CHIEF MINISTER

It gives me immense pleasure to announce the commencement
of the 13th Edition of Bengaluru International Film Festival
(BIFFES) being held from March 3 to 10, 2022.
The flagship cultural event, held annually in the Capital City of
Bengaluru, showcasing the best of cinemas from across the
globe, and held under the patronage of the Government of
Karnataka, is much awaited among the cinephiles.
The film festival, which returns after a year’s hiatus, due to the
Covid 19 pandemic, promises a veritable treat bringing the
‘World in Bengaluru’ for the film buffs to savour and experience
the panoply of narratives, diverse themes and cultures providing
for a fruitful engagement with cinema.
The Karnataka Chalanachitra Academy, under whose aegis the
film festival is organised, was conceived to inculcate a healthy
and appreciative cinema culture in the diaspora, a task which it
has been assiduously living up to its ascribed objective.
The Government of Karnataka, to achieve this stated goal, has
been generously extending all support, physical and intellectual
infrastructure, and has helped spread a holistic cinema culture
and also address the avid interest received from the general
public and filmmakers, both within and abroad.
I take this opportunity to heartily welcome every cinephile to
BIFFES. I am sure that the cine enthusiasts will strictly adhere
to the mandated Standard Operating Protocols in place in view
of the prevailing pandemic as they participate in utmost zeal
and enthusiasm and ensure the stupendous success of Brand
BIFFES.

PRINCIPAL SECRETARY

I extend my heartiest greetings warmly welcoming one and all,
from far and near, who have expectantly assembled to celebrate
creative cinemas as part of the 13th Edition of Bengaluru
International Film Festival (BIFFES) 2022.
Every edition of BIFFES, with its array of carefully curated films,
drawn from across the world, has provided the vast family of
film buffs exclusive and unique engagement with the magic of
movies.
Conscious that cine lovers had missed their date with BIFFES
last year due to the raging Covid 19 pandemic, leading to the
deferment of the calendar film festival, I am happy to say all
efforts have been made to ensure BIFFES more than makes up
for the previous year’s absence.
With this assurance, I am indeed pleased to invite committed
cineastes and filmmakers to BIFFES, which has become
a permanent cultural do among the City’s art and culture
enthusiasts, and acts as a symbiosis of mutually appreciate and
educative congregation of cine buffs and film fraternity on a
single platform to experience where the film industry stands
today.
Further, in tune with the expectations of the participants, the
BIFFES team has been assiduously and constantly making
appropriate changes to the film’s format and content, in keeping
the festival and global benchmarks, to making it a truly best in
class film festival with appropriate takeaways for all.
That BIFFES has been inducted to the exalted hall of accredited
film festivals with the International Federation of Film Producers
Association (FIAPF) providing its accreditation is indicative of
the importance and growth of BIFFES among the comity of film
festivals held across the world.
Besides the film screenings, an array of specialised workshops
and master classes, conducted by the prominent experts from
the industry, has been lined up to ensure the film festival extends
beyond film viewing to a better learning and understanding and
appreciative experience of the dynamic art form of cinema.
I wish one and all a fruitful and productive time at BIFFES and
stupendous success for the State’s prestigious cultural event
- 13th Edition of BIFFES, being held with the pandemic air still
hovering above us and in the belief that all participants will
wholesomely adhere to the Covid 19 protocols mandated for the
safety of all.

Fellow cinephiles and film fraternity. Namaskara. The moment,
we have all awaited with eager anticipation, has finally arrived.
Yes, the 13th Bengaluru International Film Festival is on the
threshold bringing the “World to Bengaluru.”
As Chairman, Karnataka Chalanachitra Academy, under whose
aegis, the annual flagship film festival is held, it gives me
immense pride and pleasure to welcome one and all to Capital
City Bengaluru as we host the week-long cinema carnival
drawing you into the wondrous world of movies. You are all aware
that since the December of 2019 the entire humankind has been
straining all its resources in combating the Covid 19 pandemic.
The entertainment industry, more so, film festivals, held,
religiously on calendar dates, have also have faced disruptions
the pandemic has brought in its wake.
Cancellations and deferments have become the order of the day
which saw your favourite BIFFES too, forced to take a year’s hiatus.
As a result, “hybrid” – melding of both offline (physical, theatrical
screenings) and online (streaming on OTT and digital platforms),
has become the new normal in the way films are purveyed,
watched and especially, film festivals, are conducted. Despite
such unforeseen situations and challenges, and turbulent times,
I am pleased to state that the 13th Edition of BIFFES has received
the much-coveted FIAPF Accreditation propelling BIFFES into
the exalted realm of 46 film festivals across the world which have
received this singular recognition. That this has
come during my tenure gives me a sense of immense satisfaction
of further burnishing Brand BIFFES as one of the must attend
film festivals.
While BIFFES, in these past 12 editions, has grown in size, stature
and scope, bringing the best of cinemas to cinema conscious
Bengalureans, the new recognition has thrust an added
responsibility on BIFFES. In tune with this, a slew of new sections
such as CRITICS’ WEEK, OSCAR OMNIBUS, have added new
lustre to the regular ones such as the Asian Competition, Indian
Competition, Kannada Competition et al, further embellishing
the film buffs favourite festival.
I take pride in assuring you that this time too, the much
anticipated and minutely scrutinised CINEMA OF THE WORLD
section, the festival’s favourite draw, is featuring the choicest
cinemas culled opening a vibrant vista to nifty, nuances
narratives and universal thematic concerns celebrated auteurs
have brought onto the screen.
As I whole-heartedly invite you to join in toasting the fascinating
films spread and unique engagement with the most potent
visual art form, I also express my deepest sense of gratitude and
immense thanks to our dynamic Chief Minister Shri Basavaraj
Bommai whose encouragement and unstinted support went a
long way in making BIFFES happen despite the pandemic still
hovering over us.

COMMISSIONER

On behalf of the Government of Karnataka, it gives me immense
happiness, to say we are extremely delighted to host the 13th
Edition of Bengaluru International Film Festival being held from
March 3 to 10, 2022.
BIFFES, which, in these past 12 editions, carved a special niche and
a brand for itself as the must attend festival, in the international
film circuit, now comes with the added responsibility of FIAPF
Accreditation.
All this has been possible thanks to the overwhelming
enthusiasm and participation of our informed and eager film
buffs which has ensured the festival remains a favourite among
both the film fraternity as also large family of film enthusiasts.
This time too, in keeping with our standard offerings, BIFFES
sees over 200+ films from as many as 50+ countries being
showcased under various categories. The films will be screened
at the main festival venue – the 11 screens PVR Cinemas – Orion
Mall, Dr Rajkumar Road, Rajajinagar, where also the academic
sessions is being held, besides Dr Raj Bhavan Artists Association,
Chamrajpet and Suchitra Film Society, Banashankari.
With the stated objective of ensuring the film festival is all
encompassing and grows in size and stature each year, I am
pleased to say this year too, we have taken many significant
steps to provide festival delegates with the most enriching and
rewarding film viewing and learning experience.
On this momentous occasion, it is my privilege to extend a hearty
welcome to all the delegates, jury members, guests, special
invitees and film enthusiasts wishing them a memorable 13th
BIFFES.

ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

We extend a hearty welcome to the delegates to attend the
screenings and enjoy the films at the 13th BIFFES.
It was on 27th January 2022 that our Hon’ble Chief Minister gave
his kind approval to go ahead with the preparation for the festival.
He also advised us to conduct screenings when the theatres get
the permission to accommodate 100% attendance at the halls.
At the same time, we received his carefully worded advice that
we should select films in such a manner that it should not only
satisfy the needs of the discerning audience but it should also
cater to the taste of those who want to enjoy good and well-
made entertainment films. This became a real challenge for us.
The time at our disposal was very short, only 35 days to be precise.
Our Artistic Department team started to work with great
earnestness. The young and talented enthusiasts of our team
did their best in scouting for the good films from all available
sources. As a result of the relentless effort we are able to
present a good package of films that includes special sections
like OSCAR SPECTRUM and CRITICS WEEK along with good
RETROSPECTIVES and COUNTRY FOCUS.
One more interesting feature of this year is the inclusion of on
line screening along with physical screenings making it a hybrid
format. One greatest advantage of this format is to help our
senior citizen film lovers who are hesitant to stir out fearing the
pandemic can stay at home and enjoy the films. In addition, it
also covers citizens of other parts of Karnataka who can have
access to these films. It is very likely that this will
become a regular feature in the coming years.

The Bengaluru International Film Festival has been a landmark
film festival for the 13th time in a row. Because of unavoidable
circumstances due to the pandemic last year, we had to
postpone the 13th edition of BIFFES to 2022. Fortunately, we have
more movies to choose from than usual - the best of both 2020
and 2021.
We are all lucky to witness the success of every annual BIFFES;
more and more potential filmmakers approach us with their
works of art, contributing to the proliferation of India’s talent
pool and various film industries. With several global players
bringing good competition to the table, we are forging better
international relations while improving locally. After all, what is
a better way than art and culture to foster better relationships
with countries?
We hope for all film enthusiasts to watch the movies screened
and encourage all the participant filmmakers. It is only with your
support that BIFFES continues to wow its audience and give a
platform to its filmmakers alike.

He is a Kannada film director. In most
of his movies, Desai blends art and
commercial cinema. He has written
and directed suspense/thrillers and
love stories. He has won the Karnataka
state awards 4 times in the Best
Screenplay & Best Dialogs categories.
SUNIL KUMAR DESAI He has also won the Filmfare awards
4 times.

MEENA KARNIK She has been in journalism for more
than 35 years now. As a film critic
she has attended many national and
international film festivals including
the prestigious Cannes, Berlinale,
Rotterdam and has been a FIPRESCI jury
member at the Delhi Osians , Bengaluru
International Film Festival, International
Film Festival of Kerala and The Flying
Broom International Women’s Film
Festival in Ankara, Turkey.

SHIVARUDRAIAH. K He has 45 years of experience in theatre
as an actor and director. He has several
years of experience in filmmaking and
documentary making. He has won
several awards including state Films
Awards from Gov’t of Karnataka. He
has also won international awards for
Wildlife photography.

2021

LALIT RAO He is a veteran film critic from Jaipur,
PAOLA DEI India. He is currently writing a book
on 25 best French films (1990-2015).
He did his masters from Université de
Paris Sorbonne Nouvelle. He worked
for the ‘Distribution of Indian cinema’
in France. As a film critic, he has
attended numerous film festivals in
France and India.

Paola Dei is an Art Psychologist
and SNCCI Film Critic and ANCT
Theater Critic. He is a member of the
Jury in International Festivals. He
has published and edited 15 texts
dedicated to cinema and participated
in group shows. He devised the
Psycofilm Method published in
International Scientific Journals.

2020 He is a Graduate in Cinema from the Film
and Television Institute of India, Pune.
ARUN CHADDA He has written, produced and directed
more than 100 documentaries, short
films and TV serials on socio-economic,
environment, anthropological and
development issues. Many of his films
have been shown at various National and
International Film Festivals and global
conferences.

ATUL GANGWAR Holding a post-graduate degree of
M.A. in Hindi Literature from Delhi
University, Atul has been working
with the television industry as a
programmer for over two decades.
In a 20 year long journey Atul has
witnessed the evolution of the media
industry. He has produced and edited
documentaries on various subjects.

He is a noted Indian Filmmaker
from the Kannada film industry who
is popular for parallel and Bridge
cinemas. He has been in the profession
for about 20 years and he is a recipient
of the Karnataka state Award for his
feature HAGGADA KONE (2014) and
DAYAL PADMNABHAN AA KARAALA RATRI (2018) under the
Best film and Best Director Categories.

2021

GP VIJAYAKUMAR He is a Founder and Managing Director
of M/s. Seven Arts International
Limited, Chennai- a leading Film
Production and Distribution Company
for the last 35 years. He has produced
43 Feature Films in various languages
– Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu and Hindi
and has distributed 75 Films.

He is a Hindi film and music historian
with a penchant for fine cinema,
regardless of where it is made. He has
written several books and hundreds of
articles on the subject. He is an ardent
fan of auteur directors like Vijay Anand,
Guru Dutt and Mehboob Khan and also
of significant actors like Dilip Kumar and
Vyjayanthimala, besides artistes such as
MANEK PREMCHAND OP Nayyar, Lata Mangeshkar and Talat
Mahmood.

SRIVATSA BR He has been an accredited and acclaimed
Corporate Photographer for over 35
years. With interest in World Cinema, he
has produced several documentaries for
The Centre for Environment Education
(CEE), The Ministry of Environment,
Government of India. He has also
produced documentaries for many
departments in the Government of
Karnataka, and Corporate Profiles for
many IT companies across the world.

A film and Television Institute (PUNE)
graduate. He has been an active
film maker, a film activist as well as
a film critic. He made innumerable
documentaries and the feature film
MAYABAZAAR produced by NFDC
which has won various awards.

JOYEDEEP

UTPAL DUTTA He is a well known journalist, activist,
writer, director and actor. A multi-
faceted personality, Chakravarthy is a
senior journalist with close to 20 years
of experience having worked with
Lankesh Patrike and other newspapers
in the state. He also founded People for
People, an organization which focuses on
organizing events that positively impact
the society.

CHAKRAVARTHY He is an award-winning film critic,
CHANDRACHUD filmmaker, radio producer, author,
and photographer. The audience have
appreciated his excellent command of
the medium in films such as BY LANE
2, BOHUBRITTA. He is the director of
Chalachitram National Film Festival
and the president of Chalachitram.

HEMA CHOUDARY She is an actress who has worked in
South Indian film industry. She has acted
mainly in Kannada films and also in
Malayalam, Tamil and Telugu movies. She
has given several hits and balanced her
work in South industry. The actress was
on the panel of the judging committee
of the National Film Awards three times.

An Alumnus of FTII, Pune, Neelaabh
Kaul is a Cinematographer with a
wide range of experience from short
films and documentaries; television
and commercials; to parallel cinema
and mainsteam bollywood films at the
other end of the spectrum.

NEELABH KAUL

He is an Indian director who made his
directorial debut with the 2017 Kannada
drama movie MOMBATHI, which stars
Rachana Smith, Sangeetha, Neethu
Shetty and Ravi Kumar.

PARTHASARATHI K He is totally involved in documentary film
making as a script writer and direction. He
is instrumental in making documentaries
like Amrutha Mayavee, Sasyarashee,
based on medical plants. This film is
highly acclaimed by Government of India
Department of Environment. Based in
connection with World Environment Day.

G N RAJASHEKARA He is a journalist in Lankesh Patrike as
NAIDU the political bureau chief, actor, television
presenter and producer in the Kannada
film industry. He has also directed short
movies to bring social awareness and
actively participated as a motivational
speaker in various educational
institutions. He was performing street
plays to educate people from rural areas
and simultaneously conducting quizzes
related to Art, especially in government
schools.

K RAGHUNATHA He is a law graduate functioning as a
practising advocate. In addition, he is
also a film producer. He makes films
under the banner of Messrs Saarathy
Nath Creators. He is also an office
bearer in various organisations like film
distributors association, documentary
film chamber and other organisations
connected with film organisation. He has
produced four to five documentary films.

Bakyt Mukul is an actor and a film
director from Kyrgyzstan. He was
born in 1965. He graduated from
Theater School with a degree in
drama and film acting, 1991. In 2010, he became a
member of the Union of Filmmakers of the Kyrgyz
Republic and a member of the Asia Pacific Screen
Academy (APSA), Australia in 2017. Both Bakyt
Mukul, Dastan Zhapar Uulu co-wrote the script
and directed the 2016 film ATANYN KEREEZI (A FA-
THER’S WILL). They won Golden Zenith for the Best
First Fiction Feature film at the Montreal World FF.
In 2016, they won the Asian Cinema Competition
section at the BIFFes.
