THE BOSS I would like to welcome the Alinson’s to the AEI stadium this afternoon, for what will be another big game for us, it’s coming to the business end of the season, and one thing we are definitely looking to improve is our performances at home, we were left disappointed and I’m sure everyone was disappointed after the Hanwell game, we felt we missed an opportunity that day…..but what we did do was to react positively and we came back strong at Harrow. There was a lot of sole searching after that game, and hopefully we are going to use that as a springboard for us all, we need to show our fans, the shirt and the local community, that we are committed and I thought we did that against Harrow. We have another opportunity this afternoon, against s team that have also had an inconsistent season, like us they have had their challenges with team availability, so it’s important for both teams, it’s going to be a really tough game. We want to provide an entertaining performance and give our crowd something to get behind, because it’s been tough for them, we are well aware of that. We will keep rolling our sleeves up and keep fighting, when you are down it’s seems that nothing goes in your favour, but we are certainly not down about it and we will confront any issues and look to go forward. Thanks for your support, thanks for staying with us and we hope to repay you today… Mark Molesley MARK MOLESLEY DIRECTOR OF FOOTBALL GOSPORT BOROUGH FOOTBALL CLUB 5
THE CHAIRMAN from Thank you all for turning out today in support of our SPL encounter with Hendon FC. We extend a warm welcome to the players officials and supporters who may have made the trip to support the Greens here today and hope they enjoy their visit a good game and a safe journey home. As disappointed as you must’ve all been after the anaemic performance against Hanwell Town being candid I travelled to Harrow Boro with less than ideal confidence and expectation for one of the several critical matches with teams engulfed in the struggle to climb away from the trap door. I’m relieved and pleased to report back that the performance we put in was possibly our most professional and assured of this disappointing season and we came away with a well deserved 3 points and a clean sheet. A result we must build upon today against one of the in form sides in the division on a run that has propelled them up but not clear of danger. 3 points today will be hard earned but we have the quality to win them with the right attitude and endeavour. At this time of the season we’d normally be engaged on planning for next season and not be dragged into the chaotic end of season jiggery pokery that unfolds with movement of players and last minute squad rebuilding. Clearly despite our inner confidence that we will prevail in our efforts to maintain SPL status it’s less than helpful to have some reasonable doubt. The squad retains a nucleus of talented and youthful players indeed some of whom have been our most consistent performers this year and we aim to hold onto and build upon that nucleus in similar fashion. In a season where many of our issues have revolved around the loss of experience for numerous reasons leading to continuous changes to team selection and the resultant erratic form it implies that is one facet of the squad that requires special attention. Briefly I’d like to address the noise level amongst some regarding loans. We kicked off the season with a squad of 22 players and not one single loan. Our budget was definitely competitive enough for play offs if not in top three. That investment failed to produce reflective performance however it’s a factor of contracted players that same investment is fixed therefore spent. Unless players leave voluntarily or otherwise the costs remain regardless of form or fitness. Apart from the inherent difficulty in recruiting good players and dealing with continually rising wage demands our particular geographic positioning makes for a very limited market place with few clubs at our level to approach. We also as a result have likely the highest wages being paid by clubs in lower leagues right on our doorstep added into the mix. Therefore the loan market affords the only real option and is hardly teaming with talent albeit we have used that option mostly well and which is crucial right now. I can also reveal that we will end the season as a result with a higher wage bill than we started…..who’d be a chairman!! Enjoy the game have fun and stay safe. 9 TWO MORE FOR BORO Gosport Borough manager Mark Molesley boosted his squad ahead of the closing of the transfer window with the capture last week of Charlie Wassmer and Max Kinsey-Wellings. Wassmer joins the club on loan from fellow Pitching In Southern League Premier Division outfit Hayes and Yeading and needs no introduction to Boro fans following a spell with the club in 2017. Wassmer has a wealth of experience at Conference National level and can boast appearances with Cambridge United, Crawley Town, Fleetwood Town and Dagenham and Redbridge. Although more recently he featured for Hampton and Richmond Borough, before rejoining Hayes where he started his career. Kinsey-Wellings arrives at the club from AFC Bournemouth of the Premier League and has also featured in the Academy set-ups at both Chelsea and Southampton. Both made their debuts in last Saturday’s 2-0 victory away at Harrow Borough. Against Discrimination We pledge to tackle racism, homophobia and any type of discrimination in order to make Privett Park a safe and welcoming place for all. Gosport Borough Football Club will also not tolerate any form of discrimination published on Social Media platforms and consider taking legal action where possible. COVID-19 Whilst restrictions may have ceased, Gosport Borough Football Club is still requesting all spectators to show respect to others during the ongoing pandemic, thus ensuring everybody enjoys their day. Keep up to date with all of the live sporting action away from the AEI Stadium, on the large screens before, during and after today's game. STAY AFTER THE GAME and continue to soak up the atmosphere whatever the matchday result!
FORMED HENDON TODAY’S VISITORS the GREENS Having looked dead on certs for relegation at Christmas, a fine current run of seven games undefeated in all competitions has impacted their league standing in a positive fashion and as we enter the final month of the campaign, Hendon find themselves in a strong position, some five points clear of North Leigh and with a good chance of preserving their Premier League status that they have held since way back in 1977. With the trip to Tiverton Town falling foul of the weather on Wednesday evening, Hendon picked up a priceless 1-0 victory over Hartley Wintney last Saturday and over the course of March defeated Merthyr Town and Plymouth Parkway that boosted their bid for survival. However, a relegation scrap is not something associated with the North London outfit. A grand old lady of non-league football, Hendon were formed in 1908 as Christ Church Hampstead before later acquiring the name Golders Green until picking up their current moniker in 1946 when they became members of the highly thought of Athenian League. The 1950s and 1960s proved to be a halcyon period for the club, three Athenian League Championships were collected as well as two FA Amateur Cup triumphs in 1960, over Kingstonian and again in 1965 with a victory over Whitby. The period also saw two ventures into the first round proper of the FA Cup and eventual promotion into the Isthmian League, a competition they won in 1965. The 1970s were just as successful, another Amateur Cup victory was garnered with victory over Enfield and yet another Isthmian League title was picked up, a record FA Cup run in 1974 saw Newcastle United being taken to a third round replay. The club slowly declined through the 80s and 90s with the nadir being the loss of their Clarence Park home in 2008. Currently groundsharing with Edgware Town, this season will become a case of keeping themselves in the Premier Division as the campaign draws to its close. The Magpies, who boasted Malcolm MacDonald, Terry McDermott and Frank Clark in their side that day were held 1-1 by Hendon who at the time were members of the Isthmian Division One in front of 33,840. A header from Pat Howard gave The Toon a lead which they took with them into the break. Hendon rallied in the second half and found their equaliser, Rod Haider beating Willie McFaul from close range, with the Londoners managing to hold onto the draw. The replay saw Newcastle triumph 4-0 at Watford’s Vicarage Road Stadium four days later in front of 15,385 as they were on their way to the final, only to be defeated 3-0 by Liverpool at Wembley. Hendon had won at Wembley the previous spring in the FA Amateur Cup Final, would finish runners up to Wycombe Wanderers in that season’s Isthmian League topflight. FORM GUIDE

SOUTHERN LEAGUE ROUND-UP 25/03/23 NEWS DESK Last weekend saw Bracknell Town enter the race for automatic promotion as a 2-0 away win at struggling Yate Town took The Robins to within six points of league leaders Westonsuper-Mare with a game in hand. A thirty-eighth minute effort from Adam Richards got the Berkshire club on the scoresheet and a second was added five minutes following the break through Joseph Grant. League leaders Weston saw their nervous run continue as they slipped to a shock 2-0 defeat at relegation threatened North Leigh with Jack Alexander and Conor McDonough on the mark for the Oxfordshire based outfit who now move to within five points of safety, having looked all but doomed just a matter of weeks ago. Truro City saw their fixture fall foul of the weather, whilst Metropolitan Police kept alive their slim chances of a play-off berth with a 1-0 win over Chesham United who’s current run of form will be making them look nervously over their shoulders. The Generals who appeared as good as shoe-ins for a top five finish are now just five points clear of sixth game Swindon having played a game more and were downed at Imber Court by a Martell Taylor-Crossdale effort. Swindon meanwhile kept up their playoff charge with a convincing 3-1 win away at Hanwell Town with Harry Williams, James Harding and Henry Spalding all on target for the Wiltshire club. Poole Town’s fine run of form sees no end as they effectively ended Hayes & Yeading United’s promotion aspirations with a 2-1 win at The Black and Gold Stadium. Coming from behind after Daniel Green had given Hayes an early lead, goals from James Whisken and Marcus Davis in the last ten minutes of the first half sealed the points. At the foot of the table Gosport Borough compounded Harrow Borough’s woes with a comfortable 2-0 victory at Earlsmead. Goals in either half from Brett Williams and Harvey Rew earned Mark Molesley’s men a much needed win that takes them six points clear of trouble. Winchester remain one point ahead of The Boro after a 4-0 win over the season’s surprise package Beaconsfield Town, Simbarashe Miambo bagging a brace, whilst elsewhere in midtable Merthyr Town scored a 2-0 victory away at Dorchester Town. With all of Wednesday’s fixtures falling foul of the weather, including Bracknell’s trip to Truro City, the game of midweek saw Chesham United and top of the table Weston meet in Buckinghamshire. A late Lloyd Humphries strike saved a point for The Seagulls after Jeanmal Prospoer had handed United a seventieth minute lead in a result that did neither side any favours. 18 EVERY SO often in Non-League football something will spark a new major talking point. Last week it was the revelation from the PFA warning players about changes to player contracts from July 1 that they say they can’t support. However, the PFA don’t have an agreement in place to represent Non-League footballers. In case you missed it, here’s the rundown. The FA is introducing a document that National League System clubs wanting to place players on contract must now sign. It comes into effect this summer, specifically from July 1. Minimum conditions will apply to all new contracts, as well as renewed ones – including extensions. In a statement, the FA explained it has updated the arrangement ‘to better reflect current employment legislation and to provide each party with greater certainty.’ The NLP understands that the existing contract, which has been used for some time, no longer complies with UK employment law. Lawyers hired by the game’s governing body, in addition to others consulted for a second and separate opinion, both concluded that it needed amending to protect against legal challenges. The big focus as been on injured players. Under the new contract, if a player suffers an injury while playing, they will only receive their full wages for 12 weeks at Step 1, and six weeks if playing at Step 2 or below. If the player is still ill or injured after this initial period on full wages, the club can reduce their wages to Statutory Sick Pay – a little over £99 per week – until they are fit again. In addition, a contract can be terminated, with three months’ notice, if in the opinion of a club-instructed medic the player is unable to play for a period of four months. Every contracted player will also be entitled to receive holiday pay, awarded prorata if they are not engaged for a full calendar year. Those on a 39-week deal would be entitled the equivalent of four weeks’ leave. A lot of the focus has been on the injury aspect of the new contract. A reminder, clubs must conform to the minimum standards when they sign a player on contract. However, they can offer to continue paying players in full if they sustain an injury – much as they do now. For that to happen, players ‘opt in’ to the arrangement by ticking a box. Macclesfield, on course to be promoted to the Northern Premier League’s top flight this season, have already said they will do exactly that. Boreham Wood have expressed support for players too and it will be interesting to see how the game reacts as time goes on. National League players have quickly mobilised, impressively so. Yeovil Town captain Josh Staunton gathered the 24 Step 1 captains into a WhatsApp group and they’ve released a statement calling for talks on the situation. Their stance has garnered support from their peers and, on social media, fans seem to have their backs. Staunton told us: “In the League we’d have the PFA. Unfortunately we don’t have anyone so we had to make sure we had togetherness or else it would get dismissed really quickly and we’d be bowing down to something we don’t believe in. Ultimately, as a person, you have to stand up for what you believe in, don’t you?” So, what are the likely consequences? One immediate and obvious impact is on clubs’ wage bills – well, those with contracted players who are now entitled to holiday pay. The more players they have on deals, the more money they must find. It remains to be seen if that leads to fewer contracts being offered. Ironically, should that happen, there would be an increase in non-contract players who have even fewer rights and benefits. Competitions that make up the National League System, together with the Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) and the Football Supporters’ Association (FSA), were consulted by the governing body on the changes. It means officials have been able to warn clubs they were coming, and to prepare. Northern Premier League chairman Mark Harris has urged clubs to think carefully before deciding how they will adjust to changes in the contracts. He said: “We can help by passing on information, but we can’t give legal advice. Like any businesses, clubs have to seek their own. And that’s how it should be; every player is different, and so is every negotiation. “The PFA was closely involved in discussions up to the point of launch, and it’s since made its position clear. “It remains to be seen how many clubs use the discretion they have to go above and beyond the minimum standards attached to the new contract.” It seems this story will run for a while yet.

Coming off the back of a 2-0 defeat against Gosport at the weekend and managerless following Steve Baker’s departure a week prior this became a must win game for harrow who now lie six points adrift of local rivals Hendon in eighteenth position. It would be Dorchester, who had not so long a go been challenging for a play-off berth before a blip in form, that took the lead five minutes shy of the break when Shaquille Gwengwe planted a low shot past Jason Knightbridge from the penalty spot. Nine minutes after the break it was 2-0, Gwengwe again on the scoresheet as he netted once more from the spot having himself been fouled in the area. Harrow though look keen to fight for their survival and made a game out of it when Johnny Allotey halved the deficit with twenty minutes to go. An equaliser wasn’t forthcoming and Harrow find themselves in all manner of trouble with five games still remaining. 19 PITCHING IN SOUTHERN LEAGUE PREMIER DIVISION SOUTH Pld W D L F A GD Pts 1 Weston-super-Mare 36 24 7 5 78 28 50 79 2 Truro City 35 22 8 5 72 33 39 74 3 Bracknell Town 34 22 6 6 84 44 40 72 4 Poole Town 37 19 11 7 72 47 25 68 5 Chesham United 37 19 10 8 72 50 22 67 6 Swindon Supermarine 36 18 8 10 73 58 15 62 7 Metropolitan Police 36 18 7 11 56 45 11 61 8 Hayes & Yeading United 35 17 7 11 66 49 17 58 9 Merthyr Town 37 16 6 15 63 54 9 54 10 Beaconsfield Town 37 14 11 12 63 57 6 53 11 Plymouth Parkway 34 14 7 13 54 50 4 49 12 Dorchester Town 37 14 5 18 48 66 -18 47 13 Tiverton Town 34 12 8 14 54 62 -8 44 14 Salisbury 36 13 5 18 46 58 -12 44 15 Hanwell Town 37 12 6 19 46 58 -12 42 16 Winchester City 36 9 12 15 46 62 -16 39 17 Gosport Borough 37 11 5 21 52 72 -20 38 18 Hendon 35 9 10 16 50 63 -13 37 19 North Leigh 37 9 5 23 43 76 -33 32 20 Harrow Borough 37 7 10 20 37 72 -35 31 21 Hartley Wintney 37 7 7 23 36 70 -34 28 22 Yate Town 37 7 7 23 43 80 -37 28
