1 Eat Well, Stay Well 1 • Which food do you love to eat the most? • Name three fruits you eat in summer season and three in winter season. Know About Healthy Food Tina loved eating pizza, chips and chocolates. She ate them often. Her parents advised her that they were unhealthy and did not provide adequate nutrition. But she did not listen to them. Zara, Tina’s friend, also loved eating pizza, chips and chocolates. But she only ate them sometimes. Do you know why? She knew that they were not good for health. She wanted to eat healthy foods. She had milk, fruits, fresh vegetables, eggs, pulses, rice and wheat. So she was more healthy and stronger than Tina. 2 One day, a race was organised in their school. Both Tina and Zara participated in it. When the race began they started running very fast. However, after some time Tina felt tired. She could barely run. Zara continued running and came fi rst. After the race was over, Tina went to Zara to talk to her. ‘I felt so weak while running. Zara, how did you run so fast?’, asked Tina. ‘I eat healthy food daily. I also play a lot of outdoor games’, said Zara. Their teacher heard them and said, ‘Zara is right. We need to look after our bodies. Good food gives us energy and keeps us healthy.’ Here are some examples of healthy and unhealthy food. Unhealthy food is also called junk food. On this day, students can be asked to bring salads or fruit chaats to the class and help them to identify the different food items. • Encourage students to have their meals on time. They should not skip any meal. • Discuss the harmful effects of fast food and bottled drinks such as weight gain, laziness and feeling tired while playing outdoor games. • Have a discussion in the class on why food and water should not be wasted. Charts on ‘Save Water’ and ‘Save Food’ can be displayed in the classroom. • Encourage students to play outdoor games more often as it will improve their health. Mia studied in class 1.They played every day in a nearby park. They always went to the park with an older family member. One day their grandmother took them to the park. Renu and Mia started playing hide and seek with some other children in the park. Mia went outside the park to hide. Suddenly, an old lady holding a bag came to her. She asked Mia, ‘My dear little girl, where do you live? Who has come with you to the park?’ Mia replied, ‘I live in a house across the park. It will not take long.’ Meanwhile, Mia’s grandmother got worried when she did not see her for some time. She went outside the park to look for Mia and saw her talking to an old lady. She called out, ‘Mia, my child, come here.’ Mia came running to her grandmother. When the old lady saw the grandmother she began to walk away from there. Grandmother asked Mia, ‘Who was she? What was she telling you?’ Mia said that the old woman was offering her candies. She also wanted to take her to her house. Grandmother took Mia and Renu back to the house. She told Mia that she should not talk to strangers. She should never accept anything to eat or drink from them. If an unknown person wants her to go to their house she should say ‘no’. However, emphasise that not all strangers are bad people. • Educate students through examples about the ways in which unknown people may try to gather information from them about their home and family members. • Encourage students to always inform their elders about where they are going and who is accompanying them. • Some examples of how strangers can lure kids can be given in the class. Ways to deal with such situations can be explained through role-plays and actions. • Encourage students to tell their parents or a teacher if someone tries to touch them in a way that makes them feel frightened or uncomfortable.
