6 to 8 pm | Free to attend The WW2 Naval Service of Douglas Fairbanks Jr.
John Paul Jones/Iwo Jima Rooms
An original Hollywood black and white studio portrait of CAPT Douglas E.
Fairbanks, Jr. USNR, KBE, DSC will be donated to the Library Trust Committee by
ANC Member LCDR Michael Zampella, USN.
Fairbanks; son of Hollywood legend Douglas Fairbanks, Sr; was a Hollywood
star in his own right with a well-established career, which he gave up in 1939 for
active-duty military service in the U.S. Navy. He also eventually joined our very
own Army and Navy Club.
The cinematic star turned real-life hero was heavily decorated for personal
bravery in multiple operations during WWII. He served six years on Active Duty
in Navy ships large and small, as well as with special operations forces. He was
instrumental in bringing tactical deception methods to U.S. naval amphibious
operations.
LCDR Zampella will donate the photo to the Library Trust and deliver a lecture
detailing CAPT Fairbanks' service entitled, "The Well-Tailored Hero: The WW2
Naval Service of Douglas Fairbanks Jr." Please join us in celebrating this ANC
legend and learning more about his wartime courage. For reservations, please

Pyle also influenced Congressional legislation. In a March 1,

LIBRARY TRUST FUND // UPDATE
A Letter from the Library Trust Chairman
MG John D. Altenburg, USA (Ret.)
Fall Art Event: National Desert Storm Memorial First-Look
Mark your calendars! On Wednesday, 30 October at 1830 hours, the Library Trust will host an opening for a new
exhibition about the forthcoming National Desert Storm and Desert Shield Memorial. Approved by Congress and the
President in March 2017 and slated for completion by 2021, the Memorial will be located at 23rd St and Constitution
Ave NW, just north of the Lincoln Memorial.
The opening will include a conversation with chief architect Randy Schumacher and his Memorial design partners at
Olin Studio, one of the top landscape architecture firms in the country. The discussion will include the legacy of Desert
Storm, how the proposed memorial portrays the 1991 “left-hook” attack, and how it respects and builds upon the
existing landscape and topography of the National Mall.
This exhibition follows in the footsteps of last year’s National WWI Memorial First-Look exhibition, spotlighting
national memorials slated for development in Washington over the coming years (there are at least six!).
Please RSVP to Elizabeth Newcomer at [email protected].
Recent Acquisitions and Loans
Donated by Club member Terrence Moore, the latest addition to the Library Trust collection is an eighteenth-century
print depicting Chinese instruments of war. This curious and captivating piece has been added to our ongoing Prints
and Drawings exhibition in the Eagle Grill. The original painting from which the engraving was based is by William
Alexander, an English painter and illustrator who accompanied the first British diplomatic mission to China in 1792.
While in China, Alexander made many drawings and paintings of this country, which had been almost entirely unknown
in England. Upon Alexander’s return to China, his works were popularly reproduced as prints throughout England.
By now most of you have admired the maquette by sculptor Steven Whyte of General Benjamin O. Davis, Jr., on loan
from Mr. Conway Jones. The Davis maquette remains on view at the entrance to the Club near the painting of Admiral
Farragut. Now Mr. Jones has donated to the Library Trust a model of the Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer
USS Gravely. The ship is named for Vice Admiral Samuel L. Gravely, Jr., the first African American officer in the U.S.
Navy to serve aboard a fighting ship, to command a Navy ship, and to become both a fleet commander and a flag
officer. Mr. Jones also donated a copy of a cookbook published by the crew and families of the Gravely. We will work
with Chef DeLoach to explore a special February event featuring recipes from the Gravely cookbook.
A painted replica of Washington Crossing the Delaware is back on loan to the Club, now on view in the Main Dining
Room. The original 1851 painting by German-American artist Emanuel Leutze (1816 – 1868), is an icon of American art,
permanently on view at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.
Featured Artwork from the Collection
After four years in collections storage, the Club's painting of the USS Oregon has been installed in the Daiquiri Lounge
in a newly commissioned frame by Gold Leaf Studios. The painting was removed from its original location in what is
now the Gannon Room when renovations began in 2015. The Oregon is now among friends, hanging alongside other
naval paintings from the Spanish American War period featured in the Daiquiri Lounge.
USS Oregon (BB-3) was a pre-dreadnought Indiana-class battleship of the U.S. Navy, commissioned on July 15, 1896.
She served in The Spanish American War, the Philippine American War, Boxer Rebellion, and the Siberian Intervention.
18 | THE DISPATCH
In 1898, Oregon was ordered on a voyage around South America to the East Coast in preparation for war with Spain.
She reached Jupiter Inlet in 66 days, a journey of 14,000 nautical miles, a remarkable achievement at the time. The
journey popularized the ship with the American public and demonstrated the need for a shorter route, which led to
construction of the Panama Canal. She took part in the Battle of Santiago de Cuba that same year, where she and
the cruiser Brooklyn were the only ships fast enough to chase down the Spanish cruiser Cristóbal Colón, forcing its
surrender. She received the nickname "Bulldog of the Navy," most likely because of her high bow wave—known as
"having a bone in her teeth" in nautical slang—and perseverance throughout her demanding missions.
The artist, Antonio Jacobsen (1850 – 1921), was a Danish-born American maritime artist known as the "Audubon of
Steam Vessels," making this a significant painting in the Club's collection.
Library Trust Donations
We'd like to express our heartfelt gratitude to all of you who support the Library Trust. Thank you for your continuing
donations, contributions, and investment of all variety. Without your enthusiasm and engagement, none of our efforts
over the years would have been possible, or meaningful. For all of us that work to enhance the beauty, history, and
community on which this Club was founded, your support of the Library Trust is essential and deeply appreciated.
Library Trust donations are more essential than ever. We continue working to enhance our Club through new
exhibitions, artist talks, and new acquisitions, as well as expand our online collection for the edification of our
members and the public and to facilitate new partnerships with institutions like the Smithsonian Institute and the
Naval War College Museum.
Conservation is expensive, but essential to the future of our collection, which I believe we all agree is one of the most
valuable and enriching amenities our Club offers. Our 501(c)(3) status enables you to contribute to our continuing
improvement and acquisition efforts. There are several ways to donate other than through monthly Club dues and
periodic contributions through those invoices. Donations to the Library Trust are fully tax deductible. Please contact
John Altenburg ([email protected]) for more information. As always, we greatly appreciate your generosity,
especially the regular donations. Thanks!!! ◄
