RADM Moira N. Flanders, USN (Ret.)
February is a month of renewal, remembrance, relationships, and recognition. It brings
us the Lunar New Year, the birthdays of Presidents George Washington and Abraham Secretary
Lincoln, Valentine’s Day, and Black History Month. BG Malinda E. Dunn, USA (Ret.)
As detailed elsewhere in The Dispatch, February is a busy month for activities at your
Club. Sunday Buffets and Tuesday Night Seafood Buffets are in full swing, book forums Treasurer
continue both in-person and virtually, and a Gala Dinner and themed Sunday Brunch LTG Larry R. Jordan, USA (Ret.)
will help members celebrate Valentine’s Day. We will offer Family Bingo and a Military
Comedy Night, as well as the very popular Chef ’s Table. House Committee, Chair
Throughout the month, the Club will recognize the contributions of Black Americans. Col Eugene P. Gay, USAF (Ret.)
Thanks to the generosity of Club member Levi Howze and the hard work of the Library Special Events Committee, Chair
Trust, we will host an exhibit of paintings by contemporary Black American artist Hebru Lt Col John H. La Raia, USAFR (Ret.)
Brantley.
February also brings Groundhog Day. The COVID pandemic has been a Groundhog Finance Committee, Chair
Day experience for many, although more in the manner of the Bill Murray movie than CDR Christopher P. Thomas, USN (Ret.)
Punxsutawney Phil. The past two years has been a repeat of closures, cancellations, and
postponements. But you should know your Club has been resilient and our patronage Membership Committee, Chair
and membership numbers remain strong. I am frustrated by the renewal of the DC mask
mandate and the implementation of a proof of vaccination requirement, but we must com- COL Michael Kirby, USA (Ret.)
ply with the rules and we will get through those challenges. I ask for your good natured Governor
compliance and patience.
On a happy note, thank you for your contributions to the Employee Holiday Fund. We Lt Col Euseekers Williams Jr., USMC (Ret.)
had the highest number and amount of contributions in the history of the Fund. This is Governor
a testament to the generosity of our members and to the quality of our professional staff.
Our employees are loyal and long-serving. (I recently signed a congratulatory card to Miss MAJ Miranda Summers Lowe, USA

Thank you for your membership. I look forward to seeing you around the Clubhouse.

A LETTER FROM THE

GENERAL MANAGER
Ms. Sarah M. Ford, CHAE

[email protected]

The month of February is looking bright at the Club and I don’t mean that figuratively. The lighting project to increase our
energy efficiency by upgrading to LED fixtures is complete. The most notable area of improvement is on the B1 Level and more
specifically the Eagle Grill. The improvements are spectacular, and I’d like to invite you to have a meal or a drink in the Eagle
Grill to see the new lighting for yourself. (We even added some fresh paint to make it really pop.)
Rain, snow, or sunshine, February is a special month at the Club. Our Valentine’s Day Gala is always a highlight, but we have
other ways to celebrate the most romantic month of the year. Don your best red or pink attire and join us for the Sweetheart
Sunday Brunch or our Galantine’s Day Happy Hour where we will be featuring the “Pink Lady” cocktail and other specials in
the Daiquiri Lounge.
Switching gears, I want to share a reminder about the DC Mayor’s Office Order 2021-148 which became effective on January
15th. This Order requires certain establishments and facilities, including private clubs, operating in the District of Columbia
to require guests (ages 12 years or older) entering their indoor premises to present proof of vaccination against COVID-19. In
order for the Club to remain open and maintain our business operation and liquor licenses in the District of Columbia, we are
subject to this Order. The Order does include certain medical and religious exemptions. The full order can be found by visiting
https://coronavirus.dc.gov.
If you would like to share your thoughts regarding Mayoral Order 2021-148, you are encouraged to contact the Office of the
Mayor, Muriel Bowser, at [email protected] or by phone (202) 727-2643.
I would like to thank you all for the immense support these past two years as General Manager. It has been and continues to
be a challenging role with many rewarding experiences. Your words of encouragement during the good times and bad have
been a great source of strength. As we continue forward and face together whatever is thrown at us next, I promise to continue
to uphold and support this incredible institution that is The Army and Navy Club for all of you, the best membership in the
history of Clubs!

A LETTER FROM THE

DIRECTOR OF FINANCE

Ms. Raquel Tapia

[email protected]

To Our Dear Members,

On behalf of all ANC staff, I would like to express our deepest gratitude for your continued support to our
Club and to your generous donations to the Employee Holiday Funds. The funds that we have collected
were allocated to staff in time for the holiday season and I know that this has brought much joy to our
employees and their families.

As we look ahead in 2022, we are seeing the Omicron variant causing the increase in daily cases. Please
be assured that we are doing everything possible to ensure that we provide you and your guests with a safe
place to dine in. We hope that this pandemic will end soon and we can return to normal. We can't wait to
be of service to you this year.

Again, thank you for your donations and continued support, and we wish you a happy and healthy 2022!

Best,
Raquel Tapia

BLACK HISTORY MONTHTHE LIBRARY TRUST // BLACK HISTORY MONTH EXHIBITION HEBRU

EXHIBITION

The Library Trust is pleased to invite you to an intimate exhibition of two works by the celebrated contemporary

artist Hebru Brantley, courtesy of Club member Levi Howze and GLH Galleries in Houston, Texas. The opening
reception will be in the Ballroom on Thursday, February 3, from 6pm-8pm, with brief remarks around 7pm.

This is something of a landmark event at the Club, as the first art exhibition in celebration of Black History Month
and in honor of the history of service among African Americans in the U.S. military. The Library Trust has been
working to enhance its collection and programming with a more inclusive and accurate portrait of military ser-

vice through art and book acquisitions, including the recently acquired portrait of Colonel
Charles Young on view outside the Main Dining Room and the ongoing display of the
General Benjamin O. Davis, Jr. maquette in the main lobby. This exhibition is the next
chapter in this ongoing effort.

Hebru Brantley is a prominent contemporary American artist.
He creates work inspired by a diverse array of popular culture, graf-
fiti culture, and American history, featuring a cast of conceptualized

iconic characters - including his famous “Fly Boy,” inspired by
the Tuskegee Airmen. “Fly Boy” (a play on “flyboy” and
the slang term “fly,” meaning “cool”) was created
in response to the lack of characters of color
within the popular culture of Brantley’s
youth. The character is a small cartoon-
ish boy wearing aviator goggles and a
leather pilot helmet, iconifying the
Tuskegee airmen into a kind of fic-
tional protagonist that one might see
in a cartoon. “Lord of the Flys,” one

To Quote The Artist:“

BRANTLEY“ What I wanted to do was create that [character],
but in a space of high art and be able to have some
historical context to that character. So, I looked at the
Tuskegee Airmen, who were fighter pilots in World War
II. They flew successful missions and they never lost a
person. But at that time black folks were treated far less

than equal. For me, it was important to have that
historical context to a character.

Collectors of Brantley’s work include
LeBron James, Jay-Z and Beyonce, Lenny
Kravitz, George Lucas, and Rahm Emanuel. He
has collaborated with brands like Nike, Hublot, and Adidas. In October 2019, Brantley opened an
experiential fine art installation fueled by the narrative of his characters Flyboy and Lil Mama (both
characters are featured in our exhibition). The 6,000-square-foot installation in Chicago’s Pilsen neigh-
borhood hosted over 23,000 guests. Brantley currently resides in Los Angeles where he is expanding
into content creation including the adaptation of the Flyboy Universe through his media company,
Angry Hero.

We thank everyone who so generously
supported The Library Trust over the
holiday season through end-of-year
donations. Thanks to your generosity,
we exceeded the number of individual
gifts of any prior year. Your continued
support and engagement is a testament
to the importance of military history
and community. In an era of great un-
certainty, you have given us so much -
your time, your support, and your input
about how our Club can better serve
our community through these unusual
times. You have inspired our Club to
become nimbler and more resilient - to
increase our digital reach, to harness our
convening power for virtual conversations, and to celebrate military culture and history. The Library Trust is
better today because of you. I am grateful for you - as are all of us at The Army and Navy Club.
