Equipping pastors to equip leaders for life.
Encounter & Encourage, Equip & Empower

As I begin a new year of following
Jesus- I renew myself to the high road
journey. A walk as Paul encourages
followers of Jesus by saying, "I,

therefore, the prisoner of the Lord,
beseech you to walk worthy of
your calling" (Ephesians 4:1).

This calling is the high road, the
"straight and narrow way," where one listens to,
relates to, and obeys Jesus. Chapter 5 of Ephesians tells us that the
character of unity mentioned in chapter 4 flows from such a high road journey
that walks in LOVE, LIGHT, and WISDOM then; this walk is illustrated in chapter
6 by your closest relationships.

One of the first measures of walking in love, light, and wisdom will be how you
talk to those closest to you. Your words reveal what's occurring in your heart. So
listen more closely to what you say, how you say, and the reaction of those to
whom you are speaking.

It will tell you a lot about how high your journey is!

The heart loves, and every day the loves of our hearts are intentionally or
unintentionally communicated to God and those nearest us. Words reveal who or
what rules our hearts. They reflect what our hearts have already conceived.

May the seeds of His word planted in our hearts produce loving words filled with
light and wisdom.

"Therefore be
imitators of God as
dear children. 2 And

walk in love, as
Christ also has
loved us and given
Himself for us, an

offering and a
sacrifice to God

for a sweet-
smelling aroma"
Ephesians 5:1-2,

NKJV).

Paul said to be "imitators of Christ." Today, the word imitator may have a
negative connotation. Paul is not using this word as we might consider a knock-
off being passed off as an original but as a paper with a drawing on it underneath
another piece of paper and traced onto the second piece of paper. Christ is in us,
illustrated by being drawn on the canvas of our body for others to see. And as
they see, they too may come to know that life in Christ is worth living!

This understanding accurately describes what Jesus is in our lives. His life is the
foundation of our life. Our life is a blank page where His life can be seen clearly
in our walk. The life of Christ flowing in and through us becomes the sweet-
smelling aroma, and the Father will be well pleased.

"Let it not even be named among you" But fornication and all
uncleanness or covetousness, let it not even be named among you, as is
fitting for saints; 4 neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor coarse jesting,
which are not fitting, but rather giving of thanks. 5 For this you know, that
no fornicator, unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater

As is fitting these activities are not fitting for the saints/followers of Jesus

Please take a moment a consider how you felt when you experienced a
fragrance that was appealing and associate it with how you felt. Then think about
a time you experienced a fragrance that was appalling and the feeling that went
with that.

You will then understand the feeling of the Father when we walk in Love, Light,
and wisdom - moving forward in Florida.

"For you were once darkness, but now you are light in
the Lord. Walk as children of light (for the fruit of the Spirit is in all
goodness, righteousness, and truth), finding out what is acceptable to the
Lord" (Ephesians 5:8-10, NKJV).

As we walk as children of light, we can come to understand what is acceptable to
the Lord. God's will is not hidden that you might not find it but rather hidden that
He might reveal it at the time we are most ready to listen.

Pain-filled moments give way to better listening, and at times God has to walk us
into pain before revealing His will for our life. But, on the other hand, good times
often give way to complacency and complacency to the dullness of hearing,
denial of our neediness, and ultimate defiance of God by doing things our way.

Today, if Jesus is Light (which He is), look to Him to find light to reveal amid your
pain what is pleasing to Him and do it! Look around you. Jesus is everywhere
working. Jesus is in the middle of your trouble. He wants you to know and not be
in the dark. Remember, you were ONCE in darkness,

BUT NOW, Walk as children of light.

As we continued our journey on the high road, Paul said, "See then that
you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise, redeeming the time,
because the days are evil." Ephesians 5:15-16 NKJV

"Circumspectly" means to walk with great care. Be aware of what's around you.
Understand what might trip you up or become an obstacle to your progress. The
days are filled with the schemes of the "evil one" (Matthew 6:13), and we must
"not be ignorant of his devices" (2 Cor. 2:11).

The word circumspect was used to describe how one would carefully pick out
items needed from the marketplace knowing what was required, then
examining the options and picking what's best to meet the need.

Oh, how that must be our walk. We must carefully select the things that are
helpful, encouraging, and inspiring. Who
we hang out with, what we read, who we
listen to, what we watch - all of these are
important in our high road journey with
Jesus.

Today, walk circumspectly and enjoy your
journey with Jesus!

At the upcoming Leadership Conference, each pastoral couple will receive a complimentary devotional book, Called 2
Love Called 2 Love like Jesus
is a simple command but perhaps one of the toughest to follow. Yet, this Christ-like love is the essence of who we are
and what we demonstrate to others. This devotional book is a compilation of devotions designed to help us live out Bibli-
cal love. Each devotion includes inspiring meditations from notable spiritual leaders like Mark Batterson, Gary Chapman,
Joni Eareckson Tada, Tony Evans, Francis Chan, and Sammy Rodriguez. Donnette Neal will assist in facilitating this de-
votional study as we gather weekly to reflect. Together, we will seek to live and love more like Jesus.
