TAF Launches Regel™ - Recycled Acrylic Fibre

We are happy to share with you that we have
launched a new brand called “Regel™”, a recycled
acrylic fibre. Regel™ is made from recycling acrylic
waste; it has also already received the Global
Recycled Standards or GRS certification.

We have developed this fibre as a result of growing
demand of sustainable fashion products from global
consumers, brands and retailers. Waste
accumulation and its management are the key
sustainability challenges in the fashion industry, and
therefore recycling pre-consumer, post-consumer
and in-process waste to create new products is one
of the most preferred and prevalent ways to reduce
the environmental impact.

“Regel™ is a unique innovation as it is one of the
first successful commercialization of acrylic fibre
produced by recycling the waste. The ideal for
Regel™ was conceptualized from our interaction
with the key fashion retailers who are seeking to
replace the conventional fibres with materials
which have a better sustainability index. We spent
1.5 years on extensive R&D to formulate the
process and technology for recycling acrylic waste”,
says Thomas Varghese, Business Head—Textile,
Aditya Birla Group.

Regel™ fibre is composed of 50% recycled waste and 50% virgin polymer, with potential to go even higher on the
recycled component. “The unique part of Regel™ technology is that it ensures the homogenous mixing of both
recycled & virgin polymer, while maintaining the quality and other functional benefits of acrylic fibre like warmth,
comfort, and vibrant shades. This is the key advantage of Regel™ fibre over other techniques like mechanical
shredding where there is a limitation on content, quality and color selection”, adds Siddhartha Chakrabarti, Chief
Research & Technology Officer, TAF.

Regel™ fibre is commercially available and produced at TAF’s plant in Saraburi

Production Technology Behind Regel™

As previously mentioned that we have launched our new recycled fibre brand “Regel™”. Now, the
question is what is the production technology behind Regel™ that makes it outstanding and unique than
others?

Regel™ technology was developed by TAF for making acrylic fibre by recycling acrylic waste—which has
been a major challenge until now. The waste is collected and freed from impurities through a scouring
process. The purified waste is dissolved in the solvent to prepare a waste dope, which is then mixed
with the fresh dope. Now, the ratio of waste and fresh dope can be adjusted per requirement.

Regel™ is made with a minimum 50% of waste dope content in the fibre. After the mixing, the mixed
dope is then passed through the spinneret to extrude the fibre.

The same production process of regular acrylic fibre follows, ensuring that the properties of acrylic like
warmth, vibrant shades, comfort, hand-feel etc. are intact in Regel™ fibre.
