서 오는 환자가 상당히 많다. 라운딩을 한참 하다가 허리를 다쳐서 오는 경우도 있다. 그런 데 특이한 것은 그중에 상당수가 티오프를 한 직후 10~15분 이내의 1~2번 홀에서 발생한다는 사실이다. 대체로 1~2번 홀 에는 파3 홀이 없고 롱 홀인 파 4 혹은 5 홀이 있는데 이 홀에 서 드라이버, 우드, 하이브리드를 치다가 허리를 삐끗하는 경 우가 의외로 많다. 하필이면 왜 티오프 직후 15분에 이런 일 이 발생할까 ?
이것에 대한 해답을 찾기 위해서는 평상시와 운동을 할 때의 우리 몸에 어떤 차이가 있는 지 부터 알아야 한다. 평상시에 오 피스에 앉아 있거나 집에서 휴식을 취할때는 호흡과 혈액 순환 자체가 운동할 때와 많이 다르다. 우리가 안정을 취하고 있을 때 호흡은 분당 12~15회를 유지한다. 맥박도 분당 60~80회 가 평균이다. 안정시에는 우리 몸의 혈액순환은 주로 뇌와 심 장에만 산소와 영양분을 충분히 공급하고 나머지 팔다리의 근 육과 내장기관에는 피의 공급을 최소화 하고 있는 상태이다. 그리고 이제 운동을 시작하여 팔 다리에 있는 근육이 충분히 기능을 하려면 호흡, 맥박이 평소보다 최소 20% 최대 100% 로 상승해야한다. 골프스윙은특히목,어깨,팔,등,허리,엉 덩이, 다리, 발목까지 몸 전체의 근육을 다 쓰는 운동이기에 충 분한 워밍업이 필요한 것이다. 실제로 우리 몸의 혈액이 팔 다 리의 근육에 충분히 공급이 되려면 최소 10분~20분 정도의 뛰 기나 스트레칭이 반드시 요구된다.
하지만 현실은 다르다. 대부분의 아마추어 골퍼는 티오프 직 전에 골프장에 도착한다. 잘해야 간단한 맨손체조를 1분 정도 할 뿐이다. 게다가 도착하자마자 무료로 주는 커피 한 잔을 마 시는데 이것이 오히려 탈수를 유발하여 근육에 전달되어야 할 혈액이 오히려 모자르게 된다. 그리고 첫 번째 홀의 첫 스윙은 드라이버를 100% 써야 한다. 골프 스윙중에서 가장 힘이 많이 들어가고 헤드 스피드도 높은 스윙이다. 팔, 다리, 어깨, 허리, 다리에 충분한 혈액 공급이 되지 않은 상황에서는 설사 프로 골퍼라도 제대로 스윙을 할 수가 없다.
이렇게 몸이 전혀 안 풀린 상황에서 드라이버 스윙을 하면 근 육 섬유는 제대로 수축, 이완을 할수가 없고 원하는 힘과 탄력 을 받을수가 없기에 마치 라운드 티의 목이 늘어나듯이 근 섬 유의 부분적인 손상이 발생하게 된다. 그것이 바로 염좌이며 강한 통증으로 이어지게 된다. 이때 실제로 환자는 우지직하 는 소리를 듣기도 하는데 근 섬유가 늘어나면서 이것을 스스 로 치료하기 위해 그 부위는 즉시 그 안에서 붓게 된다. 이로
인해통증이발생하여뇌에전달되고이일련의과정은그부 위를 더이상 움직이기 못하게 하여 치유를 촉진하는 자기 방 어 기능이기도 하다.
따라서 골프장에 가서 라운딩을 할때는 최대한 시간을 넉넉하 게 잡고 미리 가서 최소한 10~20분 정도는 꼼꼼하게 몸 전체 를 스트레칭을 하고 제자리 뛰기 등으로 몸에 약간의 땀을 나 게 해야 한다. 실제로 필자가 치료하고 있는 최경주 프로등의 PGA 골퍼들은 모든 경기전 2시간 전에 도착하여 1시간 동안 PGA 공인 트레이너와 함께 스트레칭과 워밍업을 하고 첫번 째 홀로 출전한다. 만약 골프장에 미리 가지 못했다면 첫 1~2 홀은 스코어는 생각하지 않고 워밍업을 하는 것을 목표로 매 우 조심해서 스윙을 해야 한다. 시간이 날때 마다 제자리 뛰기 나 스트레칭을 충분히 하여 염좌 혹은 허리 디스크 등의 부상 을 방지해야 한다.
뭐든지 욕심이 화를 부른다. 누구나 첫 홀부터 250 야드 이상 의 드라이버 샷, 정확한 세컨드 롱 아이언 샷을 원하지만 그럴 려면 몸안에 저장되어 있는 혈액을 팔, 다리 등에 펌핑해서 보 낼 시간을 주어야 한다. 골프장에 30분 미리가서 워밍업을 충 분히 하거나 아니면 티오프 직후 15분간은 매우 조심해서 스윙 을 하는 것을 강력히 추천한다. GC
