2 C o m p u t e r—A n E l e c troni c Devi c e Let us learn more about computers. COMPUTERS and HUMANS Computers are smart machines but they cannot work on their own. Let us see how computers are different from humans. We use machines to make our work simple and easy. A computer is an electronic machine that works very fast. It helps us to finish work easily and quickly. We use computers at many places. We use computers to: watch cartoons and movies. draw pictures. do calculations. search for information. type letters and stories. play games. Computers can work very fast. They can perform a large number of calculations in seconds. Humans cannot work as fast as computers. M01 eWorld-Grade 2 XXXX 01.indd 2 8/7/2019 2:25:58 PM © Pearson India Education Services Pvt. Ltd.

We cannot play games on a computer. __________ Process It WORKInG OF a COMPUTER A computer cannot work on its own. We need to give input and instructions to it to make it work. It works according to these instructions and gives output. Thus, a computer takes input, processes it and then gives the output. This is known as the Input-Process-Output cycle (I-P-O cycle). In our daily life, there are many examples where we do things using the IPO cycle. The following examples will help us to understand the IPO cycle. To prepare a cake: Input (Ingredients of a cake) Process (Cake being baked in the oven) Output (Delicious cake) M01 eWorld-Grade 2 XXXX 01.indd 4 8/7/2019 2:26:03 PM © Pearson India Education Services Pvt. C o m p u t e r—A n E l e c troni c Devi c e 5 Let us understand how the Input-Process-Output cycle works for computers. Input The computer gets the input in the form of data and instructions. The input devices such as a keyboard or mouse provide inputs to the computer. Process The entered data is processed or changed into meaningful information by CPU (Central Processing Unit). Output The result of processing is known as output. The output is displayed through the output devices such as monitor or printer. The following diagram summarises the working of a computer system in relation to IPO cycle. Input devices (Entering data) Central processing unit (Processing data) Output device (Displaying output) Input (Blocks) Process (Child making building using blocks) Output (Building made with blocks) To prepare building using blocks: M01 eWorld-Grade 2 XXXX 01.indd 5 8/7/2019 2:26:14 PM © Pearson India Education Services Pvt. Input and Output D e v i ces 27 We know that a computer works according to the IPO (Input-ProcessOutput) cycle. The parts of the computer that help us to give data and instructions are known as input devices. The parts of the computer that help us to see or print the result of processing are known as output devices. Let us learn about the input and output devices of a computer in detail. INPUT DEVICES The input devices allow us to communicate with the computer. The computer gets instructions through input devices such as keyboard, mouse, scanner and microphone. Keyboard A keyboard has many keys in it. We can enter the data into the computer by pressing various keys. Mouse A mouse usually has two buttons with a scroll wheel between them. The mouse is used to move the pointer on a computer screen. • We can select and open things using the left mouse button. • We can draw by keeping the left mouse button pressed and moving the mouse. This is known as dragging the mouse. • We can move a page up and down on the monitor by using the scroll wheel. Left button Right button Scroll wheel A mouse A keyboard M03 eWorld-Grade 2 XXXX 01.indd 27 8/7/2019 2:27:52 PM © Pearson India Education Services Pvt. Ltd.
28 INPUT AND OUTPUT DEVICES Scanner A scanner copies the text and pictures from a paper onto a computer. For example, we can scan our drawing from a sketch book or any printed information in a book onto the computer using a scanner. Microphone A microphone is used to input sound into a computer. It records our voice and other different sounds. For example, we can narrate a story and get it recorded in a computer using the microphone. A scanner A microphone Update In 1827, Sir Charles Wheatstone was the first person to come up with the word ‘microphone’. In 1876, Emile Berliner invented the first microphone. INPUT AND OUTPUT DEVICES 29 OUTPUT DEVICES The output devices are used to display or print the results obtaining after processing of data. The output is displayed through the devices such as monitor, printer and speakers. Monitor A monitor looks like a TV screen. We can see pictures, movies and videos on a monitor. When we press a key on the keyboard or use the mouse, these actions are also shown on the monitor. A monitor is also known as VDU. It stands for Visual Display Unit. A monitor Update Various types of monitors are available in the market these days, including LCD monitors, LED monitors and TFT monitors. These monitors occupy less space and generate less heat. Printer A printer copies the information that we see on a monitor onto a paper. The printed paper is known as the printout. Some printers can print only black and white printouts. Some can print colour printouts. There are various types of printers available in the market. For example, inkjet printer and laser printer. 30 INPUT AND OUTPUT DEVICES Speakers We can listen to music and sound effects using the speakers. For example, we can listen to our favourite song or poem using a speaker. We can also listen to music using headphones. The headphones allow only the wearer to hear the music. STORAGE DEVICES Why do we keep food in a refrigerator? We keep food in the refrigerator so that it can be used later. Sometimes, we may also need to store information for future use. For example, we may want to save our drawings in computer so that we can see them later. For this purpose, we use storage devices. Let us learn more about them. Update The output printed on a sheet of paper is called a hard copy, whereas the output displayed on the monitor is called a soft copy. Update We use units such as kilogram (kg) for weight and kilometre (km) for distance. Similarly, we use units such as megabyte and gigabyte for measuring the capacity of a storage device. Input and Output D e v i ces 31 Hard Disk Hard disk is the main storage device of a computer. It is present inside the CPU box. It can store a large amount of data. All the work done on a computer can be stored on a hard disk. Later, we will learn to save our work on the hard disk. CD/DVD CDs and DVDs are used to store a large amount of data. They work when we insert them into the CD/ DVD drive. We can easily carry the CD/DVD from one place to another. They can be used to store games and movies. A DVD can store more data than a CD. Pen Drive Pen drive is a storage device which is small in size. It can be easily carried in a pocket or a bag. It is also used to store and transfer data from one computer to another.
