A LETTER FROM THE
HOUSE COMMITTEE CHAIRMAN
LTG Larry R. Jordan, USA (Ret.)
Fellow Club Members,
During these unprecedented and trying times, your Club deeply appreciates your continued support and patronage. The past few
months have provided us the opportunity to not only offer new, and hopefully enjoyable initiatives, such as the various virtual programs
and presentations and our grab-and-go menu options, but also to begin some needed infrastructure projects.
A major undertaking has been to replace components of the HVAC and air distribution systems to ensure proper heating, cooling, and
air circulation throughout the Club. This project was initiated prior to the current COVID-19 concerns, but is now even more important
as we learn the value of proper and efficient air handling and air exchange rates in combating the spread of the virus.
The next phase of the upgrades will occur in late January 2021 and be more obvious to members visiting the Club. That work will cause
disruptions in the Lobby and Main Dining Room for hopefully no more than a few days. The completed work will provide enhanced
comfort and air safety. Your understanding during the work will be greatly appreciated.
Other work to be performed concerning the Main Dining Room will be initiated in response to the civil unrest the downtown DC area has
experienced. While the Club has excellent relations with the community, and has sustained no damage or threats, we have begun to
upgrade many aspects of security. A Security Sub-Committee has been established and future updates will be provided. However, one
resulting project is nearing execution. The large windows in the Main Dining Room will be covered with clear and unobtrusive ballistic
impact film. The purpose of the film is to maintain window integrity if struck by various objects. This will prevent flying glass if struck,
which could cause injury, and to prevent easy access or openings through which to toss dangerous objects. The film will not obstruct
views or detract from the windows’ appearance.
Your House Committee, in concert with the other committees established by the Board of Governors, continues to strive to ensure your
Club maintains the highest standards of service and facilities. In that regard, your suggestions and comments are always welcomed.

A LETTER FROM THE
SECURITY COMMITTEE CHAIRMAN
MAJ Jason Atwell, USAR
[email protected]
As many of you know, or have seen reference to in recent editions of The Dispatch, the good work of the House and other committees has
been supplemented as of late by a Security Committee, established and run for the past year and a half by our own Colonel Jack James.
I recently became the new chair of the Committee and the GM asked me to write a quick note updating the membership on what the
Security Committee has accomplished so far and where we are headed going into next year. However, first I'd like to introduce myself.
I am a Major in the Army Reserve, currently assigned to USCYBERCOM. I have been in the Army for 17 years, spending time in CA and
MI units, and deploying with the 1st Cavalry Division to Iraq in 2009. I have been a member of the Club for just over two years, and was
married to my wife, Dina, in the Club in February 2020.
I was excited when Jack James gave me the opportunity to join the Committee because I get to combine my natural skill set as a cy-
bersecurity consultant and intelligence officer with my keen interest in helping support the Club as a both a career military officer and
someone with a deep personal interest in military history and heritage. The Committee itself consists of members from all five branches
of the Armed Forces with expertise in cyber, physical security, historical preservation, and VIP protection operations. We meet monthly
to discuss the current threat environment at the Club, compare notes with the full-time staff, and discuss priorities for a safe and secure
facility.
So far we have been able to use the Committee as a way to actively defend the Club during the protests in the late spring and early
summer of 2020 by providing firewatch, helping supplement our uniformed contract security, providing a hospitable location for law
enforcement and medical personnel to take a break from street duty, and building an impressive and comprehensive security planning
document. One immediate success that will better protect Club patrons in our current environment is the approval of the installation of
a ballistic glass protection film to the first floor windows, which will not affect the appearance of the windows but will make them more
survivable in the event of an emergency or disturbance.
Going forward we plan to use our collective expertise to improve the Club's cybersecurity, discuss options for more secure Membership
physical access, evaluate potential armed/unarmed and uniformed security guard scenarios, and overall reduce the burden on the full-
time staff for making security-related decisions while ensuring Member input to the process.
This month marks the beginning of my tenure as the Committee's chair, and I know I am not alone in expressing sincere appreciation to
Jack James for getting the ball rolling on this important function. We have learned a lot this year because the Club both benefits from,
and is impacted by, its location in one of the most secure yet potentially volatile locations in America. I welcome questions, comments,
and suggestions and look forward to working with everyone to make the Club as safe and hospitable as possible.

The army and Navy Club's NORT=H POLE
Employee Holiday Fund
HO, HO,
Dear ANC Members, HO
EXPRESS
One of the most frequently mentioned benefits of membership in The Army and Navy Club is the extraordinary level of service provided
by our staff. Whether it is the warm welcome at the front entrance, the friendly greeting in the lobby, or the caring and courteous service
we enjoy in the dining room, it is clear that the entire staff recognizes and respects our military heritage and makes a special effort to
ensure that every visit to the Club is memorable and gratifying.
I mention this to draw your attention to the Club’s Employee Holiday Fund. Every year, over 900 Club members show their apprecia-
tion to the staff by donating to the Fund. While donations vary in amount, most members make a special effort and typically give an
amount equal to a month’s Club dues. These Club members genuinely appreciate the extra effort the staff makes in providing a warm
and friendly atmosphere, while demonstrating loyalty, commitment, and personal pride in working on our behalf as hospitality industry
professionals.
I am looking forward to supporting the Holiday Fund once again this year and ask that you join me and the other members of the Club
in letting our staff know how much we appreciate their efforts on our behalf. As in the past, we have included a donation envelope for
your use. You may enclose a check or, if you prefer, charge your donation to your Club account. Be sure to include your name, member
number, and amount. You may also contribute by calling Accounts Receivable at 202-534-3194.
I would also ask that you make a special effort to contribute this year in light of the on-going public health crisis that has disrupted Club
operations and adversely affected the livelihoods and financial security of many members of our staff. This year, every donation will
count in a very special way and will make a meaningful difference in the lives of our dedicated Club employees.
Sincerely,
COL Marc Warren, USA (Ret.)
Club Vice President

ANC CARES FUND - THANK YOU FOR DONATING!
Ms. Raquel Tapia
Director of Finance
To Our Dear Members:
I hope you and your families are staying safe.
Like most businesses in our industry, the Club has also suffered losses due to the pandemic. As a result,
management was forced to make some tough decisions to keep the Club afloat.
Thanks to your generosity, we were able to collect $18,104.25 for the ANC Cares Fund. This fund went to several
of our valued employees who were heavily affected financially.
On behalf of everyone here at ANC, I would like to personally thank all of you for the contributions and continued
support. We are all in this together. Stay safe and we hope to see you back in the Club soon.
Forever grateful,
Raquel Tapia

An Update on New Year's Day
After careful thought and consideration, the Board of Governors has chosen to cancel the Annual New Year’s Day
Open House for 2021. This wasn’t an easy decision due to the popularity of this event. The Open House is the
Club’s time to shine and is an ideal opportunity to showcase the beautiful Clubhouse, delectable menu, and top-notch
member service. However, with DC Health limiting public gatherings to 50 people, we wouldn’t be able to make the
event our grand time-honored tradition it has become over the years.
The Club is confident that by Spring 2021 DC Health will have eased the restrictions on dining and public gatherings
so we are moving forward with plans to host an in person Annual Meeting Spring 2021. We look forward to seeing
you in person then. In the meantime, please engage with us in our many in-person or virtual events planned and
organized by the Special Events Committee and our incredible staff.
THE ARMY AND NAVY CLUB
A Platinum Club of America
Moving up eight spots from last year, The Army and Navy Club was voted
in the top 50 Best City Clubs in America!
This prestigious award recognizes The Army and Navy Club’s commitment
to excellence on all aspects of Club operations and was voted on by other
General Managers and Club Presidents in the industry.
We hope you, the Membership, are proud of this continued distinction; it was
achieved only because of your continued support, enthusiasm and dedication.

LIBRARY TRUST FUND // UPDATE
A Letter from the Library Trust Chairman
MG John D. Altenburg, USA (Ret.)
A Season of Thanks and Giving
This holiday season, we thank you all again for your support of the Library Trust. Your continuing contributions, participa-
tion, and investment of all variety—particularly during these difficult times—have allowed us to continue improving the
Library Trust. Without your enthusiasm and engagement, none of our efforts would have been possible.
We have continued during the pandemic to enhance our Club by expanding the online collection and initiating the process
of culling our library book collection in anticipation of making it available online along with the art collection. Club librarian
Will Andersen has engaged in discussions with the Club’s Fox Conner Society about participating in their events. Fox Connor
provides an excellent platform for enhancing our book collection and keeping members informed of library developments.
In coordination with the Special Events Committee, we have also begun hosting book events again. Most recently, on No-
vember 17, author Jim Mann discussed his new book, "The Great Rift: Dick Cheney, Colin Powell, and the Broken Friendship
That Defined an Era." It was a fascinating and edifying evening for all who attended.
Introducing the Library Trust Speaker Series
We are pleased to announce the launch of a virtual Library Trust speaker series, featuring monthly Zoom discussions with
military artists, historians, cultural leaders and others. Our inaugural event will feature the return to our Club of painter
Lieutenant Colonel David Richardson, USMC (Ret.), who will discuss his experience as a Marine officer who maintained a
painting practice through multiple deployments and combat duty. The Library Trust hosted an extensive exhibition of Rich-
ardson’s paintings in 2017.
This event will take place on Wednesday, December 9, 2020 at 6:30 PM. Please visit the online calendar on the Club's website
to register for the event. For questions, please email [email protected].
We Need Your Help to Ensure our Future
Now more than ever, your support of the Library Trust is meaningful, important, and vital for our operations. In times like
these, your donations ensure that we can maintain Club Member benefits now and in the future. As you organize your end-
of-year donations, please consider giving to The Library Trust. The Army and Navy Club Library Trust Fund is a 501(c)(3)
organization, so all donations are tax deductible.
In order to make it easier to give, we have established a donations page on our collections website, where you can make
one-time gifts or set up recurring monthly or annual donations through a direct bank transfer or credit card. Some may
prefer this new method, while others prefer to donate when paying their Club invoices. With each donation on our website,
you will be immediately emailed an acknowledgement letter for tax purposes. Of course, recurring donations to the Library
Trust through monthly Club dues are also welcome.
Visit: Collections.ArmyNavyClub.org/Support
There are several other ways to give. Some members have generously included the Library Trust in their estate planning
and bequeathed IRAs to the Trust. Each of them is specially recognized in the Library Reading Room. Other donors have
used Donor Advised Funds (DAF) to contribute to the Trust. Another method is through a Qualified Charitable Distribution
(QCD). A QCD from an IRA by a donor who has reached the required minimum distributions age (RMD) can reduce the taxable
amount of an IRA distribution, lowering tax liability. Please contact me directly for more information. As always, we greatly
appreciate your generosity, especially the regular donations. Most important—thank you, and a blessed holiday season to
you and your loved ones!!!
