A CHANGE IN ACTION

A CHANGE IN ACTION
It is very often quoted that ‘Knowledge is not power, it becomes power only when used.’ Having knowledge
alone without acting on them will not bring about any change. The change in thinking has to be translated
into actions. It is through actions that measurable results can be observed. However, putting words into
actions is often easier said than done. There may be obstacles and hindrances but with the investment
of patience and perseverance plus time and energy actions can be taken and change can be realised.
The year 2012 and 2013 saw several actions taken by the institution to change the physical landscape,
to upgrade the facilities and infrastructure and to empower the staff and students of the Seberang Perai
Polytechnic through an array of activities.

Building of the Wardrobe House
An action taken to ensure comfort and
convenience was the building of a Wardrobe
House opposite the Dewan Seri Mutiara in 2012.
The building housed the convocation gowns and

collection during convocation. The action taken
had reduced the amount of time usually spend
in handing over and collecting of robes to the
graduates during convocation, hence increasing
efficiency in the process involved.
Improving ICT Infrastructure: Preparation
and Delegation of Computers
In 2012, personal computers were provided by the
Information Management Unit, Ministry of Higher
Education Malaysia, through a centralized rental
contract. As the first consignment, Seberang Perai
Polytechnic received a total of 288 computers and
they were distributed accordingly to departments
and units involved. This brought about positive
changes in providing up-to-date computer facilities
in polytechnic.

On 14 June 2012, a MOU was signed by PSP and
AK Academy. PSP Director, Hj. Zulkifli bin Ariffin,
Pn Norlia bt Zakaria the Manager of (COT) and En.
Abdul Aziz bin Ishak, the Assistant Manager of COT
signed the MOU on behalf of PSP.
According to the MOU, AK Academy would provide
professional courses to Logistics and Supply Chain
students who have finished their final semester.
The value-added course would be conducted to
enable students to compete in the job market as
students would be given the Associate Logistic
Members (ALogM) status. With this status,
PSP students would have a better chance and
confidence to enter the job market.
The collaboration between AK Academy and PSP
had opened up many programmes that developed
and strengthened students’ competencies in
their field of study. This would make graduates
of the Logistics Management and Supply Chain
programme more employable and marketable.

Graduate Employability Programme and Finishing School
The implementation of Polytechnics Employability Programme was introduced by the Department of
Polytechnic Education (JPP) in 2010. Final semester students and unemployed polytechnic graduates
were the target group for the programme. The objective of the programme was to help the target group
to obtain additional skills after graduating from the polytechnics. It was hoped that this programme will
assist polytechnics’ graduates to find suitable jobs related to their qualifications.
Starting from 2010, the Seberang Perai Polytechnic (PSP) was involved in the Graduate Employability
Programme. The target group were given suitable courses to enable them to have additional knowledge
and skills to be a competent and capable person after they graduated.
In 2010, PSP received RM68,544 from JPP. PSP collaborated with Tuanku Sultanah Bahiyah Polytechnic
(PTSB), Kulim and Balik Pulau Polytechnic (PBU), Pulau Pinang to offer softskills courses. A total of 2,936
students benefited in this programme in the year 2010. In 2011, PSP received RM1,234,500. The amount

A CHANGE IN SPIRITS

A CHANGE IN SPIRITS
In reaching out to the skies of success, one must not lose sight of the ground he is leaping on. The
change made to achieve the desired goal of success, fame or richness, should not weaken traditions,
erode values and dampen spirits. Change should take place to bring gains and not pains, to earn dignity
and not lose credibility, to lessen anxiety and increase integrity. In short change is sought to turn the
better to best.
Change should take place according to the norms, values, beliefs and sense conformed. Thus self-
disciplined becomes integral. Discipline should be cultivated to build that character which complies with
the norms and values. Hence at the Seberang Perai Polytechnic, efforts were made to create a balance
between values conformance and pursuance of excellence. Students and staff alike were immersed
in activities that developed them as well balanced individuals, physically, emotionally, socially and
spiritually.

A CHANGE IN CULTURE
Enculturation of positive work ethics in an organization helps to develop a sense of togetherness
in achieving common goals set by the organisation. Differences in ideologies and beliefs should not
hinder progress and productivity at work. People in the organization communicate, function, share and
contribute as a team exhibiting first class mentality, avoiding silo mentality. People learn to share, take
risks and bear consequences together. An organization that is able to create a positive ambience where
people enjoy to work would be able to increase its performance. When people learn, unlearn and relearn
they make changes and improve themselves, continually and with that they produce better results.
The Seberang Perai Polytechnic exposed its staff to other working environments through benchmarking
visits and industrial visits. The benchmarking visits to Politeknik Manufaktur (POLMAN) and Politeknik
