LIBRARY TRUST FUND // UPDATE
A Letter from the Library Trust Chairman
MG John D. Altenburg, USA (Ret.)
Despite the Club’s closure, May and June were productive and eventful months for The Library Trust, with events that included
the hosting of a live online art collection tour and the facilitating of an international exhibition featuring exclusively work from
our collection.
Artwork Security During Lafayette Square Protests
The Army and Navy Club, as you know, is located one short block from Lafayette Square. Our proximity to the White House
is a point of pride for the Club—a reminder of the military’s central importance to our country. However, this also put the
Clubhouse in a difficult situation during the protests in late May and early June.
The streets surrounding the Club were filled with protestors each night, and although largely peaceful, some buildings in our
area were looted and vandalized. It is notable that the statue of Admiral Farragut in Farragut Square, as well as Decatur House,
home of the White House Historical Association, were vandalized by graffiti.
In order to ensure the safety of our art collection, The Library Trust relocated all of the first-floor artworks to a secure location
until the protests subsided.
Art in Embassies, Bangkok
The Library Trust is pleased to be working with Art in Embassies on a new
exhibition in Bangkok, Thailand. Art in Embassies is a program within the
U.S. Department of State, which curates art exhibitions for U.S. Embassies
and Ambassadorial residences worldwide. Exhibitions are assembled with loans
from museums, galleries, private collections, and individual artists.
This exhibition will be installed in the representational spaces of Ambassador USS Oregon by Antonio Jacobsen
Michael DeSombre's official residence in Bangkok. It will be seen by all visitors
to the residence most of the Embassy's diplomatic events are held. Ambassador
DeSombre personally chose to reach out to The Army and Navy Club for this
exhibition.
We are loaning more than twenty pieces to the show and are the sole lenders, making this the first international showcase of The
Army and Navy Club’s art collection. We will dedicate a future article to this subject once the exhibition is open.
All of the artwork will be returned to the Club by the end of this year.
A Virtual Tour of The Club’s Art Collection
On Thursday, May 28, The Library Trust led a virtual gallery tour for members using the online collection website. This Zoom
webinar, facilitated by Elizabeth Newcomer and the Special Events Committee, was an exciting opportunity to demonstrate the
use of our state-of-the-art website and discuss the evolution of the Library Trust. It was a most enjoyable evening, spent with
members and friends, virtual though it was.
The event was recorded for posterity, so if there is anyone who missed this opportunity and would like to see this comprehensive
tour of our remarkable online collection, please contact Elizabeth Newcomer at [email protected]. And don’t
forget to visit our art collection, at Collections.ArmyNavyClub.org.
