Unit 6 adjectives
DESCRIPTIVE ADJECTIVES are used to describe nouns and pronouns.
▪ Words like beautiful, cute, silly, tall, annoying, loud and nice are all descriptive
adjectives. These adjectives add information and qualities to the words they’re
modifying.

QUANTITATIVE ADJECTIVES describe the quantity of something.
▪ In other words, they answer the question “how much?” or “how many?”
Numbers like one and thirty are this type of adjective. So are more general
words like many, half and a lot.

DISTRIBUTIVE ADJECTIVES describe specific members out of a group.
These adjectives are used to single out one or more individual items or people. Some
of the most common distributive adjectives include:
Each Every single one of a group (used to speak about group members
individually).

Either One between a choice of two.
Neither Not one or the other between a choice of two.
Any One or some things out of any number of choices. This is also used when
the choice is irrelevant, like: ”it doesn’t matter, I’ll take any of them.”

An adverb is a word that modifies (describes) a verb (he sings loudly), an adjective
(very tall), another adverb (ended too quickly), or even a whole sentence (Fortunately,

III. Rule 3: When two or more singular subjects are joined by or or nor, use a
singular verb. If one subject is singular and one is plural, the verb agrees with

IV. Sometimes phrases other than prepositional ones follow the subject. Usually
they are set off by commas and are introduced by words and phrases like
including, with, in addition to, together with, as well as, or accompanied by.
The subject cannot be found in any of these phrases. Therefore, cross out any
phrase set off by commas. Then locate the subject and agree the verb with the
subject.

V. Some nouns that are singular in form name a group of people or things: class,
family, team, group, flock, for example. These nouns are called collective
nouns.
Examples: The jury was dismissed by the judge.
The class has decided to have a science table in the room.
The family is coming for dinner.

VI. A title, organization, or country, even when plural in form, usually takes a
singular verb.
Example: ”Murders in the Rue Morgue” is an intriguing mystery.
