THE 1925 SHENANDOAH AIR DISASTER AND CLUB MEMBER
LCDR ZACHARY LANSDOWNE, USN

By Col James A. Bracken, USMC (Ret.) Club Vice President & Historian

The United States Navy, seeing the
success the Germans had with rigid,
lighter-than airships during WW I,
procured an air fleet of five dirigibles.
The first, USS Shenandoah, was cap-
tained by an experienced lighter-than–
air aviator, Lieutenant Commander
Zachary Lansdowne, a 1911 Annapolis
graduate who became a Club member
in 1914.
“The citizens of Noble County, Ohio were alarmed and amazed when

that accomplishment he was awarded the Navy Cross. Subsequent Navy hearings found “aerodynamic forces had brought

ZR-1 to the ground, the gasbags had not burst from pressure, there had
been no explosion and the air ship had not been mishandled.”

The facts were that the survivors owed their lives to the Navy’s foresight,
owing to Lansdowne’s suggestions and innovation in filling the gasbags
with helium rather than the dangerously volatile hydrogen. Lansdowne
was fully exonerated.

Outraged by the tragic crash of the Shenandoah, aviation proponent
Brig. Gen. Billy Mitchell unleashed a 6,000-word press statement cit-
ing “incompetency,” “criminal negligence,” and “almost treasonable
administration” by Army and Navy leaders. It was Mitchell’s outrage
over the tragic loss of life that subsequently led to his court martial.
In early 1924 Lansdowne took command of the Navy’s first rigid,

Honorable William L. Ball, III

Join The Army and Navy Club in hosting Honorable William L. Ball, III
as keynote speaker at our Annual Black Tie Gala. The event is sure to be an evening full of

camaraderie, highlighted by our great military leaders and shared commitment to service.

About the Keynote Speaker:
Will Ball has held senior positions in both the public and private sectors in a career that spans over 40 years in the Nation’s
Capital. Mr. Ball began his government service in 1975 on the U.S. Senate staff. For ten years, he served in senior staff
positions, including as a chief of staff for two former Senate committee chairmen and as a professional staff member at
the Senate Armed Services Committee.
Subsequently, Mr. Ball joined the Reagan Administration as the Assistant Secretary of State for Legislative Affairs under
Secretary of State George Shultz. In 1986, he joined the White House staff and was appointed as Assistant to the Presi-
dent for Legislative Affairs where he served as President Reagan’s chief liaison to the Congress.
In 1988, he was nominated by President Reagan to be the 67th Secretary of the Navy, and was confirmed in March of that year by the
Senate. Following completion of the President’s term in office, Mr. Ball moved to the private sector to become head of a national trade as-
sociation representing major soft drink and beverage companies, and in 2005, he formed a government relations consulting firm, Ball &
Associates. He currently serves as an advisor to the Georgia Department of Economic Development on military installations and activities
located in Georgia, and for employers across the state working in the defense and aerospace sector.
Ball is a 1969 Navy ROTC graduate of the Georgia Institute of Technology and after receiving his commission served as a Surface Warfare
Officer assigned to the guided missile destroyer USS Sellers (DDG-11). Ashore, he served at the Bureau of Naval Personnel and the Office of
Legislative Affairs before completing his active duty service. In addition to his business activities, he is a trustee and former chairman of the
Asia Foundation, a former member of the Georgia Tech President’s Advisory Board, a former trustee of the Maine Maritime Academy, and
a former director of the Naval Historical Foundation. He and his wife, the former Patricia Adkins of Memphis, have four grown daughters
and three grandchildren and reside in Alexandria, Virginia.

A Letter from the Library Trust Chairman LIBRARY TRUST FUND // UPDATE

MG John D. Altenburg, USA (Ret.)

Major Enhancements to Online Collection: Collections.ArmyNavyClub.org
Over the past six months the Library Trust has been striving to offer our members premier online access to our art collection through
our website, art features in The Bugle, longform art columns for our Library Trust subscribers, and webinar events. We are pleased
to announce the launch of a comprehensive update to our Online Collection that will allow you even greater access to our artworks.

Enhanced Collections Search
A number of new features greatly augment the Online Collection’s search functions. Most significantly, all of our “special collec-
tions” have now been integrated into our primary collection, which makes them searchable through our “keyword search.” This
includes our Civil War stereograph collection, the Roy Boehm “First Navy SEAL” archive, and the Members in History collection
of Club Members who appeared on the cover of TIME Magazine. This means that you can now search using keywords through a
total of 1,350 unique objects (and growing in number every month).

Further enhancements to the site include additional image views for sculptures. Simply click on the “Additional Image” view beneath
the main image to see it at a different angle.
New and Improved Stereograph Collections Pages
Our Civil War stereograph collection comprises approximately 1,000 individual stereographs, each of which are scanned and ar-
chived, and all textual content transcribed from each object in order to make them searchable in our database. We recently uploaded
a new batch of approximately 350 stereographs to the website and also made a number of significant web enhancements to help you
explore them. The stereographs are now organized in separate subfolders for easy navigation. Visit our website, select Special Collec-
tions from our Search the Collections menu, and click on Civil War Stereographs at the bottom of the page.

The stereographs are divided into “boxes,” which translate directly to how they are physically sorted and organized in the Club
Library. Each box has multiple subfolders, which are organized alphabetically by subject. Once you are on an individual object page,
you can scroll down to the object Label, where we have transcribed the content from the back of that object. You can also navigate
back and forth between stereographs using the Previous and Next buttons beneath each image.
Please Support the Library Trust
The Library Trust’s collections, exhibitions, and public programs offer inspiring encounters with military art, literature, and cul-
ture, and your contributions directly support our efforts and initiatives. Gifts at every level are vital. Please consider making regular,
tax-deductible donations to the 501(c)(3) Library Trust through your monthly or quarterly Club dues.
