President’s Message

Dear Rake & Hoe Members -

I hope everyone had a wonderful
summer-and that you all are just as
excited about the upcoming Rake and
Hoe year as I am! It is my honor to
serve as the President of Rake and
Hoe (even during a global pandemic)
and as always I look forward to all
that the club is going to do! The gift
bags for the veterans that Rake and
Hoe does are one of my favorite
projects. As we all work side by side
in the coming months, I want to hear
what you enjoy about Rake and Hoe.
I also want to express my appreciation
for the Board and for each and every
member as we transcend the
difficulties that the world is facing.
Despite the challenges these times
present to all of us, I am confident
that we will meet them!

With my best wishes for the year,

Jeanne Marie

“I've always felt that having a garden
is like having a good and loyal
friend.” C. Z. Guest

COMMUNITY SERVICE
PROJECTS

Rake & Hoe sponsors many activities for the
benefit of club members, the local community,
state, and the environment. These projects
serve as a means for extending and applying
the missions of the GCNJ and NGC. The
projects embody these goals by educating
members and the public, and provide a means
for contributing to the greater gardening and
environmental good.

Bird of the Year
Black-capped Chickadee
Poecile atricapillus
I (Order: Passeriformes, Family:Paridae)

The black-capped chickadee, considered “cute”
thanks to its oversized round head, tiny body, and
curiosity about everything, including humans, is four
to five inches in length with a wingspan of six to
seven inches. It is gray on its upper sides and tail and
has a black cap and throat bib, white cheeks, a white
chest and belly, and light brown flanks right below its
wing. Chickadees are omnivores, and their diet varies
primarily based on the season. A social bird that lives
in flocks, they are one of the easiest to attract to
feeders, for suet, sunflower, and peanuts. The
chickadee hides seeds and other food items to eat
later. Each item is placed in a different spot and the
chickadee can remember thousands of hiding places.
Nest site is in holes in trees, typically an enlargement
of small natural cavity in rotten wood. Generally
permanent residents, central NJ is the lower range of
habitat which reaches into Canada. Planting willow,
alder, and birch trees provides future nesting habitat
for chickadees. Chickadee calls are complex and
language like, communicating information on identity
and recognition of other flocks as well as predator
alarms and contact calls. The more "dee" notes in a
chickadee-dee-dee call, the higher the threat level.
Thirteen distinct types of chickadee vocalizations
have been classified.
