What
is
obesity?
Obesity is a medical condition, often considered a
disease, in which excessive body fat accumulates to
such a degree that it may be detrimental to health.
People are considered obese if their body mass
index (BMI) is more than 30 kg/m2, which is
calculated by dividing their weight by the square of
their height; the range of 25–30 kg/m2 is considered
overweight. Some East Asian nations calculate
obesity using lower numbers. Obesity is a leading
cause of disability and is associated with a number
of illnesses and ailments, including cardiovascular
disease, type 2 diabetes, obstructive sleep apnea,
some cancers, and osteoarthritis.

How does obesity affect in
workplace?
#A
Absenteeism
It is obvious that individuals leave work whenever they are sick. Obesity also implies
illness, as it leads to major health problems. As a result, if your employees are
obese, they are more likely to visit the doctor or pout at home owing to lethargy or
exhaustion. This eventually leads to sick leave being used frequently.
#B
Presenteeism
Absenteeism is simple: employees just take time off and stay at home. Worse,
employees that arrive to work with unproductive. In contrast, presenteeism is when
an employee is sick but still comes to work. In these cases, they struggle with their
task because they are unable to execute it efficiently owing to illness. In the end,
the corporation suffers. This plainly implies that obesity brings the organization
down with it, as well as the employee.
#C
Productivity
Obese workers are less energetic and efficient at work and at home than non-obese
workers. The reasoning is straightforward. Obese people will have slower work
outcomes because they are tired most of the time and have high blood pressure on
occasion. Finally, decreased personnel productivity means decreased overall firm
production. And when no one is working, work gets stagnant.

#D
Higher Healthcare Costs
Because of increased medical expenditures, addressing obesity in the workplace has
become a type of mandate. Employers today are concerned about their employees'
health, which has resulted in the implementation of wellness programmes.Given the
significant healthcare costs associated with a large number of sick workers, this is
self-evident. Obesity is frequently associated with a plethora of other health issues.
Employees who are ill require company-sponsored medical care. Not to mention the
hefty workers' compensation claims.
#E
Healthy risk
Obesity increases the risk for the following health conditions.
High blood pressure and high cholesterol which are risk factors for heart disease.
Type 2 diabetes.
Breathing problems, such as asthma and sleep apnea.
Joint problems such as osteoarthritis and musculoskeletal discomfort.
Gallstones and gallbladder disease.

WAYS TO DEAL WITH OBESITY IN THE
WORKPLACE
Consume healthy fat
Fat is an essential component of our diet and aids the body in storing certain nutrients.
Unsaturated fat from food, also known as polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fat can improve
cholesterol levels and lower the risk of illness.
Good fat sources include fish, nuts, and seeds, which can sustain nerve impulse transmission, memory
storage, and tissue structure
Consume less bad fat and more good fat.
Increase physical activity
It is essential to incorporate regular physical exercise into your routine if you want to maintain or
lose weight.
The combination of burning calories through physical activity and eating fewer calories results in a
"calorie deficit" which leads to weight reduction.
For instance: we aim for at least 150 minutes per week of moderate-intensity aerobic activity such as
biking, swimming, and jogging.
Thus, physical activity reduces the risks of cardiovascular disease and diabetes beyond those
produced by weight reduction alone
Follow the sleep schedule
A healthy adult should get at least seven hours of sleep every night.
Good sleep habits can improve attentiveness at school or work, improve mental, and enhance general
life quality.
We should go to bed and get up at the same time every day to strengthen our body sleep-wake cycle,
Avoid caffeine, alcohol, nicotine, and other chemicals that interfere with sleep
Relieve stress
It is because chronic stress causes weight gain by increasing levels of the stress hormone cortisol.
Adults who participated in an eight-week stress management programme that included deep
breathing and guided visualisation lost considerably more weight. (Xenaki et al., 2018)
Example: Go for a daily walk, join in regular yoga or tai chi, listen to beloved music, get together with
friends
We should create a restful environment and maintain a cheerful attitude at all times to release
stress
Prepare meal
When trying to mantain a healthy diet, it is always advisable to prepare our own meals.
Choose minimally processed, unprocessed foods such as whole grains, vegetables, fruits, nuts, and
protein-rich meals.
For example, we can eat wheat biscuits with milk and yogurt
When we prepare the meal ourselves, we can reduce the we spend eating out time
