A LETTER FROM THE BOARD OF GOVERNORS

Vice President
Recently, I inquired into February events planned at other clubs around the country. CAPT James H. Czerwonky, USN (Ret.)
Everyone, it seems, is planning a Valentine’s Day event or soiree of sorts. We too
are offering sweetheart related activities surrounding February 14th, including a Secretary
“Galantine’s Day” happy hour for our ANC ladies. BG Malinda E. Dunn, USA (Ret.)

Surprisingly however, there were no mentions to events related to Black History Treasurer
Month, also known as National African American History Month. Perhaps it was an
oversight or maybe other clubs struggle with a lack of diversity in management or LTG Larry R. Jordan, USA (Ret.)
governance. Or perhaps it is for an entirely different reason of which I am unaware. House Committee, Chair
However, of this I am certain: It was an absolute delight to share with other club
leaders the details of our Black History Month events. Col Eugene P. Gay, USAF (Ret.)

THANK YOU FOR DONATING!

Ms. Donika Stewart
Accounts Receivable Coordinator

Dear ANC Members,
I hope that everyone had a safe and happy holiday season. I want to personally thank all of the
members who generously donated to the 2020 Employee Holiday Fund. 2020 was an unprecedented
year, but even in a year that brought hardship to so many, we were overwhelmed with the donations
that came through for our staff! The funds were distributed on December 11, and I can say without
question that you truly brought so much joy to the ANC employees and their families. There are no
words to express how truly grateful we all are.
I would also like to thank the members who contributed to the ANC Cares Employee Assistance
Fund since we printed the list in the December 2020 issue of The Dispatch. These members are
listed below.
I wish you all a happy, healthy and safe 2021, and I look forward to seeing you all at the Club soon!
Sincerely,
Donika Stewart

Whaling Captains of Color: America's First Meritocracy
By: Skip Finley

Tuesday, February 16, 2021 | 6:30pm
Please visit the Club Calendar to sign up for this Zoom event.

The history of whaling as an industry on this continent has been well-told in books,
including some that have been bestsellers, but what hasn't been told is the story of
whaling's leaders of color in an era when the only other option was slavery. Whaling
was one of the first American industries to exhibit diversity. A man became a captain
not because he was white or well connected, but because he knew how to kill a whale.
Along the way, he could learn navigation and reading and writing. Whaling presented a

tantalizing alternative to mainland life.
Working with archival records at whaling museums, in libraries, from private archives and
interviews with people whose ancestors were whaling masters, Finley culls stories from
the lives of over 50 black whaling captains to create a portrait of what life was like for these

leaders of color on the high seas.
The book concludes as facts and factions conspire to kill the industry, including wars,
weather, bad management, poor judgment, disease, obsolescence, and a non-renewable
natural resource. Ironically, the end of the Civil War allowed the African Americans who
were captains to exit the difficult and dangerous occupation - and make room for the Cape

Verdean who picked up the mantle, literally to the end of the industry.

Thunder at the Gates:
The Black Civil War Regiments that Redeemed America

By: Douglas R. Egerton
Friday, February 19, 2021 | 12:30pm
Please visit the Club Calendar to sign up for this Zoom event.

Soon after Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1,
1863, abolitionists began to call for the creation of black regiments. At first, the South,
and most of the North, responded with outrage - southerners promised to execute any
black soldiers captured in battle, while many northerners claimed that blacks lacked

the necessary courage. Meanwhile, Massachusetts, long the center of abolitionist
fervor, launched one of the greatest experiments in American history.

In Thunder at the Gates, Douglas Egerton chronicles the formation and battlefield
triumphs of the 54th and 55th Massachusetts Infantry and the 5th Massachusetts
Cavalry-regiments led by whites but composed of black men born free or into slavery.
He argues that the most important battles of all were won on the field of public
opinion, for, in fighting with distinction, the regiments realized the long-derided idea

of full and equal citizenship for blacks.
A stirring evocation of this transformative episode, Thunder at the Gates offers a

riveting new perspective on the Civil War and its legacy.

Celebrating Women’s Roles in the

capacity for dining events.

In honor of Women’s History Month, The Army and Navy Club will continue the annual tradition of hosting the Celebrating
Women’s Roles in the Success of the Military Luncheon. The Keynote speaker will be Ms. Bonnie Carroll, President and
Founder of the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors and 2015 Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient.

About the Keynote Speaker:
Bonnie Carroll is the widow of an Army general who died along with seven other Soldiers in a
military plane crash in 1992. Out of that loss, she founded the Tragedy Assistance Program for
Survivors (TAPS), the national program providing comfort and care for all who are grieving the death
of a military loved one. Since its launch in 1994, TAPS has cared for more than 100,000 surviving
family members through a national network of peer-based emotional support services; a 24/7
helpline available to those grieving a loss; connections to community-based care throughout the
nation; and casework assistance for families navigating all of the resources and benefits available
to them. In 2015, Ms. Carroll was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in recognition of her
work with surviving military families.

In addition to founding and serving as the President of TAPS, Carroll also held appointments in the government, including
White House Liaison at the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) under President George W. Bush; Executive Assistant to
the President for Cabinet Affairs under President Reagan, and in Baghdad, Iraq, as the Senior Advisor to the Iraqi Ministry
of Communications during Operation Iraqi Freedom. During her earlier career in Washington, D.C., Ms. Carroll lived and
worked on Capitol Hill as a political consultant on Presidential and Congressional campaigns, as well as consulting on
national defense issues.

Carroll retired as a Major in the Air Force Reserve following 31 years of service, where her career included serving as Chief,
Casualty Operations, HQ USAF. Prior to joining the USAFR, Maj Carroll served 16 years as both a non-commissioned officer
and then a commissioned officer in the Air National Guard as a Transportation Officer, Logistics Officer, and Executive Officer.

A LETTER FROM THE LIBRARIAN

Mr. Will Andersen
Club Librarian
I found the company commander from whom I was to take over sitting pleasantly in the tall open parlour window
of a big farmhouse, just as Shelley would have been sitting; he received me as a sort of fellow-collegian, and my
business was made easy for me. Such characters and occasions were the charm of the B.E.F. There was a grace that
war never overcast.
— Edmund Blunden, Undertones of War (1928; revised 1930)

Since my arrival at The Army and Navy Club in August 2019, I have indeed felt that "my business" has been "made easy for me";
my interactions with my fellow directors, staff, and the membership have been marked by a certain "grace" that I scarcely take
for granted.

That said, there is an immense amount of work to be done to put the Library in order and bring it up to date. Beginning my first
year with a new OCLC Cataloging Subscription, I began cataloging new acquisitions in the MARC format, which is a prerequisite
for putting the catalog online. Recataloging the rest of the collection—the legacy collection, we might call it—is an expensive
proposition in terms of those ever-scarce resources, time and money, and your contributions to the Library Fund will eventually
be instrumental in bringing this vital work to completion.

In the meanwhile, particularly in these exceptionally financially straightened times due to COVID-19, the Library has been
a busy place. Last March, I embarked on the significant, and significantly long-overdue, twin undertakings of shelf-reading
(putting the shelves in order, in correct call-number sequence) and weeding (removing outdated, out-of-scope, and badly worn
or deteriorated items) in order to create adequate shelf space and maintain the quality of the collection.

Recognition is due here to Nathalie Scharpf, daughter of member N. Thatcher Scharpf, who is very generously and ably
volunteering her time at the Library, and without whom material sustained progress in the essential, labor-intensive process of
shelf-reading would not be possible.

Glad to see the last of our recently departed annus horribilis, we look forward to continued progress in 2021. And, with utmost
gratitude, we thank all of those below who supported the Library Trust in 2020.

Sincerely,
Will Andersen

LIBRARY TRUST FUND // UPDATE

A Letter from the Library Trust Chairman

MG John D. Altenburg, USA (Ret.)

Grateful for the Present and Hopeful for the Future

On behalf of the Library Trust, I thank all our Members and friends who donated to our Trust during our holiday fundraising efforts.
As you know, The Army and Navy Club Library Trust is a registered nonprofit organization that operates independently of Club
funds. As such, our operating budget for exhibitions, programs, acquisitions, and collections management comes entirely from
donor support and endowment. Philanthropic support is critical to sustaining our efforts, as well as the integrity of the Club itself,
because the Library Trust is the steward of its history and artifacts. Everything we do is possible because of your generosity.

As a reminder, we also actively seek support for exhibitions, programs, and special projects that are funded exclusively by private
donations. This allows you to direct your gift to the programs that mean the most to you. For instance, Dick and Jacque Trefry
commissioned and funded the federal frame for the Lansdowne portrait of George Washington in the Club’s Main Dining Room;
the second-floor portrait of General Carl Mundy, Marine Corps Commandant, was commissioned by his family and his Basic School
classmates; the son and daughter of General Russell Dougherty donated the excellent portrait of the former SAC Commander now
near the ballroom entrance.

Furthermore, there are two rare and unique naming opportunities available for a generous donor to leave a prominent and lasting
legacy at The Army and Navy Club: the naming of the Army and Navy Club Library, as well as the Online Collection. The online
collection reaches an international audience of military historians, scholars, universities, museums, and connoisseurs, and helps
us partner with museums around the country, including the Smithsonian. And, of course, the Library is the most historic, beautiful,
and member-appreciated space within the hallowed grounds of the Club itself (Main Dining Room notwithstanding ).

The Library Trust Speaker Series Presents: “Rob Dalessandro: Normandy”
Wednesday, 17 February, 6:30 PM

We are pleased to announce the next installment of our virtual Library Trust speaker
series, featuring monthly Zoom discussions with military artists, historians, cultural
leaders, and others.

"Hour of Liberation, 101 Airborne, June 6, 1944" On Wednesday, 17 February, 6:30 PM, Library Trust Committee Member and renowned
Normandy, France historian Rob Dalessandro will present on the historic Invasion of Normandy during
World War II. This discussion will function as something of a companion piece to the
popular World War I presentation Rob gave at the Club in 2019. Rob is a retired U.S.
Army Colonel the Deputy Secretary of the American Battle Monuments Commission.

Rob is the former Director of the United States Army Center of Military History at Fort McNair in Washington, D.C. During times less
subject to quarantine, Rob leads battlefield tours throughout sites in the United States, France, and Italy. He is a dynamic speaker
whose enthusiasm for history makes every presentation a treat.

To register, visit www.ArmyNavyClub.org and sign up through the event page on the Club Calendar. We will also be including links
to the event in upcoming weekly events emails as we get closer to the date.

Send Us Your Feedback!
We are excited for the Library Trust’s future, but it won’t be possible without you. We would love to hear from you. What would you
like to see from the Library Trust in the coming years, as we emerge from the pandemic and redouble our efforts?
